- GRANDMA'S 200 YEAR OLD RECIPE "OLD FASHIONED TEA CAKES" ALL INGREDIENTS NEEDED TO MAKE ARE IN YOUR PANTRY NOW. ORIGINALLY MADE WITH MOLASSES AND LARD WHEN SUGAR AND BUTTER IS NOT AVAILABLE.
What is the origin of tea cakes?
A question we are commonly asked here at the Texas Tea Cake Company is "What is a tea cake?" According to historians, the American tea cake was created over 200 years ago by African slaves in the southeastern United States. Tea cakes were initially made by plantation cooks for the guest of white slave owners.

Making some today in honor of my grandfather. Today is his birthday, he made wonderful teacakes and jelly cakes
My mother and grandmother used to make these during my childhood. When they died, the recipe was lost. I couldn't remember the ingredients nor the amounts. Thank you! Your recipe is exactly how they made it. Now at 67, I can make my grandchildren some.
My granny used to make these. I miss her. Thank you for your great videos.😀
Glad you like them!
If you mix the extract with the wet ingredients like the eggs… makes it easier later and gets very evenly distributed!
I have been searching for the best tea cake recipe. The minute I saw that two sticks of butter I think your recipe won.😅 You just know they've got to be good with that much butter. Thanks so much for sharing the recipe .
Hi granny will make tomorrow ☺️❤️🙏🏽
I love your personality 💖🙏
Makes me miss my Grandmother 💔🌹
I use powdered sugar when kneading and cutting my shortbread cookies keeps them from tasting floury.
Great tip!

I enjoy your informative information on old fashion tea cakes
In south Louisiana, tea cakes were also called te gateau sec. My grandmother, who spoke French only, kept fresh tea cakes in her cookie jar. When I was in college, she sent me a little flour sack full of her te gateau sec. She asked my mom to deliver the message that she had broken her measuring cup (a coffee cup) so hope the cakes were as good as usual. Great video.
This was a long time ago.. I'm 82.
In college in Louisiana my roommate family sent her tea cakes from Texas in a tin case she use to just give some away but when started coming to the room that she didn't know she would charge 50 a cookie. Her Aunt then started sending more tons of cookies and our room was popular for those cookies.. wow this brings back memories. Thanks for sharing..
My Granny made them, rembering her.
My grandmother used to make teacakes. She sprinkled sugar on them before baking. I always preferred the thin, crispy ones but never turned down the thicker, softer ones LOL
I love to make tea cakes. Thanks for sharing
Hi granny I love tea cakes will make this recipe soon.
Love watching you cook
My mouth is watering looking at those tea cakes. Oh so perfect with a nice hot cup of tea. Can’t wait to try this recipe.
Next time, refrigerator your dough first for about an hour it gives the gluten a chance to rest. (They’ll maintain a better shape and won’t spread out. )Also try parchment paper. You over baked them, too dark on the bottom. Calibrate your oven temperature for better results.
And mix the sugar and butter then eggs and flour
Love mine brown on the bottom❤
You should make your OWN video.
Hi Granny👋🏾. I remember these when I was a lil girl! They use to be so good😂
My dad told me years ago that broken cookies has less calories🤣🤣
Thank you🥰love you granny!!!!
I collect Tea Cake Cookie recipes and was so happy to watch your video because I've never seen them mixed up the way you showed. Usually, the butter and sugar are creamed together. I hope to give your recipe in the very hear future. I also enjoy hearing the history of the cookie from you and all the interesting comments. Thank you for sharing.
What’s your favorite out of your tea cake recipe collection? Please share
Thanks for the recipe and history lesson included here. Going to try these , thank you!
Another awesome video! Hugs from Texas ❤️
My grandmother's tea cakes were more like your first batch. They kind of reminded me of a homemade ginger snap. I will try both ways when I try your recipe, some thin, & some thicker.

This may be what my grandmother used to make. I remember the smell and the taste. My mom said grandma just threw something sweet together for us kids to eat. I'm going to try your recipe in hopes of reliving my youth. Thank you.

And mine. I miss my grandma
It's easier to add the flavoring to the wet ingredients so it will be thoroughly combined. My mother used to talk about visiting her grandmother who always had a big dustpan full of teacakes.
Dishpan

I bought some flour to make some teacakes for my family, because your lovely video made me remember how my Mama made lemon or vanilla teacakes every week for us; and they were always made with love, for that's the key to delicious teacakes. Thanks @Granny Karma. Bless you dear friend! 💞🍥🍥🍥🍥💞
