    What Tungsten do you guys use?

    • @ShowMeThePony
      @ShowMeThePony 6 років тому

      HourGlassFab same as you basically. 2% Lanth and Thor with an occasional E3. The more I use the E3 the more I’m starting to favor it. How do you think the E3 compares to the layzr (green) or the pink multis?

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  6 років тому +2

      ShowMeThePony I think they are all close to be honest. Layzr in my opinion is better for steel.. e3, tri blend and multi mix are definitely all close. I use pink all the time though, my go to lately.

      E3, tri blend and multi mix are all good for aluminum and steel. At least in my eyes, arc characteristics are to close to notice.

      I use 2% Thor for everything. I'll use it for short aluminum jobs, but if im doing long al runs i like the e3.

    Thanks for this explanation! Am new to TIG and bought a pack of 10 x 175mm Golds - mainly because they are cheaper than any (on eBay) - and was a bit worried that no one on UA-cam seems to be using them! They seem to be working fine for me (though I am new) but after this explanation, I’m happy they are good, thanks.

    For use with my Lincoln Square Wave TIG transformer machine, I prefer zirconiated. It balls up just like pure, but withstands a lot more amperage. I can use 2% lanthanated if I keep the balance above 7 on the machine, but if I use too many amps or set the cleaning action too high, it doesn't ball but develops a bunch of nodules and just goes to crap. For lower amp/more electrode negative, it works pretty well.

    Hello, New to TIG and scouring the innerwebs trying to find my baseline and you have been extremely helpful in that for the tungsten. I thought my brain was about to overload. Seems as though it's not as confusing upon gaining a bit of knowledge I hope this is actually the case. I did a small bit of stick in recent years but I'm so impressed with the multitude of materials and the appearance of the finished product that after much review I recently bought a PRIMEWELD-CT-520D 50A Plasma Cutter / Stick Welder Comb. By no means was it top of the line but it wasn't the bottom either. I decided I would start with 2% Lanthanated blue.
    Thanks again enjoyed you video very helpful and well done - Van

    I have watched your Cup video and this Tungsten video, great content, and I like others appreciate the accurate info and non biased input.
    Brad HGF - What would you recommend for tungsten and cups to weld mild steel as well as stainless? Have not had much seat time with TIG, and still trying to understand all the differences needed to effectively produce good results with proper materials and the much needed practice. (Edited to add) Materials to weld would be in either mild to stainless with the general size and thickness being 16 ga - 1/4", and anything from round tube (thin wall to .120 wall), angle, or plate.
    Thank you for the great clips and videos

    Im new to tig welding, Im doing a lot of chromo, and 1020 mild, using e3 purple 1/8 .
    What ive found is prep work and preheat, and machine setup is far more useful than gettin nitpicky with electrode selection, for me that is.
    Still new , maybe been tig welding for 6 months, but have stick and wire for a long time.

    What specifically does 1.5% lanthiated do that 2.0% doesn't & makes you like that more & on what metal . Would 2.0% be your go to on aluminium rather than 1.5 & would it be for the same reason . Question asked so i know what to look for once i start trying the 1.5% out since that's what i've bought & i'll more than likely at some point try out some 2% now that you've mentioned it Edit: I do realize when you mention preferences , however i'd like to get an idea what to look for when i experience what you did when using 1.5 & made you change to 2.0

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  6 років тому +1

      scorp NZ I just feel like arc stability and tip erosion rates are better with the 2% lanthanated over the 1.5% But it could totally all be in my head! Let me know how you like the 1.5%.

