Arn Anderson is very underrated. when the Horsemen would cut a promo after Flair got done going off all excited and yelling then Arn would talk very calmly about what they were gonna do to their opponents. Just an awesome dynamic between those two.
Ole wzs great also
NWA Four Horsemen were all great talkers. Not to rag on WCW mid 90s era Horsemen, but I remember Flair, Arn, Ole, Tully, and Barry over Dean Malenko and...........whats that other guys name? I seem to have forgotten. Damn you WWE and your revisionist history!
Arn, Ole, Tully, Ric, JJ, and Dusty could really talk them into the building like few others of their time. Love them all.
Loose cannon Pillman was underrated himself
Wait, people hate you? Dude, your show is part of what got me back into wrestling. I love your show😎
Mike White Whoever hates Brian Zane is unamerican and deserves to be smacked upside the head.
Adrian Moore I'm not American and I like him.
That just means you are that much cooler and won points in my book. How are ya friend?
Adrian Moore ok
Where are you from my man?
Nick Bockwinkle. His promos were different in that he was calm, but calculated. He was smarter than his opponent and he let you know it.
He was amazing on the mic. I have a lot of respect for him.
I don't like that he held the Hulkster down.
I concur. Nick is up there with Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Terry Funk and Buddy Rogers.
I'm surprised Rick Rude didn't make it... watch his promo work, he literally laid the foundation for ANY heel and IMO he was the pioneer of the Attitude Era-- he was doing "edgy" character work YEARS before the 90's.
Mallory Carll I'm surprised Michaels after he split from Marty didn't creep in
Mallory Carll I was going to say the same thing you just beat me to it. I was young when rude was in the WWF but I still remember the way he would just talk down to everyone. He was really good on the stick.
Brock Lesnars Lovechild Shawn *might* be in the next countdown, the 1990's to 2000's. To be honest, I wouldn't put him in the top 8 of that era though. Too many other wrestlers outshine HBK... like Chris Jericho, The Rock, Austin, Vince McMahon, Road Dogg, Eddie Guerrero, Paul Heyman, etc...
I love Shawn, but he was not an elite speaker.
Anthony Lankford this is for the 70s bro they will be in 90s
Mallory Carll indeed, Rude's programs with piper and ultimate warrior was epic!
Kinda surprised Ted DiBiase didn't make this list, just his laugh should be enough to get him there.
Same with Lawler, most of his fans probably don't know him
GeoNeilUK on the same line as Dibiase, Brother Love was decent.
Heenan commentating the 92 Rumble is legendary
Jim Cornette looked like he was gonna drop the hottest mixtape to come to the streets
Looked more like he about sell you lemon car
or run a 3 card monte table in midtown
"Superstar" Billy Graham deserves a mention, especially since Hogan made the list (which I don't disagree with, for the record).
Not a wrestler, and so technically not a "promo" guy, but Mean Gene Okerlund was amazing. Look back at some of the worst promos and there is Mean Gene making a save and doing his best to make the guy still look good.
Great point
Ill say this - He doesn't get the love, but in the next list (90s/2000s) Kurt Angle should get (not to harp on a theme here) an honorable mention. Angle was and is obviously fantastic in the ring, but a lot of guys are great wrestlers. Angle backed it up with superb mic work. He could be intense, funny, chicken shit, etc. He ran the whole gamut. You HAVE to at least give him a mention if he doesn't make the actual list.
Stephen Pike angle nearly made my cut.
Dr. D David Schultz should have atleast gotten an honorable mention. He was the original Stone Cold.
Dr. D is the first guy I thought of!
Dr D was the best.....just look at any promo he did with Mean Gene....he made Gene laugh so hard he had to turn away from the camera.
"THE MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE, on balance off balance doesn't matter i'm better than you are yeaahhh.
Piper: "Just when you think you have all the answers, I change the questions!!"
Piper had as much to do with the wrestling explosion of the 80s as Hogan did. Piper was the perfect foi to the all-American hero Hogan portrayed.
With that said, he also probably gave the best movie performance of all time from a wrestler in his portrayal of John Nada in "They Live".
Dr D was one of the best wrestler promos in the early 80’s. Him slapping John Stossel over the head in December 1984 ended his WWF career or else he would have been a heel spoken about in the same breath as Rowdy Roddy Piper.
