My big problem is, that when I learn these knots, it takes a long time for me to have to actually use one in anger. Would be nice to be somewhere where I could use them more often!
I just learned how to short splice from another tuber before I found your video and yours is so much more informative and detail. I only had polyester to use so I’ve not seen anyone use that and now I know why...it’s slippery and very dough on the fingers! Thanks so much and keep up the good work!
Glad that I could help, just remember the slippery the rope the more tuck to secure it. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
Another excellent instalment, and I thought the coloured strands to be perfect because you can use colour as well as pointing to show what you are referring to. One difference I was taught this summer by a crew member on tall ship that I had the pleasure of sailing on. When splicing, instead of keeping the lay tight by twisting as you pull it through, let it flatten out. This provides additional friction in the splice. I thought it was an interesting point of view.
Now that is very interesting. There is nothing better than hearing about how a knot or splice is actually used in action. It is only when you are at sea and depend on these knot/splices that you realise how important it is to get the maximum performance out of a knot. I take it that you are a practical knotter?
Johnny Debt I'm more of a dilettante, I'm afraid, but I really love the art. I sometimes wish that the lines on my sailboat were hawser laid lines so that I could do cool splicing, but then I come to my senses and realise the advantages of high tech braided lines. So I put turks heads and cock's combing where ever I can!
Johnny, Very clear explanation. One criticism: One usually deals with three strand that is all white. Bet it takes a few tries before that goes as well as with your three colors. But, it's still very educational. Many thanks. J
Thanks for your comment. I can assure you there will be other variants at a later date, then people will be able to choose what type of rope they want to watch.
Lovely rope John provides a great effect, but not what we would be using. I am wondering if all the colours and verbal references to them doesn't make it harder to follow than learning to look at the lay of the rope in the first place.
Yes, I think I tend to agree with you there. It was only an experiment so you can expect another one at a later date. This way people will be able to choose which they want to watch.
@@highanddryful DON'T you might end up proving me wrong 😉 😉 😉 Seriously though, I find this book and excellent resource, not sure how easy it is to get hold of though.
The problem I find with bracelets is that there are so many people doing them, it is difficult to come up with something new. Also, I am not really a fan of doing them.

The multicolor rope made this video super easy to follow. Thank you
One of the most practical applications of splicing used in the farm. Good vid/ explanation Johnny.
As a farmer, do you still use knots and splicing a lot? Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
In an old school farm, it's a sure thing Johnny. I like all your vids they are well explained and demonstrated, very helpful.

You tuck under and over! I thaught it was over and under?
If I recall correctly, I did consult Art of Knotting and Splicing, by Day; United States Naval Institute.
@@KnottingKnots fantastic thanks for confirmation, I'll get the book

Cool very interesting video
Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment. I tried to search your SCC, but could not find out what it was named after, do you know?
Why did you use red, yellow and green ropes? Are you Ethiopian? I thought you sounded British - red, white and blue.
Very cool. You have come a long way if I do say so myself and I have a vid Idea it won't be about how to join rope not just yeat ok
One day you will overtake me and have a following bigger than mine.
