Emperor Aurangzebs tomb is in Khuldabad. A 14th century necropolis of sufi saints. It lies in the dargah of Zainuddin Shirazi, Aurangzebs spiritual teacher. The remains of the emperor lie in an open air grave. Roofed by "the vault of the sky". It rests against the wall of his spiritual teachers tomb. A basil plant grows in the bare earth of the tomb. Aurangzebs epithet lies in one corner. The perforated jalli was placed in 1921 by Lord Curzon. Aurangzeb funded his own tomb by knitting caps in the last years of his life.
Zainuddin was given the robes of the Caliphate at Daulatabad in 1336. The robe and the 'taj' are preseved in a box. Zainuddin died in 1370 CE. A mausoleum was erected over his tomb.
On the other side of the courtyard in an open grave lies the tomb of Azam Shah, Aurangzebs second son and 'matchless friend'. It has a small marble headstone ornamented with carved floral designs. Next to him is his favorite wife Jahanzeb Banu Begum. A third grave is that of the daughter of a sufi saint.
