About head injuries - it's already being looked into in soccer. Heading practice is banned below a certain age and there have been demonstration games with no heading allowed.
This lad 'forgot' to mention the huge amount of 'new Americans' who enter the US every day, most of them come from countries with a football (soccer) culture, adding to the rapidly growth of popularity of soccer in the US.
Football (soccer) is not slow. Its quick. It's been shown that Footballers cover something like 8 miles in 90 minutes. The great thing about Football is the bottom three teams get relegated and the top three in the lower league get promoted. It's not unusual for the relegation to go to the last game.
The problem with soccer(football) in the USA is that they can't control it as much. The other US sports are strongly linked to American companies so the rules and arrangements can be changed whenever they want, for whatever reason they want. Back during the '94 USA World Cup, there were various business people come forward wanting to create their own American version of Soccer that would cater better to what they thought US fans wanted and, incidentally, be completely controlled by their company. This idea of 'we're going to do our own version of soccer' was quite bewildering.
The numbers for Baseball was truly jaw dropping - no wonder it's so hard to build an international audience. People just do not have the time for it any more. It makes you think that's why there's so much US investment into football clubs: shorter games, more revenue streams, it's practically pick up and play and a very simple sport at the heart.
Football ⚽️ as it is called in most parts of the world 🇬🇧🇮🇪🇧🇪🇧🇻🇨🇵🇩🇰🇪🇸🇮🇹🇱🇻🇳🇱🇩🇪 with slight variations for the spelling in language, not American handegg 🏈
I'm an English football fan, i'v been obsessed with the NASL since I first discovered it as a child in the early 80s, it's my favourite defunct football league, i'v had an interest in the development of football in the US ever since, I honestly thought at the time of launch that the MLS would of surpassed the NFL by now and football would be The Sport, but America remains the most resistant country in terms of football acceptance, although it is making progress now, maybe another World Cup would help, which you co-host with Canada and Mexico in 2026
Never going to happen. They said that "soccer" was going to boom in the 70s when Pele & George Best went to play in the US. They said that "soccer" was going to boom in the 90s After USA 94. They said that "soccer" was going to boom in the 2000's after the launch of the MLS. The fact is that Soccer has to cement it's place in an oversaturated market that Has Baseball, NFL, NBA & the NHL in it. The same goes the other way around. NFL is trying to brake into a market that has the Premier League, Cricket, Rugby Union & Rugby League.
Lol the MLS was launched in the 90's but there has definitely been a "boom" as you call it. It's literally growing in every single measurement. Fans/viewers/advertising/money in the game/etc. It's already wayy more popular than baseball and hockey with younger people and many stadiums across the country sell thousands of tickets to their games, when big teams from Europe come here to play meaningless friendlies they Sell out! Whats your problem? You cant see any of that/don't understand it? You just hate the sport?
Trust me, I’m 40 and I’ve seen the difference from when I was 10 to now that my kid is 10, the boom is incredible. Social Media, going to the World Cup, and bringing the World Cup here is key.
I wondered why the North Americans calll the sport "Soccer", turns out it was a nickname in UK Universities shortened from the word Association (Football) in the 19th C just as the nickname 'Rugger' was coined for Rugby Football!
It was also a class thing, the working class, who used to be the ones going to watch, called it football. While the upper class ie. the owners called it soccer. Which one of the reasons why you never get an agreement on what to call it, as the working class hated the name soccer.
The one thing you could do to make your football (soccer) league better is to form a second division and allow promotion and relegation to/from it. Most European (and others) have up to four descending professional leagues as well as a host of amateur and semi-professional leagues below them, all allowing promotion to a higher league until you reach the pinnacle. This would make every game count as getting relegated means lower tv/media fees. No deliberately losing to get yourself a better draft etc when there's an extreme penalty for finishing last.
Born and bred in the UK. What's I find amusing about this video talking about baseball will fall behind football or soccer as you call it. Baseball is starting to be played in the UK with American teams coming over and playing games in the capital London. There is definitely a massive following for the NFL. Personally I would like to see more NHL live or reruns on channels in UK. And the UK already have NHL leagues set up around the country. Just very fascinating
Simple reasons: 1. Match is 90 mins long (obvs plus half time and any injury time) 2. No stupid time outs for fricken adverts!!!!! 3. Its is generally all go, no pauses to reset the field, no bringing on another entire team because you are now defending. PS I also love American Egg chasing (PACKERS! only team owned by the Fans)
I live in Australia and i have noticed Football ( soccer ) is growing over here too, even for the females. Over the years Cricket has changed too, for a different audience who want to watch a game that is quicker ( one day only ) compared to three days. Times are changing every where.
