In this doom metal guitar lesson I teach you the entire rhythm and lead sections from Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath. The song is broken down into its main riffs, each demonstrated and explained in full detail.
The song begins with the classic wah pedal intro riff in the key of E Minor and utilizes the E Natural Minor Scale {R, M2, b3, p4, p5, b6, b7}. The remainder of the song's riffs utilize elements from the E Blues Scale {R, b3, p4, b5, p5, b7} along with a M7 interval during the third riff.

Thanks to everyone who picked up a Does It Doom? Trucker Hat this week! Let me know which one you got in the comments below! Limited amount remaining at www.doesitdoom.com/shop
I got one, and I was very excited when it came! I put the sticker on my case and the pin on my strap. I really appreciated the handwritten note, it was really cool!
Gavin McKay that’s so cool man. I genuinely appreciate that you enjoy the channel enough to show your support. Thanks again!
I love my RiffMaster! It's my fav treble boost. Thanks so much Steve!
Karen DiZefalo I’m glad you’re, still enjoying it, Karen! I think it does the tone really well!
oh yeah, btw, first Sabbath riff was Under The Sun!
This is a much underrated and easy to play Sabbs track, but that shouldn't distract from the massive nature of the song
Absolutely!
Black Sabbath was the first riff I ever learned. Shortly thereafter, Iron Man \m/
Badass first riff!!!
Does the E Standard doom?
YES, IT DOES!
Nice video
Thanks man.
I'm a bassist myself and the first Sabbath riff I learnt was Hole In The Sky
So good! Thanks for watching!
Yes, Electric Funeral DOES Doom! Great lesson it got me over the hump on the bridge finally. TY
That's great to hear!!!
“Children of the grave” lesson would be great.
Indeed!!
Perfect tone bro! Love this!
Thanks, Donald. Glad you dig it!
Cornucopia was the first one I learned from start to finish, still my favorite Sabbath song to play (tied with Into The Void of course) As always, looking forward to the future content! Keep on killing it Steve!
I'd love to teach Cornucopia. Such killer riffs! Into the Void gets requested a ton as well.
Frigging amazing dude, awesome tone!!!!
Thanks Mark!
cheers for the lesson and the advice the other week on fb, good stuff!
Sure thing bro. Thanks for watching!
First Sabbath riff was paranoid. But full song was Into the Void!
Into the Void is just pure Iommic riffage!
The first ever riff I learn was Iron Man. The first full Black Sabbath song I learn was Into the Void. Thanks Steve for the lesson, I managed to play my first "solo". Thanks again, Master Weedian.
Another awesome video dude.
And the first Sabbath riff/song I learnt to properly play was Electric Funeral, and still love playing it to this day.
Also please can you do a tutorial for Pentagram - Sign of the Wolf.
Thanks man. I have been itching to do some Pentagram since the very beginning of the channel. I think it will happen soon! 🐐🐐🐐
Great job as always dude. 🤘🏽
Thanks!
Right on man! Sick playing. Thanks for the break down.
Thanks, Connor! Hope you found it useful.
Really evil sick sound their man 👍🏼
Shirt game strong!
Tony would be proud of you man. You nailed it. Laney sounds nuts!
Thanks, brother. The back of the shirt says "Balls - Tune Low Play Slow" lol. An oldie.
@@DoesItDoom When I saw Crowbar this year Kirk says after high rate of extinction " Yea man if that ain't heavy a pork chop ain't greasey just ask yo momma"
Hahahaha
@@joshww2339 hahahah!!! He's so awesome.
That's a brutal sound, overtones everywhere, holy cow !
this is actually the first sabbath song i ever learned. great tutorial btw!
Nice! Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
This was the first Sabbath Riff I learned. In late 87 from a bootleg cassette I got somehow. In Oklahoma then nobody liked Sabbath. Thanks for the post, I will play this today! 🤘🏽
That's awesome!
Thank for the lesson 👍🎸
This goes so hard, brother. Another killer lesson. Thanks !
....And I'm a bass player first song was N.I.B.
That was the first tune I learned on Bass as well!!
Amazing tone!
Thanks, max!
This vid tutorial is great! Within 30 mins I am able to pick up this song!
This brings so great memories! It was the first ever song I learned 12 years ago! 😁
Awesome! Great place to start!
@@DoesItDoom For sure! See you in the next vid! 🖤
Excellent channel!
Thanks for watching!
