TALES FROM NERDVILLE by Joe Bonamassa
TOOLS OF THE TRADE, PART 15
This month's “Tools of the Trade” is a guitar Joe Bonamassa really loves, the 1957 Les Paul Junior. The most well known user of this instrument was Mountain guitarist Leslie West, who was universally beloved for having one of the heaviest guitar tones of all time. But there are many different sounds, both ultra clean and distorted, that this instrument can provide, making it a perfect choice for just about any type of guitar-based music.

Joe playing a 57 Junior is as good as it gets. That Gibson sound is seriously unmistakable. Thanks JB.

He said he hasn’t played in two weeks . . . after killer blazing countrified licks. . . . Perhaps I should lay off a few days . . Smoking’ playing Joe!

Joe is right. I have a reissue tv special, and its a real gem. It can go from bright cleans when dialed back, all the way to 50 lbs of beef wound out. The only thing I did with mine was put a mojoaxe compensated nickel tailpiece on it. All is right in the universe👍

What makes Joe so special is his humble background. A nerdy kid who loved guitars and gear.

Frank Rekard played one of the best country solos ever on a LP jr. on Wheels by Emmy Lou Harris when he was in The Hot Band. If you know how to use your hands, a Junior can do almost anything.

I have an Epiphone Custom Shop Les Paul Junior and it's my go - to guitar. It's just so easy to plug and play, a quick tune up and you're away. Not quite like Joe though.

Big fan with a question. Joe have you ever came across a 57 junoir with only 4 digit serial numbers in large thin line format? Solid mahogany neck and body, dog ear pickup but modified before I found it in 86 or 87.headstock showed no name.plays like butter and still does.only info I have is a gibson rep said it was a low end model probably sold for 100.00 back in 50s. Not looking to sell it.just curious about its history.

If we want to nerd out, that is NOT a junior. That is a "TV Model." Yeah, I know. It's okay to call it a junior - but in the old catalog and on the headstock it doesn't say "junior".
