    There will never be another commercial jet like the 727.......sharp fuselage lines, chiseled wings, large menacing fowler flaps on approach, great looking T-tail, LOUD triple JT8D-15's......and the way she seemed to drag low on the takeoff's, spewing the darkest smoke trail for miles on climb out till she was out of sight, and letting the whole neighborhood know she was on the takeoff roll........what an aircraft. Miss her.

      My favorite jet hands down, I lived right across from the airport in Moncton NB. My house was maybe 1000 from the runway, Every morning 727's would take off, it was my alarm bell, I loved it!

    You have to be a real aviation lover to appreciate that sound! There’s nothing like her, she was made for speed and built well. My first plane ride in 1972 was on an eastern 727 i was 2 years old. When I became a flight attendant in 2000, I wanted it to be the first plane I worked on. We got rid of them after 9/11. I never got to work on her, couldn’t believe not even on reserve. Still love her, my new love is to work the 787.. but she (727) is still my main girl..

      100% agree. I absolutely love the scream of those old JT8D engines. Cleaned up it was sleek and sexy, but you could beat the crap out of it too with that rugged landing gear.

    Just by looking at the wings you know how badass and amazing the 727 was, from tail to cockpit it was an engineering marvel at best, there's nothing like it!.

    Aww! I practically grew up on Northwest 727s. Thanks for posting. I swear I could smell the ancient coffee in the cabin air as I watched. And excellent engine sounds, indeed! Like an old lullaby.

      Those really were the good old days of aviation the 1960's and the 1970's

      Oh, yes! The intoxicating combo of coffee aroma and the engine spooling! Deep sigh...

    • @Rampage1836
      @Rampage1836 2 роки тому

      The twist, the cabin crew hid coffee bags in and around the lavs to cover up the smell.

    That, by God, is how you landed one of those birds. The joke was, "When are you going to retire?" Answer: "When I age out or get three good landings in a row on the 727, whichever comes first."

  • @glenrosarian2352

    The 727 was always my favorite. It was an absolutely magnificent-looking aircraft and an engineering marvel, with a novel wing design flap and slat system that allowed the wing surface area to increase by up to 25%.
    And the sound of the JT8D engines and the hydraulic flaps!! And what a ride.

  • @joelt4416
    @joelt4416 4 роки тому +6

    that almost sounded like full power on that turn! holy cow! The 727 wants to come down on approach! you gotta keep that power up!!!

    • @da40flyer
      @da40flyer Рік тому

      Yep and those took a long time to spool up so getting behind the power curve was definitely something to avoid.

      @j.p.3274 yup!!! It was definitely a "pilot's airplane". I would love to see some young "airbus aces" be put in the cockpit of one of these and try and hand fly it! :)

    Northwest had some interesting 727 routes from Florida in the 90s. The quintessence of a DCA landing. From the inside looking out. On Northwest to boot.

    1:37 - Classic 'Kai Tak' maneuver, hard right hand turn right above the deck. Then puts the 7-2 down on the runway like a hot potato LOL! I know, it's wet out, so better to make sure she's really in touch with pavement.

    ahhh memories; great airplane to fly; yes you had to give it a handful when speed was dropping off, very draggy, I loved the river approach into DCA

    I love that 727 sound. Kalitta Charters II is still operating a few of them in the States, and it is fun hearing/seeing them taxi past me on the DHL ramp in CVG. They have at least one that still has the old engines with the hush kits. The others have been upgraded with the -217 engines as part of the "Super 27" upgrade. They just had them upgraded with ADS-B as well, so I think they will keep them around for a few more years.

    Wow so many memories, Northwest, Delta and United on the 727... I my babies!!! A true powerhouse the 727 was, that caption said we don't got time for a miss approach or go around, were going in!!. You don't hear engines like that anymore. Many times I flew into National & over the Potomac River, Loved one this.

    Never knew NW flew from Ft Myers to DCA Non-Stop. I’ve flown several times before and after the Crash of Air Florida Flight 90 I always look down whenever flying over the 14th Street Bridge (Armand Williams Memorial Bridge)

      DCA did have a hub of sorts following the collapse of EA & PA in the early 90s. A semi-shuttle to EWR & BOS was started, as well as some good Florida operations. (At the time prior, DCA had limited service to BOS, ORD, MKE, MSP, DTW & MEM). Those cities got boosted to three (or more) times daily, and a LOT of through-plane service to the west coast via DTW & MEM.
      The hub operated for about 18 months, but was dismantled slowly - the BOS service remained, as did the hub flights & MKE - plus some of the Florida flights, which became eventually weekend only until fully removed in 2000.

      @R.D. Sussmann I was a Flight Attendant for Business Express (A former Delta Connection Northwest Airlink And American Connection Carrier) based in BOS I only worked for them for a short time October 1994-December 1994 I commuted on NW some from BOS-DCA-BOS Mostly on the 727-200 I think a few times on the A-319 I didn’t realize DCA was a small hub for them