My very first Sabbath song I learned was electric funeral, with an old school vox wah pedal, still to this day my favorite wah pedal.
The song is just so fun to play, start to finish.
The album Master of Reality when Tony tuned down to C is what started doom/stoner. After Forever, Lord of this World, Into the Void. Electric Funeral has jazz influence in the bridge part. Wicked World has alot of jazz influence as well.
Insane tone
Much appreciated. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Nailed the tone once again, Steve! Great job. NIB was my first. I'm not much of a hat guy but I'd buy a DiD shirt in a heart beat.
Thanks, Chris! NIB was an early one for sure. I remember learning the intro solo on bass as well. I will do a shirt soon for sure! Thanks man!
Does It Doom? I second the shirt motion
I liked so much. 🤘
So glad to hear it!
Thanks
Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath through a Marshall Model 2098 and fender 2x15 bassman cab cranked in the basement.....parents didn't care because they used to take me to concerts as a kid and introduced me to sabbath and a lot of crazy music
popeye very cool!
Great lesson!! Thanks,man👍✌👊
Glad you found it useful man!
And by the way. Great lesson man! ⚡⚡🤘🤘
Thanks man!
Oh my love.. that sg
A beauty for sure.
Those two riffs in Black Sabbath were the first riffs that I learned.
Good spot to start!
Good lesson dude, I definitely wasn't doing that slide upon the 5th string all this time
Had to watch Tony play it to catch that one!
First Sabbath riff I ever learned was Black Sabbath. Nothing could compare to the haunt of that classic riff!
I have great memories of jamming on that one with friends as a kid as well.
First riff was Ion Man! Thanks for the lessons.
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this - very rad!🤘🏼💀🤘🏼🔥🔥🔥
Sure thing! Glad you enjoyed it!
first ever sabbath riff was Sweet Leaf 🤘great lesson!
Great first riff! Thanks for watching!
First sabbath riff for me was Electric Funeral then followed by Symptom of the Universe and my hat just arrived! Love live Iommi!
Great riffs! Thanks for grabbing a hat and supporting the channel -- I appreciate it. Hope you dig the hat!
I love these Black Sabbath videos !! I have an Axe Fox 3 and wish there was a preset pack.for modelers. . Thinking about using a fuzz lord into my Axe Fx. Then laney cab IR
Well, as Im feeding the dogs this morning I look at my update and you are doing Black Sabbath, the PRIMARCHS of Doom as I am LISTENING to the first 3 albums on loop. Coincidence? NO!!
And Symptom of the Universe. Learned it when I was playing in a band in HS. We needed a song outside if our originals to play when we were playing shows.
I was 17. The guys I was playing with were in their 20s. They introduced me to many of the classic framework for metal in the 2 years I playes with them. Will always be grateful for them doing that. I amna bassist and I had a LOT of fun playing Geezers basslines in that song.
I have distinct memories of jamming Symptom with my buddies as well. What great riffs! Thanks for watching!
@@DoesItDoom and Geezer is one THE grandaddy of Metal Basslines.
Steve Harris and Geezer Butler made me play this imstrument.
Lol
I love that Crowbar - Old Fellow Rest shirt. My favourite Crowbar album
I love Iommi use of the Minor Pentatonics in riffs and licks
On the back it says “BALLS TUNE LOW PLAY SLOW” lol
this is the song that inspired me to pick up the guitar, my dad was always into old school rock stuff so as a kid i never heard much heavy stuff other than the Paranoid CD he gave me... hearing the crazy sounds that Tony pulled out of his guitar on Electric Funeral blew my mind, i was six years old and it was the heaviest shit i'd ever heard!
Awesome as usual man! Thanks! First riff was “War Pigs”!!!
Thanks, brother! War Pigs is a great one as well. Haven't played it in a long time...
Snowblind, I felt so fucking badass being able to play this from start to finish.
I love that Special mate. Great video thank you. Mine was Iron Man I think, long time ago now.
Thanks, bro, it's a great guitar. Glad you liked the lesson!
I picked up both of the hats this week! Couldn't help myself. Great video lesson Steve, this is such a great song and awesome to see you do such a good lesson on it. Iron Man was 1st! Dad showed it to me (:
Cheers man!
Jason
Appreciate the support buddy!!! Hope you dig the hats.
Love the Crowbar t-shirt!
Thanks. It’s an old one!