Im surprised Mr. Perfect or Million Dollar Man wasn't on this list
im with you all the way with good ol' ted
"Habitual Line Stepper"
love it
CHARLIE MURPHAYYYY!!!
Cocaine's a hell of a drug...
I wish I had more hands so I could give these lists FOUR THUMBS DOWN!!!
Hellwyck lol
Personally, as a French Canadian, I always loved the Rougeau's promos, especially when Jacques was The Mountie, they were always so good with their gimmicks as silly as they were. I always found them entertaining.
One of my favorites thanks to youtube is Dr D David Schultz, his promos were amazing(sort of like a pre Stone Cold Steve Austin). He was just a year or so before my time so I never really got to watch him as a kid. His Hogan/San Francisco AWA promo might be my all time favorite.
The George Foreman grill was almost the Hulk Hogan grill, but the creators of the grill called Hogan and he never picked up the phone or return the call, so they asked George Forman to use his name instead
Methphaless according the Hulkster anyway. And when has he ever lied?
Methphaless he was probably to busy working out to answer
He's said a few different versions of that story just like many of his stories. I read once that he picked the thunder blender over the grill and in another he said he missed the call cause he had to drop off his kids at school. Regardless what actually happened, he must be kicking himself for that missed opportunity.
You and Whatculture are the best buddy! Thank you for the videos.
Years later Brian Zane is still the best and WhatCulture....eh
Props for putting Jake Roberts on here. That man has possibly the two best promos I've ever heard.
Never knew Piper was first with the sit-down ring interviews :o
Honourable mention should go to Terry Funk as well. Some of his promos during his feud with Lawler were epic. Harley Race also gets overlooked as a great promo guy too.
I know I'm gonna catch heat from Heyman marks but Bobby Heenan is imo the greatest manager of all time.
No argument from me,Tony.
I would agree, and 2nd probably Gary Hart.
It's very close and I love 'em both but I grew up watching Hennan and over time my respect for him has only grown. I give the edge to Heenan.
Cheers.
I'm a Paul Hey man guy and I think Heenan is the G.O.A.T. I would actually have Jimmy Hart above Hey man. he truly had 2 success stories imo. Stone Cold and Brock Lesnar. the rest he managed were already hot. with the exception of the Dangerous Alliance which I loved
Well that's fine because remember Heyman doesn't consider himself a manager anyway. He's an advocate. So yeah Heenan is the best manager.
Slight teasing aside, I do agree with you.
Excuse me, what's going on? Superstar Billy Graham, Hello!
Excellent countdown, Brian. It made me smile and reminded me why I still watch wrestling and also made me sad because I fear we'll never get great promos like these again in these hyper sensitive PC times
I recently discovered David Schultz while going down the UA-cam rabbit hole. A few of his promos were a little crazy for today’s standards, but he was believable as hell.
Hope we get a top 8 promos list someday :)
Another Honorable Mention: Arn Anderson. Look at any group promo that he was in, and 9 times out of 10, he was the one bringing it home with a frank but intense style. How good was he? Look up the story of how the 4 horsemen were named.
The use of Talk Talk in the closing credits is an example understated genius.
Good catch!
"Get yourself a shovel and a flashlight and go dig up Andy Kaufman" holy shit hahaha.
Nick Bockwinkel? Terry Funk? Kevin Sullivan? Each deserve honorable mentions,
80s AWA and NWA! Kevin's best work is probably in Florida or Tennessee. Terry reinvented himself every decade, Nick was probably the best AWA champion ever.
There wouldn't be a Ric Flair without a Nick Bockwinkel. Someone who thought that they were superior to everyone. Not just in wrestling, but in the way they lived. Kevin Sullivan's satanic rants were almost two decades ahead of The Undertaker's "Ministry" run. And Terry Funk? Well, he was just a crazy S.O.B. You wouldn't have guys like Cactus Jack or Dean Ambrose without him.
+Grant Baynes He's back in RoH, and is still Evil.
I know! My ABC affiliate here in Lynchburg, VA was bought up over a year ago by Sinclair Broadcasting, so I get to see ROH whenever I can. And Sullivan is back to the same satanic ways that made him legendary in Florida.
Bockwinkel was heads & tails better than Hogan & Savage. Growing up watching the AWA Bockwinkel could make you believe he was better than God himself in the ring & talk you into watching him wrestle Kenny Jay. Sullivan, while very gimmicky made you believe he was evil incarnate. He could scare the bejeebus out of you. Those two not being on this list proves most of those that voted are nothing but WWF/WWE marks.
