Something about the TL that the Boss can't replicate. Some depth. All these years later and the TL is still killing it!

I am not a expert but I have owned the timeline and now I own the Boss DD-500. When I went to guitar center and tried the DD-500 I was very Expressed with how warm the pedal was.
There are many different ways of manipulating the Boss internally.. the Knobs are just a quick way to increase, Time, strength, tone, mod... Internally is where tweaking gets all the intricate details.
Let say you only want want only one tape head: Sweet! or maybe tape head 2 or tape head 3 or all three at once, Its their.
Also Boss has upgrade with increased perimeter internally.. so the pedal is evolving into everything one could want.. Boss has the ability to shape your repeats to be darker or brighter.. Remember the pedal is getting better.. .
In the Video the did the Boss a disfavor because the internal setting where not in-gaged.. no warble or tweaked tape...
    Love the Echo Plex....

Strymon's Timeline has a reverb quality to its delay sound while the DD-500 doesn't. In this sense it's like apples to oranges, I'd prefer the DD-500 not only because of price but because I have a nice reverb pedal which can compliment it.

whether your just a hobbyist or your in two different bands like me you cant go wrong with either of these delays. In a band context, when you have to constantly make adjustments in a live settings for the sake of your "TONE" then the fun factor is gone baby! Alot of the things I've found that I was so anal about don't really matter when 4 or 5 other guys in the band are cranking loud! specialy true when couple of guys from the audience 10ft from stage are half drunk, they don't give a dam about your echoplex settings or what milliseconds did you tap the tempo at. That's not to say ditch musicianship, all I'm saying is stop nit picking stuff and go have a good time. Whether your going for a bang for your money or for instant gratification either one of these will do. What I've come to realization with from gigging almost every weekend, nobody gives a dam... So just get either one and have a good time,or get both if you could afford it...

I just got a DD-500 today. After menu diving in it, it's clear this thing has beastly capabilities that will take me years to explore. If you are trying to decide between the two, I think I can help you decide. If you will just take the presets and run with it, I'd probably take the Timeline. If you will ever envision yourself hooking it to a computer to design or upload other people's patches, then you're a DD-500 person.

  • @jemandthemystery

For what it’s worth, both sound great. With Strymon, I prefer the sound of their smaller, dedicated delays to any Timeline equivalent setting. The big Boss is a fantastic all round toolkit that can do modulation work as well (chorus/tremolo/vib/phase-ish stuff) AND you always have the option of two different delays (with their own pan/EQ etc) on tap. So...I ended up choosing the Boss DD-500, Strymon El Capistan and DIG. It doesn’t mean you have to use them all at once but they cover a lot of territory for different moods and song types.

I myself prefer the sound of the timeline. Instant gratification with the sounds. It’s just beautiful, while the boss really didn’t speak to me. Still, i think both are useless if you need to switch fast from a delay you have already running on pedal A to a delay on Pedal B. The lag switching in the timeline is about half a second and the boss is almost a second or two during which the sound is dry. If you need this switch of delays to happen as fast as pressing a distortion pedal then both are utterly useless no matter how well or bad they sound. And no reviews of these pedals show this mainly because the reviewers are manipulating the pedal with their hands (switching pedals) and so this huge lag problem is not noticeable. Hey, happened to me. Spent about one hour testing the timeline at the store (with the pedal on a stand) and had to buy it because of the sound. Got to the first rehearsal and while using pedal A with a slap back and needing to change to another delay, boom, where was the delay of pedal B when I needed it? Too late for the first note of the chorus. Thought it was my mistake but no. The cool guys at strymon told me that there is indeed a lag. So had to return it. Today went back to the store to test the dd500 and now immediately with my feet and bam. Even worse than the timeline. Wish the reviews mention this detail. So far only the DL4 does this switch without a lag. But the sound is a bit meh so had to let it go. In fact that’s why I initially went to the timeline. Because the sound of the dl4 was a bit weak. But now I’m missing it while I hunt for a pedal that does this right.

Finally, I find someone mentioning this...and from a portuguese fella! bought a flashback 2x4 a while ago and the lag switching between A and B was ridiculous. I actually though the pedal was broken, I couldn't find anyone talking about this anywhere (I even posted on forums, spammed dozens of youtube reviews and nothing). What is even weirder is that I was eventually able to find a user of the previous version of that same pedal, asked him about this...he sent me a video, and from what I could get the lag time was actually non existent in the older version (or maybe really short). Knowing this I just returned mine, thinking that it was a factory flaw or something. Recently I bought a timeline to replace that same unit, and this was one of the first things I checked. Maybe you have a better ear for those things than I do, but I actually don't notice that much lag switching problem in the timeline...although it does seem to differ according to delay type. Still, it is not nearly as problematic as it was on my flashback, so I'm keeping it. Anyways, I don't understand how this is not talked about more...it really is a big problem in these types of pedals

The TL's tape delays sounds more saturated and has some higher pitched overtones. While the DD500's sounds like too much of the clean, original sound is being passed through, it's not as saturated sounding, even on the RE-201 setting. I don't like how the tape decays sputters at the end on the RE-201 setting but I think I prefer the DD500's RE-201 setting over the Tape setting. It also has that trademark Boss mid-range overtone sound to it like the DD-20. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. I think the El Cap is still a better Tape Delay.