Hi first riff was"beyond the wall of sleep" sometime in spring ' 73 on a friends Eros Les Paul and Audition 50 watt combo(sold in UK Woolworths I think) i' m pushing 60 but I still love those gut churning riffs. Cheers great channel!
That’s beyond awesome! Thanks so much for watching!
I think sweet leaf was the first sabbath riff I learned. Still love playing their material to this day
Always!
I listened to the lesson and very nice demo.
One thing you might think of if you are running your Laney 60watt amp on 120VAC is that it was originally designed for 110VAC. When I measured my LA100BL at 120VAC, it was running the tube filaments above specs. I put it on a Variac at 110VAC and everything is correct so the tubes should last a lot longer.
The new BCC/Laney LA30BL was designed for 120VAC, so it is fine.
Just a bit of info.
Thanks for watching, Richard! I Variac down to 110VAC as well.
First sabbath song i ever learned was paranoid!
Mr iommi rules....
Great lesson.keep it up!
He does indeed! Thanks for watching!
First riff was "heaven and hell"! Thanks for another great lesson, and I'm digging the "it dooms" page!!! Fucking brilliant!!!🤘☠🤘
Glad you made it over to @itdooms!!! I love seeing and hearing everything that gets shared. So fun.
I started in bass (and it's still my main instrument) but mess around with a guitar every once in a while. Iron man was first riff on bass, NIB first song and Planet Caravan on guitar, which is actually my favorite song by them, despite not being like the others. I love stoner and jazz and it has both those vibes
The paranoid album has a bunch of jazzy stuff that makes it pretty unique. Love it.
Thanks for the great lesson! My first Sabbath song was Iron Man.
Sure thing. Thanks for watching. That was definitely an early one for me as well!
I was raised on Sabbath, Zepplin, and Bach. First riff, and that made me HAVE to play guitar, was in Black Sabbath, 333635635635 hell yeah \m/. First full song was Sweet Leaf.
P.S. Thanks for the updated tuning installment.
I can remember struggling to play that riffs with all down strokes when I was a kid. I think I had read Tony say that he did it that way in a Guitar World installment of his Heaven and Hell article. Glad you like the updated guide!!!
Great content, subscribed!
Any love for Trouble/the Skull? Would love some tone videos for their sound
Thanks for the sub! Huge love for Trouble!!! Will cover some of their work eventually for sure.
That Laney head is ill. Love it
First Guitar riff waaaassss Electric Funeral on an Acoustic taught to me by Girlfriend at the time.My Iommic life began.
Nice!!
Iommic life began! Thats awesome
Iommic is henceforth added to the English language and the guitarist vernacular. Iommic-of and relating to the iconic, immortal works of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi.
AL is my spirit Animal
You are Elohim the best!
This song is simple but, all the ambience and effects makes it really scary
Yes! A classic!
Yeah! Love old doom metal acts such as Pentagram and Sabbath
First Sabbath riff was Iron Man 🤘 Hey man that was an awesome lesson, by far the best one I have seen for this song, subscribed 🤘😎🤘
Thanks man! I studied a lot of live footage of Tony playing it when I put the lesson together. Did my best to get it right.
My first Sabbath song was War Pigs. Really my first riffs and song I learned period. Now have a ‘61 reissue SG special with P-90s because of Tony and Sabbath.
hemnair75 Awesome!
My first was sweet leaf, had to work a bit on that solo.
That solo is fun to mess around with.
My first guitar riff was Sweet Leaf!
A classic!
My first riff was electric funeral but i didn't know much then. It was Just when i started playing. I remember i couldn't figure out how he had this sound. And of course it's the wah. Killer lesson
First personally may have been nib but first sabbath song I ever played through in a band was paranoid 🤘🏼
Both early ones for me for sure! Thanks for watching!
Children of the Grave was the 1st Sabbath riff I learned from Tonys guitar world column back in the 90s
That column was so awesome!!! Had a few issues. Wish I had the whole series.
Congrats for the Channel, awesome lessons. Could you do plannets collide by crowbar? Keep dooming!
I get a lot of requests for that song. Will give it a go at some point I’m sure. Thanks for watching!
My first Sabbath riff? Still don't have a guitar, but when checking out the local store last week I looked up their self-titled track and the main riff was easy enough with just 3 notes - still sweet as hell.
Probably butchered it a lot, but thank whatever-you-prefer for isolated booths for testing gear. :-D
That's awesome! A great first riff for sure!
First Sabbath riff I learned was Iron Man. I've loved them ever since.
first sabbath riff I learned was into the void. started off strong there
Started of strong indeed!
