    I figured I'd upload a cursory look at my Robbit plush. I will eventually do a more in depth look at Jumping Flash! and this plush robot rabbit.

      It's one of my prized items. I'd like to find a way to display it properly. If it requires dusting or cleaning, that paint will flake off even more. I'm thinking there must be a plastic dome that could fit, similar to the smaller domes of the capsule toys.

      @@mtshark7 Custom sounds expensive. Now that I think of it, there's a community that collects dolls like American Girls. I bet they make domes for dolls. I'll look into it.

    I absolutely loved Jumping Flash 2... I bought the game when it was released, on the strength of a UK magazine review (the way i chose all my new games back in the day)... Super fun game. Great use of "3D" graphics... Haha. I've never seen the actual plush toy (which is cool). Good luck keeping it in good condition.

      Jumping Flash! (JF!) gave such a visceral experience at the early onset of playable 3D graphics. Simulators existed before that but ran like molasses. The immediacy of rocketing into the air and falling hundreds of feet was intensified when your view tilted downward towards floating platforms and enemies below. It was a very freeing experience.
      The levels in JF! are expanded into 3D arenas vs the left-right model of 2D platformers. Remember Super Mario 64 doing that too? That was released over a year later than JF! It's remarkable how well the game played, given there weren't many famous 3D games released prior. JF! is truly a vanguard of its time. I don't know if there are any recent games which try to capture the spirit of rising hundreds of feet then trying to control your fall, but I think it's still a very exciting feeling.
      I haven't dabbled much with it, but the devs made a game prior to JF! which is sort of a prototype. JF! plays way smoother and there are notable mechanics which JF! adds. That earlier game is Geograph Seal for the X68000. I don't know if was the emulator I used, but it played really slow. I always meant to go back to it though. Either way, since you have an interest in JF!, maybe you could throw Geograph Seal onto one of your machines and put up a vid about it. Hopefully the emulation is better now.
      There's a lot of JF! merch which never left Japan. I think it's because other games like Crash Bandicoot quickly took the spotlight and Sony spent money promoting them. Maybe Sony thought the array of characters in Crash would sell better than a Robbit. :(

    That's an amazing plush! I didn't know a plush Robbit existed, and it's even crazier that you just nabbed it off eBay for such a reasonable price. I remember seeing a Captain Kabuki plush for cheap on eBay years ago that I stupidly didn't buy at the time not realizing how rare it was. Jumping Flash merch is so hard to find in general, seems like whenever you look it up these days the best you'll find is a MuuMuu with the palm tree head missing.

    • @WhatsOnMyShelf

      There are actually two Robbit plush of which I am aware. I've seen the Kabuki as well and like you I didn't grab it. I didn't want a 200 bazillion ton bananaman in a tutu on my shelf. There was what I now believe a rumor about a Robbit Totaku figure years ago, but it never came out. I'd prefer it over the plush, given how this thing falls apart even without player interference.

      I'm actually surprised the attention this video gets and that people other than me actually want Jumping Flash ephemera. If only Sony took notice and decided to reinvent the series and heck, why not do some heavy promoting with physical goodies? I will do an update to this vid eventually when I get out of the crushing weight of work and can do a more in-depth guide. I've been saying this since November 2018. Yeah, it's been rough :/ I'm glad there are other fans of Jumping Flash that continue to promote how exhilarating an experience piloting a robbit can be.

    • @WhatsOnMyShelf
      @WhatsOnMyShelf  Рік тому

      @Philyutuber2022 I'd agree that Sony should take this series out of retirement. It's sequels tried something different beyond the 3D platformer thing and kept the quirkiness. That quirkiness gives room to innovate.
      I wouldn't say those other series are horribad, though I haven't played any God of War beyond 3 and the physics in LBP threw me off. LBP is not my thing. Either way there's a lot of room in games. There's plenty of sports ball games I don't play. EA continues making them because people buy em. That cash allows them to experiment with new ideas.