I loved Hollywood Hogan's promos during the Monday Night Wars.
Jake's WM 6 promo was a work of damn art. " and the money you beg for is your very own. A victim of your own greed. Wallowing in the muck of avarice."
Bobby heenan and gorilla monsoon were the reason I watched prime time wrestling most weeks!! Absolutely brilliant!! Much missed as well.
i bet Paul Heyman is on the next list.
mestre12 Agree Top 3
Jericho
Heyman
the Rock
Heyman, Rock, Jericho, Austin, Cena, Foley, Vince and Punk probably.
mestre12 I'd even throw Bray Wyatt in there. He is crazy believable and has the charisma. He fits that character too good.
mestre12 Heyman, Raven, Jericho, Wyatt, Austin, Foley, Rock, Cena would be my personal 8 (not in any order)
ShaunLovesAnimating As much as I dislike the Cena character, when he's serious, he's great. His feuds with AJ and Edge were tremendous
Best Talker of all Time and Probably the Greatest pro wrestler ever
Time to go to School
WOOOOOO Rick Flair
And also come on ZMan No love for Jesse The Body in a list of the best talkers
Blame the fans!
Shame on you Fan's!! Lol
Btw Big fan dude ,Im fairly young (24) but i discovered wrestling throug my Auntie who worked the stands in WWC and IWA in PR( i even saw Carlito when he debuted and Ricky Banderas aka Mil Muertes) and my Uncle who had a lot of old WWF tapes.Man i miss those days wrestling used to be Hot over here and it seamed like everybody was into it.
+Wrestling With Wregret OK so, um... Jerry "The King" Lawler gets an honorable mention which is cool but... what about: Nick Bockwinkel, "Superstar" Billy Graham, Arn Anderson, "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, and Paul Heyman didn't make this list? Can I blame the fans for this travesty of justice, Brian? #ShameOnYall
fidielio Because I just wanted to add one?
+Wrestling With Wregret I hear you Brian, I'm not hating but putting together a list of this type is just asking for a brow-beating from your fans... kudos to you nonetheless, for doing us all a solid and making it cool to be a pro wrestling fan again. Thanks for making this list, buddy. I'm looking forward to your next video. #BestTalkersInTheBiz #ProWrestlingPromos
I had a feeling your fans were younger after viewing the best wrestlemanias video.. As someone who quit watching wrestling right after the wcw takeover it's interesting to see, that's for sure. And, although I haven't seen wrestling in so long you are so good at what you do I now want to go watch some of the old classics. Keep up the good work.
Rowdy Piper was a maestro on the mic, who knew how to piss people off and we eventually loved him for it.
Besides Jerry Lawler, Honorable Mentions should've included Michael P.S. Hayes, Ravishing Rick Rude, & Superstar Billy Graham. Dishonorable Mention to The Ultimate Warrior, whom I believe yhe worst promo of the year award is now dedicated to (The Ultimate Warrior Memorial Worst Promo of the Year Award).
I can't believe Brian didn't do an OH YEAH! When talking about Randy Savage.
First off, great video. You explained everyone to a T. Hot Rod was the best. I love Bobby the Brain. He had one of the funniest lines in my life. A few people for a while had signs that said, "Bobby the Brain for President" at different show. His "co-host" said "Bobby! Look at that." The Brain replied,"Why would I take a paycut, and move into a bad neighborhood?" Love it.
im not not saying shes a dog, but when a bird walks by she points....
Reminds me of another one."I don't hate the guy. But, if he married a horse,he would sire a mule." LOL
Brian Zane is awesome. Keep up the good work making these video and he is a hard worker when it comes to the wrestling business.
Punk, Latino Heat, Stone Cold, The Rock, Heyman, Jericho, JR and Kurt Angle.
Hopefully they make it onto the next list.
Belfast Roastmaster i thought about Eddy but I don't think he cuts it, and JR ain't a promo, he's an announcer. You forgot Foley and Edge.
The Salty Seaman Cena's promo is also quite good
@The Salty Semen
JR has been a part of promos and storylines before, though.
Buddy Busey Not very good ones though.
I approve of Talk Talk in the end there (;
I'm so appreciative of lists like this. So many, "greatest [insert subject] of all time" are little more than what the fan making the list has seen during their time they've been exposed to the subject.
Thanks man, great episode.