You can get a concussion playing football (soccer) by heading the ball to score a goal or to head the clear as a defender so your assumption is in correct.
I dont understand the point about the number of games. During the season there are 1000s of national league matches across 6 divisions. 380 matches in the Premier League alone.

there have been head injuries linked to football (soccer) too. Because we use out heads to head the ball and it can cause repetative damage. Young players are no longer allowed to train in headers but it is part of the game and will be something that may need to have rule changes in the future.
There is a reason the whole world loves football ( soccer to save any confusion ) well there are probably a few, the nonstop action, the importance of a goal, the way our leagues are set up meaning that a lot is riding on most games and the fact that just about everybody has tried to control a ball with their feet and knows just how much skill is required.
My 21 year old son and his many friends are all big sports fans. All of them love NBA and NFL. Most of them follow EPL and ECL soccer. Most of them now follow a little MLS because of Messi. A couple follow NHL. None of them watch baseball.
What Americans need to realise... Is that as viewers watching football (soccer)... That don't have advertisement breaks for 45 minutes are a good thing for them... And once the half time whistle goes... The next 15 minutes can be full of on screen advertisements... Until the second half kicks off... But most viewers will then use that 15 minute break... To use the bathroom... Make food snacks... Make drinks and other refreshments... Make a phone call... Check their emails... Or anything else that they need to do... And because you have to pay to watch the likes of the Premier League... Sky Sports or any of the other pay per view or subscription platforms... Will more than make their money back... Even without the regular advertisements interrupting the game... As advertising will usually do with all of the other popular televised US sports... It'll be a breath of fresh air for most American viewers. 👍

Pele, often said to be the greatest player ever, played for the New York Cosmos in the 70s. The sport didnt take off and the team no longer exists. Personally, while MLS stays and a business venture where teams buy a spot in the league and theres no incentive to get better (no threat of relegation for bad teams, no promise of promotion from a lower league), i dont think those funding the teams will feel the need to grow. I hope im proved wrong but, as with Pele, there was a lot of fuss about the game that died down
The goalkeeper was Renée higuita during a friendly match between England and Colombia,he heard the ref's whistle for a foul and went for it. Incredibly quick thinking, a Wembley legend
Been thinking about this topic, and saying to others[in person and online], since the mid-2000's, that soccer(football), will grow in popularity in the United States. That it will surpass hockey and baseball, in popularity, in the next decade. Then, in the 2010's, I was thinking that soccer will level out with the NBA by 2030's. But now, I'm iffy about surpassing the behemoth of the NFL. But I know MLS will be in tight second or third with the NBA in the near future. As well, MLS being a league to able to challenge their European counterparts.
People have been saying Soccer is going to take of really big, in USA since the days of the NASL. And it never really has done the NASL eventually became defunct. Even if it does increase in popularity, it won't ever be more popular. Than the more favoured sports in USA, like American Football, Baseball and Basketball. Even Ice Hockey is more popular, for Soccer to rise above four more popular sports in USA. Really is very unlikely to ever happen, no matter how big it remains worldwide. Besides USA pumps vast sums of money into sports, their country actually prefers to watch. And those top four popular American sports still have more than enough money coming into them. To keep the vast majority of American young talent, still choosing one of the four over Soccer.
Plus football doesn't break off for mindnumbing adverts until half-time. I assume that's still the case in America.... perhaps against my better judgement
I always recalled the lack of advertising possibilities being a major setback for the big leagues in the US. If you explain it like that in a board room, it indeed doesn't bode well revenue wise. But it is also typical American to ignore the rest of the world when making these descissions. When the sport moved from pure association football into sponsored club football, advertisements became a major part of the sport a 100 years ago. That predates television by over half a century!
