Those who founded moti mahal in Delhi were Punjabi refugees who came from Peshawar, they used to work in a restaurant in Peshawar called moti mahal, name of both founders were kundan and they were chefs in that restaurant, the owner's of Peshawar's moti mahal was mokha singh

The original owners and the ones who invented Butter Chicken were the Gujrals. Chaddhas are newer owners of the restaurant. A lot of things would have changed, including the recipes. The Gujral family also has many Moti Mahal restaurants under two separate companies, across India and in other countries too. I don't know if they still use the original recipe. But as far as the Daryaganj one goes, geographically, it is the original Moti Mahal restaurant with the name, but was bought by Chaddhas in in early 1990s.
Me and my friend went there in march and mahn it was empty we thought this place might not be that good as reviewed but it held its place, butter chicken was really awesome, it was our badluck that we already had our stomachs half filled and couldn't finish the food, hoping to go there in oct again.

We had been to this restaurant in around May 2022, following all the hype and the news. The entire place was vacant, we were alone in that entire place and then one more family came in. The entire time construction was happening while we were waiting for the food and Mr. Chadda’s hospitality was horrendous. This told us why Moti Mahal was not famous. I walked up to him and asked to shut the work down. Then the most amazing thing arrived, we were extremely excited to eat the butter chicken. Alas, the butter chicken was PATHETIC. We haven’t been there and haven’t recommended this place to anyone ever since. If you’re a butter chicken fan, I’d suggest you go to these places in order: Daryaganj (CP or any branch), Tandoori Kingdom (Punjabi Bagh), Downtown at Leisure Valley (Dal Makhni is to die for as well).
Thanks for sharing your experience and the better places to go..... I went to Moti Mehal , the same branch many years ago and got a very negative vibe as the place was empty. Just took a U turn and decided not to eat there. After reading your comments I just realized that the gut feeling was correct.

I ate at thar restaurant in 1977. I recall the food was good and i recall a small group was also performing live singing. Yes i ate butter chicken. That road in front of the restaurant still looks same after 45 years.

Well lets keep the whole butter chicken story aside . I was born in delhi and being a butter chicken fan myself i can assure you that this place is definitely overhyped. Butter chicken they serve is well below average . 15 years ago this place was a great delight but not now. I have tasted many butter chicken in Delhi-Ncr and here are some of my recommendations:
Punjabi Grill (Ambience mall Gurgaon) - best quality i found till now
Sandoz restaurant (Tilak nagar)
Gulati's / Havemore (Pandara Road) - Most Expensive but good taste
Kareem's/Al jawahar (Both are equally good)
Moti mahal deluxe NDSE2 ? Best butter chicken in NCR

One time visit is must , so that we actually see where butter chicken originated …. Our tastebuds r more towards spicy and savory kind of BC but this one is slightly on sweeter side and they don’t use onions as well in prep .. but for a change one must try … I also felt tandoori was an dry side …