Its impossible to choose between them. I really appreciate you making all the different modes in a shootout between both units. Its been really help, but im still on the fence for either or. I like the more organic, warmer tone of the Timeline, but i also like the brighter, more percussive sound the DD-500 has. I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses tonally and fundamentally as well. The Boss has a better screen for deep editing which is a huge plus for me. I guess my real question is, is it possible to get that warmth the Timeline gets with the DD-500, and is the Timeline capable to achieve that brightness the DD-500 can do?

I mean, they both sound great and all that, and if you were to tinker with the Boss's extensive menus you could set it up to sound even better than this demo shows.
The problem for me is that I'm savvy and I don't like to, nor can I afford to waste my money. If you're lucky you can pick up a pre owned Boss for a little over £200.....Or if you're lucky a second time you might get a Strymon for a little under £400. They always tend to hold their value that's for sure.
If I was going to buy 1 of these then I'd go for the Boss. I'd much rather spend £200 than £400. Then I could buy something else I wanted with the £200 I'd saved by not wasting my money on a Strymon, so as far as I'm concerned, buying the Boss is a win-win. 👍

You have to pan them L/R and control the wave pedal..here a guy talks about it on forum www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/psa-boss-dd-500-can-do-killer-stereo.1642517/ Can you please make a video comparison of these settings vs stock?

Great demo. And in stereo. That makes the differences obvious. Every manufacturer can buy the best digitale components on the international market. The more they buy, the cheaper they are, and a part of that margin your can pass on to the customer. Thats why the boss is cheaper. But the most value lies in the research and in the ingenious ideas of the creative mind and the software engineer. Even after existing quite a long time on the market, no other delay comes close to strymon's tape delay algorithms in the timeline and - even better - the el capistan. 32 bit don't make a good sound. Stupid, to put that on top of the marketing message.
    1. The tape echo emulation of the timeline is much more realistic.
    2. The stereo ambience is dramatically better in the timeline.
    3. The factory demos of strymon products are so much better. The Roland and Boss demos are expensive, blown up marketing shows that don't help making a buying decision.
This is the first demo that helped me to decide: I will buy strymon's el capistan.

    • @NikolausBrocke

Yes. A serious session guitarist needs at least two kinds of delays: Digital Delay types and Tape Delay types. For these big and wide 80ies clean tones or high gain solo tones you need digital delays + detune or chorus + Reverb. An analog delay (like the el capistan) can go just with your plain guitar sound because analog delays produce more space. You can dial in a bit of chorus with the special tape parameters and add the room with the diffuse and darker delay timbre. And with the el capistan you can add spring reverb emulation on top. Too bad that it has no presets.
I use a t.c g-force for in conjunction with a lexicon hall for the 80ies sounds. I use my timeline if I need a more pure delay sound. I love the delay of the timeline (especially the tape algorithm). The el capistan must be even better. It's on my whishlist.

  • @mike1967sam
    @mike1967sam 8 років тому

To be fair and honest the DD 500 is a better delay when you take into account the price point. It has better digital delays than the Timeline but other delays are not quite as good as the Timeline so if they cost the same I would have to say that they were about on par with each other but knowing that you can save over 100 bucks on the DD500 that makes it a much better delay than the Timeline in MHO.

In a band or mix, give me the boss all day. It's night and day difference in how warm it is compared to the grainy digitized (obviously synthetic) timeline. I went through the same thing. Had the timeline, got a DD500 in a trade and within a couple of days, the timeline was gone. Even the bandmated noticed how natural the difference was. With clean tones it's not as noticeable, but with any kind of gain and the boss handles it so well, stays out of the way and definitely doesn't add the color that the timeline does. I should have learned my lesson with the Flint which was a massive disappointment and my first taste of strymon. That said, if you want a good synth delay, the timeline is a solid choice.

Really disappointed with the DD-500, which is a shame because the MD-500 is amazing. Strymon still wins on tape and analogye emulation. Boss falls more into the eventide area when it comes to tape and analogue emulation. Their algorithms are not as good, but on the flip side their units are more versatile. Decision comes down to what you want to do with it, the DD-500 if you want a more up to date pedal, but if you want tape and or analogue emulation, Strymon hands down, their algorithms for this stuff is simply superior. DD-500 just sounds digital. Having said that, definitely go the MD-500 over the Mobius, I can't stress that enough.

DD-500 a great pedal and full of features for the cost level. I require a ms readout and presets and it has that better than most. I would say the DD-500 is "the delay" choice at this point in time.