Will “soccer” keep gaining in popularity? Yes. (And that’s great!) Will the US ever be a dominant country? No. The US is too far behind and the country’s structures (tying sports to schools, pay for play, no village clubs, no pyramid, conpetition from other sports) makes it impossible to compete. There’s also a huge lack of know-how. China and Saudi are showing that money isn’t enough. I don’t think Americans grasp how extremely developed club football is in Europe. Clubs from European second tiers have scouting networks all across Africa and South America. The competition is global and extreme. Kids are recruited to academies when they are like 7, and are trained by professionals. The amount of football knowledge and experience in England or Spain ensures that every kid gets a better football education. There are currently 239 players rated at a higher market value than the highest valued American (Pulisic). Comparatively tiny nations like Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark, Croatia etc. are on a whole different level. And clubs like Galatasaray, Bologna, Feyenoord, Marseille etc would absolutely crush the MLS. The idea that “if we only did it, we would crush!” is so tiresomely American. Reeking of hubris and cultural myopia.
If anyone thinks Football is slow then watch the last 10 minutes of Man United v Liverpool and the 30 minutes of extra time that has just been played 2 days ago. Absolutely fantastic nonstop action.
I agree, over a period time, the best players/managers in the world will be attracted to soccer in the US, mostly due to the the financial power of the large population, this will only snowball its popularity, eventually making it the most popular sport in the US. What also helps, it's easy for school sports teachers to get the kids running around for fitness exercise, not much equipment is needed to get a game going as well, just an open space with goal posts. Advertising is not a problem, in Germany, they split the screen and advertise periodically while play is active! You also have 15 minutes of half time after 45 minutes of play. You will also have a big south american TV audience watching their best players perform in what will be the most competitive league in the world, just give it time, it will happen.
They already tried that to mess with the rules. I mean who didn’t love the penalty shootouts from outside the box kinda like the NHL. That was awesome…
I understand why the US looks on football/soccer as slow. The last time football tried to make it's big mark in the US was in the 80's. Well in the 80's the main tactic was to not let the other team play/have the ball, you just have to look at how Liverpool and Man U played their European matches, the defence would just knock the ball around for ages looking for that gap. Whereas in todays game you can't play like that, well you can, but there are teams now that want you to do that, because they know how to combat it. So yes the game tactics have changed since the last time football tried to break the US, so where it was about keeping the ball as much as possibile, it's now hit them hard and fast, and see if they can keep up.
Football (soccer) is slow?? I can't even go grab a drink without sprinting because sometimes missing 10 second and a counterattack goal happened. That's the worst feeling when that happened. The game is fast paced, but the amount of score is very low compared to other sports.
I hope if it does take off it has proper leagues that have promotion and relegation. Otherwise it would just become a corporate joke, like American sports now. And the joke is on the fans and the people doing laughing are the corporate owners as they've got it sown up so tight.
Sceptical old me doubts if football will ever become as widely popular in the US as this narrator believes - because it won't get televised as easily. Most popular American sports lend themselves to being televised with lots & lots of ad breaks inbetween spells of play; but forty-five minutes of football simply doesn't allow any opportunities for adverts between sessions of play. It may grow largely at the grass-roots level in the US (well and good) but I doubt it will go much further than that.
It's already there popularity wise. But the problem is the MLS isn't the thing everyone cares about or watches. Most fans in America mainly watch the Mexican league or the English prem/LA Liga
The big leagues have caused the decline themselves. It's so expensive to have subscriptions to watch a sport regularly and then often an extra to see the big climax at the end of the season that people don't bother. Paywalls to viewing added to ridiculous gate prices for live games have eroded fan bases to just die hard enthusiasts. Greed is killing sport.
I honestly don’t mind the word “soccer” when used by Americans - if I hear an American say “football” I assume they mean the American variety. Plus Aussies and some other English speakers call it soccer too.
If someone wants to be absolutely pedantic, "football" is a generic name for a whole family of related games. Soccer is not THE football but simply one version. It is, to be more specific, Association Football or Association Rules Football. The American sport is therefore America Football. Australia has Australian Rules Football. Then there is rugby which is the game that originated at Rugby school in England and is more properly known as Rugby Football. They are ALL football. Association Football or soccer claims the right to own the name simply because, globally, it is by far the most popular and widespread discipline.
