Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101: How to Eat Taiwanese Soup Dumplings!

  • Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101, read my blog post: migrationology....
One of the most famous restaurant in all of Taipei is Din Tai Fun, a restaurant that’s become famous and even synonymous for serving soup dumplings known as xiao long bao. The original location of Din Tai Fung, located on Xinyi street is only one of the many locations now around Taipei and even around the world. But since we were already visiting the Taipei 101, we decided to skip the original location and eat at the Din Tai Fung Taipei 101 branch for lunch one day.
One of the best things about the restaurant is the service and the branding - it almost runs like a fast food restaurant - the system works so well, yet of course they serve much higher quality food. We arrived to the restaurant at about 11 am and luckily that was early enough to beat the main Taipei lunch rush. We got situated down, and made our order. The dumplings are all handmade inside the restaurant, and as soon as you enter you’ll notice a small army of white dressed dumpling makers who look like they work at a hospital, but in fact they are making world class dumplings - all by hand.
The Din Tai Fung menu includes quite a few different things, but really the only reason everyone goes there is mainly to eat soup dumplings, the xiao long bao - everything else on the menu is sort of secondary, though it’s nice to have a variety of different foods on the table. But let’s start with the xiao long bao soup dumplings. What I really enjoyed about the xiao long bao at Din Tai Fung at Taipei 101 is that they were very delicate. The wrapper wasn’t too thick, but it was just nice and thin and the pork mixture inside was delicate and flavorful, but not overly salty like it can sometimes be. In order to eat xiao long bao, there was a handy instructions card on the table at the restaurant. The first step was to add some soy sauce and vinegar to your dipping bowl, then dip a dumpling into the sauce and top with ginger, then put your dumpling in your spoon and poke a hole in the wrapper to release all the soup juice, and then eat it all in one bite. The instructions worked well and I successfully enjoy all the xiao long bao.
Along with the soup dumplings another dish I tried was the minced pork topped noodles which came with a pile of hand-made noodles on the bottom with a minced pork and Chinese sausage mixture on the top. It was a little on the plain side, but it was pretty good. We also ordered a few other side dishes like pickled cucumber and the Din Tai Fung salad, all of which were good, but nothing compared to the xiao long bao.
Again, there are a number of location of Din Tai Fung around Taipei, and the Taipei 101 branch is a really nice restaurant. It’s clean, the service is really good, and it’s all about those soup dumplings.

Soup dumplings are made using a gelatinous soup broth it isnt the oils and what not. I make these at a dim sum cafe and we use the same technique thats been used since their creation.

we ate some Xiao long Bao yesterday here in the Philippines. The name of the restaurant is ShiLin restaurant. when we ate Xiao long bao, my method is when you put the dumpling on your spoon ate the top of the skin then to release the juices then sip the juice then add the ginger soy vinegar mixture to the dumpling and eat it in one bite. That dumpling is Delicious #firsttime.

Love xiaolungbao! My way of eating them: dip it into sauce then bite off the top a little bit and drink (more like sucking) the soup inside the dumplings. Then top it off with ginger and one-bite it. 😊 Xiaolungbao tastes good in any way we eat them!

I discovered Din Tai Fung in Singapore, it is now my go to place for noodles and dumplings. Alas, we - family and I - were scheduled to go there for a week in early June. Corona virus has forced a change in plans. No noodles. No xiao long bao! My favorite noodle - their minced pork with chinese shitake mushrooms. That is worth flying the 10,000 miles to Singapore to eat.

I am a huge fan of all things "dumplings", and xialongbao are one of the most amazing dumplings I have tasted so far. And Din Tai Fun is really really amazing for xiaolongbao. I havent been to Taiwan yet (but I am very tempted to go there after seeing Mark's vlogs on it). I went to Din Tai Fun in Shanghai and Bangkok several times, and so much enjoyed it. The soup dumplings are so so so so good. Thinking of them makes me so very very hungry and wanting to be in a place where I can enjoy them.

i ADORE Shao Rong Bao--they are my second favourite Yum Cha! My favourite is the kind that is fried on the bottom, but steamed on the top and served with sesame seeds and minced scallions on top. I adore them. Fun Goh and prawn balls encased in toasted almonds are my next favourites, followed by chicken feet in black bean sauce. As you can tell, I eat yum cha everywhere I travel to or live--bangkok, taiwan, hong kong, san francisco, tokyo, san diego, new york, etc.

    Hello Mark and Ying.
    As always, a great video.
I'm a big fan of noodles and dumplings.
I love it when the dough for the dumplings is very thin.
And the filling juicy, large and full of flavor.
I know you are less often outside Asia.
but you should once again be in the USA
and you're in New York, or Los Angeles!
And you're hungry on noodles and dumplings.
Then you should definitely try these places.
For me, New York is the best place for China and Asia food outside Asian countries. , The Asians have retained much of their genuine cuisine in NY. You can even find authentic cuisine.
Here's where you'll find many many delicious different food places in one place.
New World Mall 136-20 Roosevelt Ave, Flushing, NY 11354
Best Hui Mian or Che Mian Noodles I ever had.
Uncle Zhou 83-29 Broadway, Dongan Avenue, Elmhurst NY 11373
Best soup Dumplings outside China, Southeast Asien
Kung Fu Xiao Long Bao, 59-16 Main St, Flushing, NY 11355
    Queensborough Hill, Flushing
If you're in Los Angeles go to
Din Tai Fung 1108 S Baldwin Ave, Arcadia, CA 91007
keep it up, and best regards Joschi

actually what the soup is actually made of is that they freeze the soup before hand and so they mix in the frozen soup with the meat and when they steam it, that's where the soup comes from... so in a way there is some pork juices but mainly is frozen soup

We have a restaurant here in Singapore that specializes in free flow Xiao Long Bao buffets. My friends and I sometimes finish up to 30 sets. We can barely move afterwards, of course. It's called Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao.

Is the face where your eyes close, then start to laugh followed by an "oh wow!"(lol) a sincere face? Like would you do that by yourself even if the cameras weren't rolling? Hope to hear back. Blessings and keep doing the amazing work you do!!!
