Close up of new born alpaca suckling

When going through my videos and photos recently, it reminded me of how many magical moments i shared with my alpacs. This is definitely one of them.
Milou was born a little early and he did not have the strength to get up on his wobbly legs. This was critical and time was not going to help, only food in his belly would. The easiest source of suitable warm mik was the mother. That was common sense and also certainly easier said than done. Knowing the shy and fearful nature of alpacas, the chances of me putting my hands on such a private part of the mother's body AND extract some milk from her teats were close to none. It was worth a try. So i tried.
Willow obliged straight away. There was no fighting, no tying up, not stress, just the open field, the members of her herd around her and her baby at her feet. She oblighed every single time and i successfully milked her and bottle fed her baby with this precious warm substance coming from her body. MIlou did very well on it and after a quick couple of days, he stood up and went to help himself!

yes, it is! He was so cute and helpless. He turned into a little Devil a few years later! We have worked out our differences now. He is a lot calmer