When you kept saying "that's in Canada" at the start, the guy had said it was hosted in America. That incorporates Canada and Mexico, he was referring to the continent not the United States👀
American culture is based on instant reward and greed; that is why high scoring games suit the psyche. Football is often low scoring, but if you are brought up playing and watching it, you understand the European culture of work to earn reward. The game is holistic and best watched live, so you can see what is happening across the whole field.
Why is 'American Football' called football when the ball is almost never (with the exception of the kicker), played solely with the feet? It is much closer to 'Rugby Football' which popular myth describes as beginning when a chap called William Web Ellis, during an Association Football match at Eton, picked up the ball and ran with it. There are several earlier references along similar lines and most involve a ball that can be played either with the feet and/or hands. Perhaps it could be American Rugby? Association Football, on the other hand, which the US calls Soccer and was indeed frequently called that in the UK (shortened version of Association) until TV invited global audiences into everyone's living room, is almost exclusively played with the feet. Across the globe, outside the USA, it is called 'Football' for this very reason. Football equals feet and ball as far as I'm concerned. Even UK Rugby/League and Aussie Rules have quite a lot of foot and ball contact. USA, no I don't think so.
In Europe many kids kick a ball around at primary school, in the street, park, or wherever, from a very young age, or maybe with their parents, in their back yard. They don't wait to go to some academy.
@@kimbirch1202 What are you talking about? Football is already flourishing in the US. We have the NFL. The main reason soccer won’t is because of you pretentious Euros. To an America, Japanese, Korean, Filippino, and Australian, it’s called soccer. You gonna mock them for it too? That attitude is why soccer has a low reputation over here. Look. American football is a minor sport on the world stage. As is basketbal and baseball. After football(soccer), cricket is the biggest sport in the world.
Football (soccer) also has problems with concussions, though not as much as American football or rugby. Sadly, a lot of football heroes of the past are spending their last few years with alzheimers as a result of a carer filled with heading the ball. BTW, more (very long term) problems for traditional American sports - cricket and rugby are slowly starting to get a foothold in the US :)
5:40 it's not true about basketball though I personally find Euroleague more entertaining then NBA. Of all American sports basketball is only one that's actually popular almost everywhere in the world.
This was a great video but I think he missed 2 points. Ryan Reynolds welcome to Wrexham has generated massive interest in the game across the US and also "soccer" has relegation and promotion which creates steaks that don't exist in American sports
I followed and loved American football 🏈 for 5/6 years, but sadly I have totally fallen out of love with it totally. I don’t think I’ll be watching it again, I’m sorry. Do not like constant commercial breaks, also no American sports has an open system in their sports like football ⚽️ has with promotion and relegation in their setup. By the way it’s not soccer, it’s football ⚽️.
Not even good at that anymore. The best baseball players right now are a Venezuelan (Acuna Jr.), A Dominican (Soto) and Japanese ( Ohtani) Heck even looking at the NBA the stat leaders are a Serbian, Slovenian and Cameroonian 😮
It's only a matter of time before the US is among the best football/soccer countries in the world. They're already pretty decent, but not yet top-tier quality and quantity.
Football is not slow, what a lot of Americans don’t appreciate is that football pitches are huge and they don’t get annoying advert breaks and stop playing every 6 minutes. They play non stop for 45 minutes, have a 15 minute break then play another 45. Plus some cup games do further 30 minutes overtime! Football players can run 7-10 miles per game!
Right, just clear one thing up. Soccer is the Enlish name for the game. There are two sports with word football in its name in England, rugby football and what used be called association football Until about 50 years ago association football was usually called soccer on England. Wasn't until English payed regularly in European competition that the use of football became more commonly used in England
I don't think soccer will ever be as successful in America until they defranchise and allow teams to be promoted and demoted. This also allows all city's to make teams and have a reason to play and create small teams that will eventually rise to the top leagues, it gives you a sense of pride and true care for the sport and your city. Not to mention makes every game in a season matter even if you're so far behind and out of the title race. You honestly care about every match because every match matters so you don't get relegated, this means at home viewers and in person numbers will always be high making money for all companies involved whether it be the broadcasting companies or the teams their selves
As if NFL is not slow... 1 play 6 secs stop ... penaly. stop .. advertising stop ... 1 play .... injury stop ... advertising stop .. 1 play .. penaly stop .. 4 hours later .... 1 play stop ...