I’m a beginner teaching myself with just tabs and videos, sabbath riffs are so fun, so far I’ve learned riffs from Black Sabbath, into the void, war pigs, iron man, sweet leaf, and hand of doom. Also check out High Reeper, they’re an awesome doom band!
My first Sabbath riff was Iron Man, then Sweet Leaf, War Pigs, NIB, Lord of this world, and now this one :)
First sabbath riff was Symptom of the universe
First full sabbath song I learned was Black Sabbath, the ultimate doom riff
The ultimate indeed. The template.
The first Black Sabbath and first riff I EVER learned on guitar was the intro riff from Black Sabbath ,but in the key of E instead of G for some reason, by a friend of my dad's
Interesting!
The first Sabbath riff I learned was Electric funeral. Regards from Denmark 🤘⚡🇩🇰
Great riff!
First Sabbath riff I learned was Paranoid and after that I wanted to learn the rest of the riffs from that album
The first for many I'm sure!
What's up Steve another great lesson thanks my first sabbath riff def iron man it was the def the first as for trucker hat I appropriately got the Iommi one
Thanks for all the support, bro!!! I really appreciate it!
@@DoesItDoom man anything I can do to help the channel you are really helping me play better oh I just bought a crate full stack today a gx 130 c it has 4 celestin in one cab and 2 15 eminence in the other cab I paid 160$ for it with a guitar stand and a pile of new cables guitar straps guitar tool kit full of allen wrenches packs of new strings a rack mount tuner an other things all for 160 pretty good day black sabbath lesson in the am cheap gear in afternoon
Cj W that’s awesome!!
@@DoesItDoom thanks man it was pretty cheap
Black Sabbath was my first riff by Black Sabbath. Also, I need that Crowbar shirt
Great first riff. This shirt is an old one!
The first Sabbath riff I ever learned was NIB but my first son i played through was Into the Void
Great tunes! Thanks for watching!
I remember when me and my friend learned that iommic trick of bending the string behind the nut in the intro to Iron Man. We would just do that trick all the time because it looked and sounded so cool.
Yes!!!
My first complete song learned was INTO THE VOID...but had learned several other riffs before.ie sabbath bloody sabbath, NIB, Black sabbath..the heavy riffs of the songs
A great first song!
The cool of this song is that is É standard. Some tunings of sabbath I don't know how to tune correctly using fender app to tune. So a E standard makes it easier
Snowblind was first riff I ever learned 🤘
Love your site, Could there be a Down's "On March The Saints" in our future? As well as a (fingers crossed) The Obsessed, off The Church Within, track 2, "Field Of Hours". If not, no problem!!! Thanks for helpin' keep these styles and the AMAZING bands that they belong to goin'! I almost forgot a few more suggestions... Weedeater's "God Luck And Good Speed" & Goatsnake's "Slippin' The Stealth"... Again... Thank you Sir.
Already have a full lesson for God Luck and Good Speed, so you can check that out. Otherwise drop those requests on the request list at doesitdoom.com/requests
First Sabbath riff was paranoid.. first Sabbath song was... electric funeral.. great lesson!
Nice! Thanks for watching!
Nice, the first Riff I played was Paranoid
Awesome!
My first Sabbath riff was Into the Void!
Nice! Seems to be a common one!
It surely doom!
Nice video man, what Wah Pedal are you using?
This was an Ibanez Weeping Demon.
First Black Sabbath Sabbath riff I learned was Black Sabbath from Black Sabbath (1970).
First Sabbath riff I learned was the beginning of Under the Sun :)
First sabbath song I ever learned was paranoid on bass and then black sabbath(song) on guitar.
A couple classics for sure!
This break down is amazing. Thank you! And iron man 😂🤘🏽
Thanks for checking it out!
I was wondering what your thoughts were on using EMG active pickups as opposed to passive ones in achieving a true stoner metal sound. I value your opinion.,🤘🤘😊🤘🤘
To be honest I have zero experience with active pickups. I've always been a low / med output alnico magnet guy. PAF's, overwoud PAF's, P90's, etc.
DUDE you should do some crowbar … planets colide please
Will do at some point for sure!
That would be bad ass to get some Crowbar on here! Existence is Punishment was the first song I learned from them. The Riff Lord is truly a beast!⚜️🤘🏽
Yes! Crowbar would be great. Love the Odd Fellows Rest shirt!
