@@wavetheorysound I know you aren't a huge fan of meze headphones technical abilities wise, but man do they nail the comfort. The bass is not really flat down to 20Hz. It starts to dip at 60 Hz and with that crazy peaking at 3kHz, I consider this is a bad tuning. If you want to listen these things you just do it with a linear phase EQ in the DAW. I would not use this for mixing/mastering, as I have done before. Looking for a flat headset (after diffuse-field correction is applied), which so hard to find, but now we have the Fiio FT1 Pro.
I'm a professional musician and with Oratory EQ settings these headphones are absolutely phenomenal. Sound texture, imaging, instrument separation... you can even hear effects such as reverb, compression, etc... (And this is not due to the stock tuning) well balanced and very detailed. More technical than the Sundara for me, and better sound texture. The soundstage is not very wide, but sufficient (very effective for studio work) and the right-left stereo effect is extremely precise (sometimes it even seems as if sounds are coming slightly from behind). But the stock tuning is very particular (not necessarily unpleasant but very specific) so I'm not a fan and it even could be dangerous for yous ears (I've paid the price) there is a big pic at 3k (ear gain) and these frequencies are quite corrosive for the ears especially at loud volume. So if you want tracking with it or working your instrument you have to EQ it.
Maybe I'm just a cranky, old curmudgeon, but I've got no interest in a product that I have to use software equalization to fix the tuning of. Nor do I think companies like Audeze should be given leniency in reviews just because they provide EQ support directly.
@PaulBloomlittledevil Where did I say that Audeze, or any company, had to make perfectly tuned headphones? Or that I had any issues with using EQ to tweak/personalize one to your liking? I didn't. I said that they shouldn't be given leeway in reviews for making badly tuned products just because they take well to, and directly support EQ. There's a rather sizable gap between the former and the latter.
For someone who mixes, the reason the mids are emphasized is because when mixing most of the track is happening there. If an engineer can get the midrange right it is more likely to sound good on consumer grade playback systems. Also, 3k is where a lot of harseness is located, especially with vocals.. So if its heightened when mixing, the mixer will naturally tone it down which again sounds good on other systems.

I used to be such an audeze fan but the lcd5 and all of these MM sets have been such misses. The lcd4 was 🔥🔥 they just needed to improve upon that. I fear for the future of audeze.

Thanks for the review!
Professor, thank you for another wonderful headphone review! 👌
I never wear my Audeze, as they're too heavy for my skinny neck. 😢
They've made strides with the build and weight. Still a ways to go for some.

I have OLLO for monitor use.
400i(and 400se) offers thin, lifeless sound, as nearly all of these cheap headphones do, sadly. The headphone world is a sad place, under $2K.
Have you ever tried headphones calibration done by Accurate Sound or their DSP (convolver) and presets for headphones they provide? Thanks.
No. TBH software EQ just does not interest me.

I'm trying to sell my LCD-2. 😊
Would've been nice to compare it to the Ananda Nano. Somewhat closer in price. Especially curious as to how they compare in terms of slam.
Fair. IMO Ananda Nano > Sundara, so by the transitive property...
Great review!
Incidentally, the Sanskrit word "sundara" is bereft of long vowels. 🤓

Tracking? Like track mixing?

How do you use the oratory eq? I searched, but only found some graphs. Did you copy to a vst plugin eq or something?

There is no such thing as a perfect tuning, EQ exists because we like tweeking and personalizing our experiences.

I've had a hit or miss relationship with them too. Mark Cohen is a sincere guy who cares, though. I wouldn't write them off yet.
Nothing to fear ... they were bought by Sony some time ago and there is plenty of investment is better products in the future...