Yeah but what about all that instant gratification.. whoopin an a hollerin as the 'ball' moves forward by inches before eveyone stops, gets in a huddle and decides what to do next. Anyway, I thought it was called Gridiron

Back during the '94 USA World Cup, there were various business people come forward wanting to create their own American version of Soccer that would cater better to what they thought US fans wanted and, incidentally, be completely controlled by their company. This idea of 'we're going to do our own version of soccer' was quite bewildering.
They wanted bigger goals.
American TV dont like it,they cant cram in ads mid game like American football
The NASL already had rule changes made for the US spectator. They like the NASL never lasted, but they were actually implemented.
Soccer was used in the UK for a long time until a few decades ago.
It was also a class thing, the working class, who used to be the ones going to watch, called it football. While the upper class ie. the owners called it soccer. Which one of the reasons why you never get an agreement on what to call it, as the working class hated the name soccer.
just to clarify the USA is joint hosting the world cup with Canada and Mexico in 2026
The one thing you could do to make your football (soccer) league better is to form a second division and allow promotion and relegation to/from it.
Looks like Rugby won't be taken up by the Americans if they're scared of American Football. 😅😅😅
Much as 20/20 is fun to watch I do think the 50 over matches are the shortest full matches, there's just enough overs for a twist and a turn or two.
Love your videos. My JJLA Reacts mug arrived today. I'm super excited 😄
Football is and makes culture... and that takes time...
You can get a concussion playing football (soccer) by heading the ball to score a goal or to head the clear as a defender so your assumption is in correct.
I dont understand the point about the number of games. During the season there are 1000s of national league matches across 6 divisions. 380 matches in the Premier League alone.
JJLA there was a player called anton walkes who used to play for atlanta and also my team portsmouth FC/Pompey sadly he died last year in a boat crash but he was a great player for portsmouth he was in the team when portsmouth won the efl trophy at wembley who portsmouth currently hold the record for highest capacity there infact you shoudl watch some stuff about Portsmouth fc a massive football club very popular to football legends tiery henry ronaldinhio and jose mourinho they said we had the best fan atmosphere in the world
there have been head injuries linked to football (soccer) too. Because we use out heads to head the ball and it can cause repetative damage. Young players are no longer allowed to train in headers but it is part of the game and will be something that may need to have rule changes in the future.
Man, I could listen to your voice forever. Pure ASMR lol
I need to see a minute of commercials of commercials every 5 minutes. It makes the game so exciting!
UCL I supposed
Atlanta United had a player so good he was sold to the Premier League in the U.K
MIGGY MIGGY ALMIRON!
Yeah, on ITV half time is 2 ad breaks with 5mins in between to talk about the first half.
It’s actually the reason I started watching soccer more. less ads.
Im a Brit and I know the MLB season is 162 games in 180+ games which is 6months NOT 4! Simple MATHS! Unless American months are now different from UK months! :P
Of course I meant 180+ days!
😂LOL! That recurring thumbs down from Apple and your increasingly exasperated then almost desperate written comments with the accompanying cameos of Tim Cook! Bloody hilarious!!🤣
Every Saturday there's 40 games in England top 4 divisions alone!!
"This is Atlanta, we're gonna stomp you out".
He never jeopardy. In football teams will be relegated if they lose too many games.
They're also many African and Latino immigrants so that helps too
Been thinking about this topic, and saying to others[in person and online], since the mid-2000's, that soccer(football), will grow in popularity in the United States.
That Apple icons plague was so annoying. But hey, at least that is accurate re Apples ATTITUDE!!
I enjoyed the bubbles
You’re welcome to join the rest of the world, but a word of advice…..DONT fuck with the rules.
Ads at half time, leave it that.
They already tried that to mess with the rules. I mean who didn’t love the penalty shootouts from outside the box kinda like the NHL. That was awesome…
How anyone can watch basketball is beyond me. The players are so good, that it's actually a novelty if they miss, hence ludicrous scores.
well this is cap. best players shot 50% so they miss a lot actually
The MLS needs to bring in relegation from the league rather than the franchise model it currently has. It will make the league much more exciting.
Apple clearly hates soccer. All those thumbs down.
