Paper Mache Dinosaur - Hello Therizinosaurus, Bye-Bye Kangaroo

  • This paper mache dinosaur is just at the beginning stage, and I hope you'll follow along and make one with me. The pattern for the Therizinosaurus can be found on my website at www.UltimatePa...
    To see how to make a dinosaur pattern of your own (and to see the kangaroo before I so rudely chopped him up and turned him into a Therizinosaurs pattern) see this video: • Paper Mache Animals - ...
    If you like the lion, giraffe, wolf and other critters on the wall behind me in the video, you can find the patterns here: www.UltimatePa...
    I haven't had time to do much with my dinosaur, but I'll be working on him as time permits. Now that the basic pattern is finished, I'll start working on those feet. I will take a look at ostrich feet for some ideas, and do more research to see how other artists have imagined Therizinosaurus. I didn't realize how popular this fellow was before starting the project. but that's great, because we can use the ideas from other artists as inspiration for our own work.
    If you make a dinosaur of your own, I hope you'll come to my blog and show it off. www.UltimatePa...
    I've always thought that so many cultures have myths about dragons because they found dinosaur bones. How else could they explain such huge creatures? And perhaps modern scientists weren't the first people to discover that dinos had feathers.
    The Therizinosaurus would work well as a dragon, if his head is given a few horns, like the ones on Dracorex hogwartsia. He has a serpent-like neck, and impossibly long claws that are half as long as his arms. All he's missing ar the wings.

    I am SO EXCITED about this dinosaur! I sculpt dinosaurs out of polymer clay sometimes and I have found that with bipedal animals, putting weights like rocks in the armature of the feet can help. Scientifically, in alive animals, we stand on two legs by having a center mass that creates center balance. In humans it's our pelvis with the most weight, which directs the weight to our legs and creates a sturdiness in stance. Animals like trex and ostrich have the same sort of weight distribution to aid in balance. With dinosaurs, scientist believe that their tails helped served the purpose of balance because their body shapes are typically so front heavy. So you have options with weighting the tail, feet, and/or pelvic area to mimic nature.

      I was wondering about those heavy tails! Thanks for mentioning that. I think I may have found a solution to the weight - I used plaster cloth when I made my big dodo bird, and it has never had a balance problem. Putting the weight in the feet really seems to be helping. I made some changes to the legs, too, after this video. And the tail... :)

    Thank you for selecting a Therizinosaurus, as your subject. This is my favorite of all dinosaurs and just doesn't get enough attention, IMO. Anytime I find the toy versions, I get them for my grandchildren. So, I know they'll be so excited when I show them your viddo. I stumbled across this video, looking for something different, but I'm committed.
    First thing in the morning, I'll gather my things. I'm so excited!!! Again, Thank You!!!

      Now I feel really guilty - I didn't finish my Therizinosaurus. My only excuse is that the project kept getting bigger in my mind. I imagined turning it into a whole museum-quality display, and it finally seemed like so much work I gave up and started doing other things. I would love to see your dino when it's done!

    Hi Johnny. You asked about how you can go about getting the dinosaur to stand up on it's own. my suggestion is to add a counter weight to it's chest and the tail. When doing so, you'll need to add supports to it's legs such as 1/2in pvc pipe. Make a U shape frame and insert it upside down to where the end of the PVC is touching the ground.

    @amberlindsey7112 5 років тому

    I love how you showed that you switched things up. It actually helps a lot to see for when you make mistakes and can fix them easily too. I wonder if when you add dimension to the tail if you can add some extra weight somehow to counter balance him.

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  5 років тому

      Hi Amber. Yes, I think some weight might help. I'm not sure when to add it, since the balance will keep shifting as I add the muscles and paper mache clay. We'll see. :)
      And I thought it would be fun to show that you can make changes as you go, even if you decide a dino would be more fun to make than a kangaroo. So many people worry that their sculpture won't turn out right. But it's no big deal - if you something doesn't look the way it should, just chop it off and do it over. :)

    Holy crap I'm shocked you do a dinosaur at random and it happens to be my absolute favorite- as a burgeoning paleontology nerd, I'd advise you to give him a bigger belly! It's accurate, think a ruminate's gut, and putting more weight down by his hips might help him stand up much more easily. Therizinosaurs also probably had nice wide flat feet, so I'm sure once you get some meat on it's bones you'll get it standing easily~

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  5 років тому +1

      I started working on his feet, and used plaster cloth to weight them down. If that isn't heavy enough, I may need to add more weight to the tail or chest. Wish me luck. :)

      They don't have a lot on Google about this dino, because such a small part of him was found. But I like the idea of adding weight to the feet - I did that with my dodo bird, by wrapping all the toes with plaster cloth. It worked really well.