Lmao, that one Jake the snake promo where he had cactus next to him is just an Ozzy Osbourne song!
One person that you forgot to mention is Jesse Ventura.
God bless you, Jake. So happy youre doing better these days
Growing up in Memphis... It was a pleasure and education to listen to Jerry Lawler on Saturday Mornings tell a story, check folks and motivate you like it was life or death to be there Monday Night!!!
Hulk Hogan? Don't you mean Curtis Axel?
Crazedgamers17 Axelmania is still running wild brother
Hull Cogan??? wtf is a Hull Cogan!
yeah funny joke
axel's promos
Curtis Axel Don't you mean Evad Sullivan???
He meant Charlie Hass
do a worst talker too
orio jules 2 words........
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO
WWWWAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
Simple ALL FOREIGN HEELS WHO DIDN’T LEARN HOW TO STRUCTURE PROPERLY
i hope ronda rousey makes the list.
Thank you for including jerry lawler, might i also add Arn Anderson was an excellent promo and a great compliment to ric flair when giving promos together
Awesome that You used the "Cream of the Crop" promo for Savage's spot. That was hilarious but awesome.
Superstar Billy Graham BY FAR
Bingo!
I thought he was gonna be number one.
Just listening to Jim Cornette's shoot interviews is as entertaining as watching a WWE match. That man speaks the truth no matter how harsh it may be. He is hilarious and has a way with words similar to Jim Ross in the Attitude Era, as shows in his podcasts.
Dr D. David Schultz......one of the best ever to cut a promo.
I used to love it when Bobby Heenan was on commentary and he used to call the fans "humanoids".
Jesse the body and Mr Perfect were damn good
Brian please do livesteam of you playing N64 Wwf no mercy
Always enjoy a WWW upload :) Keep it up, Zane!
Jake's promo on Macho Man after the cobra bit Randy was absolutely terrifying yet amazing. Easily my favorite of the era.
holy shit lawler that andy Kaufman comment was fucked
80's - Randy Savage
90's - Stone Cold/Rock
00's - Kurt Angle
10's - CM Punk
Nathan Silva 10's really suck don't they
Brian I enjoy watching you talk about Wrestling more than I like watching some this Wrestling
I loved Roddy Piper on the mic. I was very lucky to watch him at Wrestlemania 21 when he had Austin on Piper's Pit. I loved that segment. It was really fun to be there and watch it. React to it also. I chanted for Roddy was at the start and I did the "What" chants. It was nothing compared to HBK vs Kurt Angle that night but it was still a high point of WM 21 for me.
Hulk Hogan?!? Never heard of him!
Mike M He means Curtis Axel.
Oh no not this again
Dale I see you like *title vacant 1989-1983*
Do you mean Stevie Richards?
Wyn Whydoweneedalastname Not really
My top talkers are 1.Piper, 2.Savage, 3.Roberts, 4.Rhodes and 5. Hogan. I don't think much of Ric Flair and his style of talking. Honorable mention- Sgt. Slaughter.
the sarge gets overlooked for some reason, but I loved his promos ..... you maggots..... and thats an order.
Before I watch, here are some that come to mind: Roddy Piper, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, Jerry Lawler, Billy Graham, Ernie Ladd, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ultimate Warrior (yes I know), Jake Roberts, Lou Albano, Jim Cornette, Jimmy Hart, Bobby Heenan. Let's see how many of them are on this list.
I definitely agree with this list, all great talkers. Personally, I would put Lawler above Hogan in this list but that's just me. Even though I'm young I do know a lot of wrestling so yes I do know about Lawler in Memphis ha. Fantastic work yet again BZ, I always love your videos and look forward to them.
70s? Dusty, Bockwinkle, Heenan,
80s Randy Savage, Rick Rude, Jake Roberts
90s Paul Heyman, Cornette, Raven
2000 CM Punk, Kevin Steen, Jericho
OLE SammyOLE How the heck could you forget The Rock and Stone Cold?
its just my opinion. somebody will always be left out. as for austin he only had a few good years yes its BIG YEARS but short term. and I think Brian Pillman is better than Stone Cold. as for Dwayne Johnson....not a fan of his low rent comedy dick jokes. Im sorry. not a fan of that. I can respect Dwayne Johnson as the hollywood actor but the material that "made him" in WWE wasn't exactly my favorite.
