  • Resoling hiking boots is a fantastic way of extending the life of some of our most important pieces of kit!
Isaac Jackman Shoe Repairs is the specific place I went, and his work was fantastic: isaacjackman.ie/services
There are cobblers the world over, so wherever you are, look into what they can do for you :)
Since filming and editing this video, I've done another few hikes in the blue Merrells and can say the sole seems very solid.

I love the sustainability mindset, and it's definitely something I can be better at. I'm definitely still in the Gear Acquisition Syndrome phase 😂 Thanks for sharing the results, delighted to hear they came back great!

It’s a beautiful phase to be in, enjoy it! 😁
And I know there’ll still be bits I want to get, but excited to explore more sustainable avenues this year

I had the same levels of non-success attempting this myself with that klebfest glue. Sometimes having a DIY attitude isn't the best approach. I learned that after trying to do my own appendectomy.

Well, if you're still with us after a self-appendectomy, then congratulations?! 🤣 But yes same, while I a big DIY person, I'm also very happy to go to the professional when I need to 😎

Got some Lowa boots resoled and restored by them a few years back. My original Renegades. They did a brilliant job, even replaced the heel lining. It's a great way to extend the life of comfortable old boots.
Also, some clothing manufacturers offer s service where they restore older clothes and resell them. Such a good idea. We can't just dispose of stuff all the time.

Lowa , for me were the worst boots in my experience. Especially if you use them .
My sole fell off too . I was told it was the bog water .
Funny how no other boots have the sole separate from the boot .

It's called hydrolysis. It affects all boots with PU midsoles to a greater or lesser degree depending on the softening agents used. If you Google it you will find people complaining about many manufacturers of expensive boots. Meindl, Salewa, Asolo etc. If you buy a PU midsoled boot you have to care for it by cleaning the boot and regularly wearing the boot to aerate the midsole so it doesn't degrade. It hasn't happened to me since I first experienced the problem 20 years ago with a pair of Meindl.
Alternatively buy an EVA midsoled boot which won't rebound quite so well when hiking with a pack but also won't suffer from PU degradation.

Is that a genuine replacement Vibram sole? I notice the logo is black not yellow.

Yes it is! Not all of the soles Vibram produces have the yellow logo, but it is very common for them to be yellow :)