I'd bet it would've been easier had I known Japanese. Funny thing is I've seen this plush a second time since making the video. It was in worse condition though.
      Like I said in the video, seeing this for sale at the time was hard to even recognize. My brain couldn't make sense out of it even though I was searching for years. I'm glad people are able to still dig up obscure stuff. Maybe 10-20 years ago, I would say if I went to Japan, I'd see this stuff regularly, but I have my doubts given the intense interest in retro-anything increasingly becoming more widespread over that same period.

      @@STEREOMAN91 That's awesome. I figured people were stumbling over this stuff in Japan longer than in the West, but it sounds like you have to search too. Maybe I'm misguided, but I would think they made a ton of copies of stuff which were in UFO machines. Do they trash it after the promotional period? Is it stacked in warehouses? It might be worthwhile tracking down a UFO operator and asking questions about distributors. I was able to track down rare videogame stuff that way during the past decade, including CIB Game Boy games over twenty years after their release. Maybe the distributor would want to sell items wholesale, but I'd go in on that deal. I actually sell quite a bit of stuff. Imagine new old stock Jumping Flash merch.

    Cool! I’ve kind of wanted one but I doubt I’ll get one in good condition because of the material. I do have the MuuMuu plushie though but the details on top are missing (at least it was new with tags rip). The MuuMuu plush I have is the angry eyes design.

    • @WhatsOnMyShelf
      @WhatsOnMyShelf  9 місяців тому

      Normally I see this fabric paint used for smaller features of plush such as eyes or other facial features, but I think the designer wanted to convey a metallic appearance for the plush by using this shiny fabric paint. It has really poor longevity since any way you handle the plush you come in contact with the paint. There's oil in the paint which breaks down with age. Again, with small features, maybe it wouldn't matter as much, but the entire plush!? Big mistake. Not well thought out. They should have just made cool plastic figures for all the characters.

    • @crazyfuntimetazz
      @crazyfuntimetazz 9 місяців тому

      @@WhatsOnMyShelf yea I’m not a fan the vinyl material they use for it damages the plush over time. Big examples being the E 102 Gamma plush, pikmin 2 olimar & Louie plush, and the soap shoe sonic plush. I still see companies use the material which I don’t understand why (I doubt it’s cheaper since printing details is more common and even then that design isn’t good unless handled properly like airbrush effect).

    • @WhatsOnMyShelf
      @WhatsOnMyShelf  9 місяців тому

      @@crazyfuntimetazzIt's cheaper than using shiny tape that is stuck to the fabric or having a stripe of shiny plastic material sewn into a base material. It makes the plush more visually attractive, at least initially.
      My preference is for sewn-in facial features rather than attaching a plastic bit that can scuff or this fabric paint which cracks as it dries. Even that airbrush technique can flake off when cleaning due to the oils drying or by the physical abrasion. Paint is definitely a cash-saving choice.

    • @crazyfuntimetazz
      @crazyfuntimetazz 9 місяців тому

      @@WhatsOnMyShelf agreed. Embroidery is always the best. I don’t mind printing as long as it’s for minor details and if a character doesn’t shiny (like let’s say metal Mario). They should honestly use a crush velvet material (like what Sanei/little buddy did with their metal Mario plush). Overlay and vinyl just doesn’t look good and I hate when I cracks.

    • @WhatsOnMyShelf
      @WhatsOnMyShelf  Рік тому

      Have you ever heard of digital decay? I think what you are experiencing is a symptom of it. I think the only reason I knew about this plush was because I came across it in a gaming mag in the 90s. I held onto that memory because I really liked Jumping Flash!. As time goes by, records that were digitized become dead links and those which remember that one image in a magazine they've been holding onto for twenty years eventually forget or they move on. I wouldn't say I've looked for this plush consistently throughout that time, but it did take years to pop up. Interestingly, I saw a second one for sale within a few months of making this vid.
      Whenever I get time to post again, a video about Jumping Flash merch is on my todo list.
