- London Victoria Station in 1986
Before the busy onslaught of the evening peak I dropped into Victoria station, a location I had not been to since 1982. Class 411 (4 CEP), Class 415 (4 EPB), Class 416 (2 EPB), Class 421 (4 CIG), Class 422 (4 BIG), and class 423 (4 VEP) reigned supreme on most services, suburban and further out. The "Gatwick Express" was in the hands of Electro Diesel Locomotive Class 73 ("ED" for short) with a class 488 "GLV" the other end of the train. The service ran every 15 minutes at times so plenty of the ED class could be seen in action. The new EMU Class 455 had also ventured onto the South Cental area by the time of recording this visit.
I commuted in and out of VIC for many years (1987 onwards). Because I worked late into the evening, I paid a premium to be able to use the Gatwick Express, so could get home any time of night. If I asked nicely they'd stop at Horley to let me off! Interesting to see that the 73's hadn't all been liveried up at this stage. Some of the Mk2Fs still had InterCity logos on them too, before rebranding. All those slam door trains, operating at the time, amazing to see them on film. Thanks for the memories Mark.
The Gatwick Express was always the 'last chance saloon' to get home (sort of) if I was at a late gig in town in the 80s. It stopped at Redhill then I could politely ask one of my parents to come get me from Dorking!! Either that or beg the mail train to take me!! (to Redhill too)
Happy days @@OlafProt :)
Only 1.15 in and already I love it. A platform view looking south, a BIG in the first consist and then a CEP leaving on the SE side. Great stuff...
You are very welcome Geoff...and much appreciated for your interest......best wishes....Mark
You are very welcome Brian...I expect although at the time the commute was a tedious affair, looking back on it now, it will have a form of nostalgia....My best regards to you ....Mark
awwwww this time..and the old
beautiful victoria station. i could just make out the new station being completed buffer end. i wish they had left as it was. yes it was a bit grubby but that glorious roof and stanchions!! another amazing video…you are a legend!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Very much appreciated Karim.....best wishes...Mark
Without Vic there'd be no juicy views of Stew Lane back in the day, primarily the now vanished old loco yard.
Great stuff.
Just shows how busy Victoria was back then.
Was a gloomy place then, but brighter nowadays....many thanks....Mark
Thanks for sharing
You are very welcome...best wishes...Mark
Love the sound of the Thumper idling
Many thanks for your kind comment.....best regards...Mark
ooooh a taste of modernity 1:25 - possibly off to Dorking my home town! I always thought Victoria was the poor cousin to Waterloo. Victoria was such a disaster for so many years with that dividing wall. Thats livery at 15:15 always seemed to sum up Victoria lol, brown.
Waterloo for the Continent, Victoria for the Incontinent!
Not a 'central door locking' light in sight. Happy days...
Wonderful Eh......Many thanks for your kind comment.....best regards...Mark
I see the jaffa livery is here. What was that about? What did it represent?
I know it was named after the Jaffa Cake....but other than that....who knows.....many thanks for watching and for the comment Rebecca...best wishes....Mark
Oh wow, at 14.15, no wonder the powers that be hated any sort of on train service on SR. Four people to gat a trolley and them selves onto what I assume was a 30 minute Gatex? Pullman staffing levels to sell sarnies?
....best wishes....Mark
The southern region really had very ugly units. Almost everything in this video looks the same at both ends.
Yes they were ugly but since they have dissappeared they have gained an attraction.....Many thanks....Mark
Ugly but served a purpose for mass commuter transport on the largest 3rd rail network in the world.
@@rich_rich90 very true!
Ugly??? I thought they were great looking, the front of the CEP for instance always suggested the channel ports and the continent, the unrefurbished EPB’s with the deep seat cushions and light bulbs, the VEP units were also good looking units!!
