My dog Scout would hide in my closet behind my pants in a thunder storm or if there were fireworks. He died two years ago and occasionally I still find some of his fur on my pants. Like you I stop, remember and smile. Thanks for all you do Dixie.
I love to listen to you speak, the beautiful Southern lilt in your voice, the way you speak like a little girl when you're talking to insects or animals, the revery here of when you were a little girl and how it's affected you as a woman, the love I hear for your dog Hank when you find one of his hairs, "But now, uh, I hope it never stops. And I can tell it's his cuz there's a whole sunset in the end of it." Whether you're talking about equipment, or the trail, or dispensing some of your homespun philosophy, it's always interesting. You so seldom have a harsh word to say, and have so many kind and uplifting things to say. It's what makes your channel so great.
Okay. I don’t know if I’ll get any responses but I’m a 60 year old man who started hiking the a/t again last year after way to many years of not hiking. I had forgotten how much I loved it and also how much I had to learn and relearn. I think I have become an ultra light packer. Not for the reason of most but simply at 60 It just makes it so much easier. The last piece of equipment that I really haven’t bought is a “good “ tent. I try to read and listen to everything. Your channel absolutely seems to be the most informative unbiased. But for me is Z PAC or something similar going to be the thing. Thank you for any one’s advice!
I absolutely loved the start without the music to really convey the shift in energy from the previous episodes now that you’re solo. Really conveyed how silent the trail is. Keep up the fantastic videos!
After my German Shepard died, I remember her last paw prints in the ice and snow in the back yard and, as the days started to warm up, watching those prints melt away. It's hard to lose furry family and, in some ways, you never really get over it.
Yes mam 👍 The paracord tie outs are what I'm talking about. They come in handy to when sand camping and stakes are worthless. I wrap them around branches and bury like a snow anchor. Loved the trash mileage marker😅
I run the tiger wall 2, my only complaint is moisture will come up through the ground with the BA fitted ground sheet, there is always a wet ground on the LSHT. I will probably get the zpacks triplex.
Hiking in the dark (again). At times following the trail in bright sunlight is challenging enough that I have to hunt for it and rarely retrace steps. This is why I avoid night hikes, well that and the desire to set up camp before dark. The stake extension rope is great idea I’m going to add a couple of those to my Zpacks Altaplex. Looks like you could split the line into a V (Y) for even more flexibility. 👍. Thx Dixie
OMG that sky! 😃 Dixie, I sure know what you mean about the dog fur. My buddy died 2 and a half years ago, but I still have his blanket and a couple of others that have just held onto the fur like I wish I could have held onto him forever. 😢
I understand about finding the fur later. I had to put my kitty baby down two weeks before Christmas and I am still mourning her passing. I still have her blanket and saved a clip of her fur. I still can't get over how fast she went downhill and I had to make the hard decision to let her go. I still find fur in different places and I hold it for a few minutes and still have a tear in my eye.
Enjoy watching your hiking adventure and trying out new hiking Equipment and listening bro your a pinions. I started backpacking about 5 years ago and fell in love with it.
That was really neat finding you dog’s hair. I had a similar experience when I pulled out my backpack from when I was a young one to take my oldest son on his first overnight trip, and found a blond hair from my Sydney - my yellow lab when growing up. A special moment.
Dixie, thank you for this not for the tent but for the comment about the dogs hairs 🥰 hair looking like a sunset and everyone of them that is a poem in itself :-) thank you very much I haven't made it through the end of the video but would like to see how to fold the tent or repack the tent, I thought I saw you just crumble it up and shove it back in the bag just trying to understand the best way to repack it so far I love mine and yes I've already figured out the cord piece also on another hike very good solution you came up with like minds think a like thank you :-)
You had mentioned that the weight of your pack was bothering a shoulder. You might try relieving that some with a tump line? A simple one is a short length of line tied to opposing diagonal corners of a loosely folded bandanna; sheet bend knots work well here. Length of the line has to be adjusted for comfort. It can attach to your pack frame with a simple loop to share a portion if the load. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
Goodness , Gracious, Dixie I've been to Cave Springs GA. I'm a northern Minnesota fellow that spent time in the Marines. Back in 1970 a fellow Marine, James McEver, invited me to his home in Cave Springs. We Spent the weekend there and his family were the nicest, friendliest folks this Marine ever met. I can't believe our paths crossed 50 years apart in that community. Happy Trails to You.
I like the solo stuff the best. More vintage Dixie. All the new production stuff is nice, with the music and the sharp edits, but, in my opinion, that OG AT hike was the best. Just a woman and her phone trying to do something she had never done. I will also say that money changes things a lot. I can tell you that I did a lot of camping and hiking when I was young and very poor. I had minimal gear that was whatever I could afford and counting change to see if I had money to get home. I think I enjoyed those trips much more than I did later when I had some money, had to choose between gear in my closet, and could opt out of the hard stuff.
@@hindsfeetonhighplaces For me, true snow conditions, is just really hard work all day to stop, set up a cold tent in the snow, be cold all night and then do again. But hot tent camping or if there’s not snow everywhere, that’s pretty glorious. ❄️ Good luck. Have fun.
I dunno, Shug winter camps BWCAkind of regularly. Seems easy enough to do if you think and plan for it, but I suppose that applies to just about any camping.
Thank you Dixie for inspiring me to get out into nature. I've ordered all ultralight gear I will need and I am just waiting for the last few items to arrive. But I am trying to get out and hike every day in the meantime. In the times in which we live, your channel is a very welcome relief.
I spent years chasing those hairs of the dog child of past. They do fade a bit and get mixed with the current. They are never forgotten and are always loved. We keep moving forward and do the best we can. Great video!
Dixie, I have said this before, but you've got such style in telling your story in your videos. That intro was so cool -- simple, immediate and classy.
Beautiful start with the plants and deer. Enjoy this while you’re young. It makes great memories. If you like the pines of East Texas, check out the Lonestar Hiking Trail. Meanders through what was once the Big Thicket. Thanks for brightening our day.
Dixie you are amazing. You have inspired me to do more hiking. My son and I are doing a little stretch of the PCT in two weeks. Its just 28 miles from Chinook pass to White pass but I am really excited. Thanks for all the info. I kind of binge watch your channel.