Because neither is 70s or 80s era? Hell, neither hit their stride until the mid-to-late 90s. Go ahead. Name a memorable Stunning Steve Austin or Rocky Maiavia promo. I'll wait.
this list is Bullshit.
Especially the 90s and 2000s.
Rock had his best promos in 1997-2002
Austin was great on the mike in ecw and wwe.
Had memorable promos.
like wtf dude
this list is Bullshit.
Especially the 90s and 2000s.
Rock had his best promos in 1997-2002
Austin was great on the mike in ecw and wwe.
Had memorable promos.
Austin and rock were better on the mic than raven
And on par with cornette as far as talking.
2000s.
I agree with punk and jericho.
Ill put eddie on that list in 2000.
Instead of steen.
like wtf dude
Will Ric Flair be on both lists?
One take Jake said it best no one listens to a loud mouth but if you say I have a secret everyone leans in ,what a promo master.
Great list. Hard (or impossible) to argue with any of these Legends or their placement on this list.
Random thought; I would have loved to see a feud between Roberts and Piper. The Snake Pit vs Piper's Pit would have been incredible.
No Freddy Blassie or Lou Albano. This is heresy.
No Terry Funk? No Rick Rude? No Michael Hayes? I mean, yeah, all 8 guys on this list are great, but Funk, Rude and Hayes at least deserved honorable mentions.
Great List, glad Jerry Lawyer got a mention also, a legendary Heel, who was hilarious.
Only two more I can think off which could have been on the list, The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase and Ravishing Rick Rude, both great.
Great list. Some honorable mentions- Handsome Jimmy Valiant, Superstar Billy Graham, and Ernie Ladd.
Supastaaaa Billy GrhaMMMM!
CHARLIE MURPHY........Brian....thats an ancient reference for most of your fanbase!!
Pradeep Kanchan 2004 wasn’t that long ago
I can't get enough of that Lawler promo about digging up Andy Kaufman! hahaha
Great List, and video.
Ric Flair laid the foundations for Hip-Hop?
....What?!
Jesse Ventura
Superstar Billy Graham
The million dollar man
BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heenan belongs higher up, he was in a league of his own. It worked on so many levels.
I have always loved savages promos. They were always super crazy but yet somehow they made sense.
yeah I am still waiting for the Worst Hulk Hogan storylines.
You know, if Owen Hart isn't on the mid-90's list..we'll riot?
Thank goodness you put Jake "the Snake" here.....my hero growing up haha and my second favorite wrestler is your #1 nice!!!
"Habitual line stepper"
Loved that.
what hell Brian? No Ted Dibiase? are you kidding me?
I Bramblebush It isn't his list though, people voted for it.
dusty is very over rated as far as his promo skills. yes he was good , but everyine always references a single promo. there are dozens better than him.
this list is missing 2 all time greats , Heyman and Mickles. no.matter what you say they were gold in the mic and deserve their spot on the top ten. I know both will likely be featured in the next chapter , but they were their thru the late 80s and into the early 90s
Mickles?
You don't know Mickles? Come on, Brian! lol. I'm assuming he means Mick Foley?
Wrestling With Wregret Shawn Michaels I guess?
Yeah I'm torn between either Foley or Michaels. It really could be either one.
foley could still make it into the second list
Good point on Macho. I think his promos are underrated in a way. They are oddly powerful and like you say he had a style all of his own. Think I pretty much agree with the list, but yeah agree that Lawler should have made it. In fact, you could make a case that he should be in contection for the second half of the list. For a lot of his WWF/E run at least as a heel his promos have been great there too. His work in the Bret Hart feud was something else.
Nice to end that video with some Talk Talk.
Well played, Mr. Zane! :)
I find the lack of Nick Bockwinkle and Arn Anderson disturbing.
Benjamin Linzy bock who?
Cm Punk is next on list
Shawn 1999
good joke
SUPERMAN RULES BATMAN SUCKS Punk is the best on the mic since the rock so I don't know what you're on about pal
u ever listened to a shawn micheals promo
Nirvana is my life Who's your daddy, Montreal?
Punk was only good when he was allowed break kayfabe & drop a smarky pipebomb, apart from that he wasnt anything special. His SES stuff to me was his best work.
Mine will always be Jake Roberts and Roddy Piper. But then again...they're both my favorite wrestlers of all time!
flair should be on both list. some of his promos in wcw during the last 90s were legendary and the one he did on hhh where he punched his head till he started bleeding.