I hope if it does take off it has proper leagues that have promotion and relegation. Otherwise it would just become a corporate joke, like American sports now. And the joke is on the fans and the people doing laughing are the corporate owners as they've got it sown up so tight.
its actually said its going to be in the Americas with most games being in the US
Sceptical old me doubts if football will ever become as widely popular in the US as this narrator believes - because it won't get televised as easily.
Things can change.
Because that is part of the culture over there.
@gambitacio Yes, football will never flourish in the USA unless it becomes part of its culture too.
Rich kids and pretentious dickheads saying “it’s football not soccer” whenever someone tries to get remotely interested in the sport.
And here that's done with basketball.
Is just natural , good one kids , we use to play at 12 am til 1,30 am on fridays that was the time that we could hire the football ground in the suburb where I lived in Chile is was always fully booked , and as the kids from Europe we did the same all over South America . play in the streets, which made some neighbours not very happy 😁😁😁
Look. American football is a minor sport on the world stage. As is basketbal and baseball. After football(soccer), cricket is the biggest sport in the world.
Basketball would be 3rd though, right?
Football (soccer) also has problems with concussions, though not as much as American football or rugby. Sadly, a lot of football heroes of the past are spending their last few years with alzheimers as a result of a carer filled with heading the ball. BTW, more (very long term) problems for traditional American sports - cricket and rugby are slowly starting to get a foothold in the US :)
To many interuptions in US sports timouts for Adds all the stops in play is bad
5:40 it's not true about basketball though I personally find Euroleague more entertaining then NBA. Of all American sports basketball is only one that's actually popular almost everywhere in the world.
The US hosted the world cup in 1994.
Sport of the Future since 1975.
In what world is basketball entertaining?
One game a week ?? How many games a week you think there are in real football
SOCCER DOES NOT EXIST. It's called football.
Do a reaction to US football fans Vs European football fans
There's a reason why it's the biggest sport in the world...US are no diferent, they'r learning...
Not really MLS sucks! American players still underperform in Europe. People would rather watch EPL La Liga or Serie A.
No Rugby will take over in popularity.
They won't have any chance with snooker or darts then! 😂
There's always been plenty of Americans playing abroad.
I find basketball really boring to watch.
One team goes and scores, and then the other team scores.
Very predictable .
No real tactics or strategy.
I do like baseball but there's way too many games
IShowSpeed...or, as I like to call him, IFlopWang...after an hilarious, but unfortunate wardrobe malfunction 🤣🤣🤣
Apple suck though. I’m not convinced soccer will overtake US sports but it will continue to grow…
Football is slow, eh?
the Americans are good at sports hardly anyone else plays
Not even good at that anymore. The best baseball players right now are a Venezuelan (Acuna Jr.), A Dominican (Soto) and Japanese ( Ohtani)
Heck even looking at the NBA the stat leaders are a Serbian, Slovenian and Cameroonian 😮
theres plenty of basketball leagues outside the US, very popular
The Greek and Turkish leagues are absolute chaos( in a good way )
Can you many americans supporting our teams...😅😅😅😅
It's only a matter of time before the US is among the best football/soccer countries in the world. They're already pretty decent, but not yet top-tier quality and quantity.
Football is not slow, what a lot of Americans don’t appreciate is that football pitches are huge and they don’t get annoying advert breaks and stop playing every 6 minutes. They play non stop for 45 minutes, have a 15 minute break then play another 45. Plus some cup games do further 30 minutes overtime! Football players can run 7-10 miles per game!
He also made a name for himself as IShowMeat after his wiener sliped out on stream.
Right, just clear one thing up. Soccer is the Enlish name for the game.
There are two sports with word football in its name in England, rugby football and what used be called association football
Until about 50 years ago association football was usually called soccer on England.
I really think you should read the rules for Football leagues. That would maybe show you how it works. clearly you have no idea.
@@seanoreilly7293There is no relegation in sport in America.
As if NFL is not slow... 1 play 6 secs stop ... penaly. stop .. advertising stop ... 1 play .... injury stop ... advertising stop .. 1 play .. penaly stop .. 4 hours later .... 1 play stop ...
Bullseye. Play 45 minutes, advert 45 minutes advert end with non us football.
Yeah but what about all that instant gratification.. whoopin an a hollerin as the 'ball' moves forward by inches before eveyone stops, gets in a huddle and decides what to do next. Anyway, I thought it was called Gridiron