I plan to hike the Pinhoti in April. Thanks for educating us mere neophytes. Well I’ve been backpacking since 1972 but we all learn more and more and can never know it all. Thank you Dixie.
What a great way to enjoy October, single head beam looking over the edge of a cliff with the option of a crackity old ladder down to the darkness! Squeaky old house doors and hanging family portraits of the 1880’s and no one else around! Rabid dogs bolting from no where to great you or scare you! Happy Halloween!
I am about to start back up hiking again. We hunt from October to mid January so don't get to do much around that time. I live in Alabama and need to start finding great place to go that are close. I hike alone usually cause my husband hates it haha Our Germen Shepard has been gone for 8 years and I still find her hair on things it's a great reminder they are always with you.
Nice video but would like to give some ladder safety tip. Hold on to the vertical parts of the ladder with your hands and when you step on the tread/runner/step part of the ladder, step close to the vertical or upright for more support and balance. If the tread/runner/step comes out when you step you could fall because you are holding to a tread/runner/step as well and it can come out too. Most wood ladders are put together with nails in stead of construction screws. Nails can slip out and construction screws hold strong. By holding to the vertical with your hands prevents you from falling unless your hands slip off. Does seem awkward if you are not use to this method of climbing ladders but it is safer especially if you are going down or up rope ladders. Happy hiking.
Really enjoying & appreciate these videos. You happen to be testing a few shelters I’ve been contemplating. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences & thoughts.
Right in the feels with the dogs hairs.. Great video as always, keep up the great work its always a pleasure to see one of your videos pop up in the feed. Take care and be well.

You taught me something, made me smile, cry about dog hair and simply enjoy our state. One of my favorite videos by far. Well done, Dixie!
I needed something to distract me from the news media today. Thank you for your wonderful timing. I'm looking forward to that Big Agnes tent review.

2:15 with an unknown ladder, only one foot on each rung, and step at the edges next to the rail, it'll lower the stress and be less likely to break.