      Tig welding is a new venture for me & i'm not a professional welder tho i can gas & stick weld reasonably ok, just don't walk into any tower blocks i welded on lol . It's for maintenance of ally mower bodies that i need to repair at some point soon & yeah i think it'd be a good idea to get some 2.0% since it's not that big an expense. I've seen enough welding video's to know what you mean by arc stability & that's one issue i'd rather not have to deal with until i'm more proficient . cheers

    The machine I have is a Tig 165S 160amp dual voltage 120/240 volt DC inverter. I'm going to be welding custom chopped bicycle frames. From what I can tell most are aluminium or aluminium alloy. A few are steel or have mild steel parts. So my questions are do I need to switch tungsten when changing between steel tubing to aluminium tubing? if so then what type am I needing. I haven't welded in 30 yrs and back then I either was stick welding or used a mig machine. But that was completely different projects then. Trailers, BBQ smokers, big thick framed stuff now I'm having to deal with thin walled light weight material that if my well breaks can kill someone since these custom chopped bicycles have anything from a 50cc 2 stroke up to 150cc 4 stroke 4 speed motorcycle motor powering them.

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  3 роки тому

      Use 2% lanthanated and you can jump back and forth between reactive metals (steel) and non reactive materials (aluminum). I’m a big fan of that tungsten.. great tip erosion resistance characteristics on DC and also soft enough to just barely round the tip over on AC, some tungsten is extremely hard (thoriated) and it like to split or spit pieces off of the end on AC.. which is why I wood recommend thoriated for AC work. Goodluck!

    @Hourglassfab, Hey Dude, Thanks so much for the great education on Tungsten. I've really been needing this, and I've had a tough time finding anyone who could explain the almost "Black Magic" of Tungsten Colors, and Transformer vs. Inverter, and A/C vs. D/C.
    You broke this down to a very simplistic way.
    I have a Transformer Machine Miller Syncrowave 200, and am getting ready to buy a new Inverter Multi Process Machine this week.
    That too was one hell of an education! I was all set to purchase a Fronius Transsteel 2200, only to realize at the last second that it was not capable of A/C Tig. That really sucked a big Donkey. Well after going looking for a Multi Machine that was capable of A/C Tig, thinking I would just get another Miller, think again. From what I've seen Esab is about the only Company that manufactures a Multi Process Machine that can Tig in A/C. ( please correct me if I'm wrong, and enlighten me as to whom else does, and doesn't cost 10 grand)
    So it looks like I'm going to be buying the Esab Rebel EMP 205ic.
    I am very excited to get all the great functions of an Inverter Machine such as A/C balance and all the other good stuff.
    The other thing that I found out that sucked about the Fronius is that it does not have High Frequency Start. Scratch/Lift Arc Start only. Another thing I had to educate myself on. I've only ever used Syncroave 200 and 250, so I only knew High Freq Start.
    I really wanted that Fronius though just because of how Cool it would have been to be able to Mig Aluminum without a Spoolgun or a $2500 push/pull gun. I was so looking forward to that.
    Very sorry to get so long winded.
    Once again thanks so much for the knowledge. I am a dedicated Subscriber now!

      Sam Butera hey Sam! Thanks for joining the channel. I appreciate it. I am currently out of stock on both products and waiting to decide what I want to do about the designs before I stock more again. Here or Instagram will eventually show what I’m up to when it comes to those two products. Thanks again!

    Why is the music so loud! Destroys the enjoyment when soft content is bombarded by overcompressed music.

    #Hourglassfab thanks for this video. Verry informative. I usually stayed with two percent lanthanated as Jody usually recommends, but might try out some multi mix tungstens now. Greetings from Germany

    Great channel #HOURGLASSFAB I subscribed,, I am a bit lost , I have a Syncrowave 250 that has AC bal,, when I went to a night class for basic welding I was taught to use green,, so what I am hearing is change to the red and or Blue? Thanks for the info

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  6 років тому

      Ye Olde Pirate You can use rare earth blends.. like pink, or 2% lanthanated (blue). 2% thoriated (red) for steel is the same. 70%-82% electrode negative is the ticket. The thinner the material, the lower balance.. in turn means less penetration. More balance, more penetration. Try a different color electrode and don’t ball the tip.. the more electrode positive the more you ball the tip. Machines with balance adjustment use 50% EN and 50% EP. instant tungsten ball on AC.
