Awesome performance from Stephanie Trick ! First time I've heard her play; and she is dynamite !! She has a natural rhythm; love the way she keeps time with her left foot.
The cleanest tightest STRIDE I’ve ever heard. Scroll to the middle of the song after the intro. Her expression is well recognized. She can really cook the keys.😊🎉
I think it's safe to say that Steph' truly is the queen of stride. No one that I've come across comes even close. A delight to watch and listen to. Long may she reign.
That is quite sweet, and she is very good... but Hazel Scott blows her away. its no offense to Stephanie cause she is great. But Hazel is queen, like Art Tatum or Fats Waller is king. Put this recording at 1.15x though and she really does start sounding like the greats
Stephanie Trick is so tuned-in to the era in which she has both captured and mastered playing, that one keeps waiting to hear the distinctive sound of a century-old H.M.V. 78 rpm record whirring in the background, but it never occurs, and that's because she's ALIVE! Bravo! - j q t -
It is great to hear someone keeping this kind of playing alive. The classical pianists of Europe, when they came to America to play, would go to Harlem to hear Fats Waller and sit in awe. The people that played this stuff where big men with huge hands and were brimming with energy. It is surprising to hear her play it so well. Of course, she is brimming with energy. And her smile! OMG. What an amazing woman.
Actually, her hands are quite large, and the fingers are very long for her height - you can see it better in other videos. Of course, you need much more than just large hands to play like that (though it helps), and she certainly has got it - she is phenomenal!
It's about style. Ms Trick has a percussive, staccato style. She is not emulating earlier pianists. And she is keeping alive a great art form which is to be applauded
Really genius. The best version of this song anywhere has ever played. This music is really dancing and urgently call for an extension in the Stride style.
+BV Bill I play the piano at the most modest level possible, and watching Stephanie brings tears to my eyes, from admiration and a bit of regret that I didn't practice more as a kid.
+heartpursuer Right on! She's incredible. I detest the thumbs down option. If they don't like it they should turn it off and stop behaving as if anyone cares what they dislike . Only children and fatuous trolls use it.
+BV Bill Maybe UA-cam could start requiring the down-arrow crowd to post something creative they've done, so we can all sit in judgment. I'm joking. We both know they haven't done anything creative. By the way, it looks like the number of the dreaded arrows dropped by one. How is that possible?
Absolutely outstanding. Just incredible playing. Where she speeds up about two minutes into the number, is unbelievable. As an oldie, this gives me hope for the future.
Imagine just being able to stroll into a pub and sit down at the piano and knocking _this_ out - fantastic!! One of my all time favourite songs arranged beautifully as an instrumental rendition. 👍👍👍
What a mood changer and creator of listening pleasure Ms. Trick creates, especially when she shares the piano bench with Mr. Alderighi, or looks across the pianos at the likes of the great Dick Hyman! If, after reading some of the ridiculous analytic comments and comparisons to long gone jazz greats, we think she cares and is not enjoying every second of what she's doing, watch her facial expressions and her inability to keep her feet still. Nothing but superb piano playing.
James Turner Maybe if she would just keep her feet still she could rechannel and move her lips in a remarkably humorous, chatty and carefree manner while playing full tilt, just like ol Fats could...but don't hold your breath waiting for that now.
Phil Goodwin tapping your feet while playing is just an expression of how much you enjoy what you're doing, how much you feel the music. I wouldn't want her to change anything she does; Especially since, about 90% of the time, I'm just listening to her play, not watching the videos.
Just had my faith restored that maybe there's hope for great music yet, if this talented young lady is anything to go by. Truly a God given gift, just beautiful!
God-given? Come on give credit where credit is due. This beautiful young woman worked and worked and worked to develop this degree of excellence. Don't sell her short by saying it was a gift. It was a lot of tenacity, hard work and long hours on her part.
This is the first song I ever heard Stephanie play, probably about 10 years ago, and I have followed her career ever since. Still love this rendition of this great old song.
As I (hear it) & see it , the hardest thing for “Stephanie Trick” isn’t in mastering “Stride” piano. But it’s the relegation of meticulously crafting a complementary list of piano favourites. That will entertain our appetite for beautiful music played by someone spent on accentuating (the bed-jesus). Out of what already seems like flawless, and popular musical great’s.?!!!
charles cap That is true, but I don't have a piano or even a keyboard I can easily gain access to. I try to brush up a bit every time I visit home haha
Stéphanie i have a lot of your piano performances, i appréciate your discretion, simplicity, distinction, you show humility, always smile with a crazy talent, i am sur you are a good person in life
Everyone checkout Jane Vasey -with The Downchild Blues Band (and Peter Appleyard) she could play boogie woogie with the best. Stephanie Trick is wonderful, keeping an old style alive and playing so damn well.
This is actually really well played. I think I heard it first time on some video game on nintendo way back. Truly shows that good music does not care about the medium.
Terry Lynn - No video games when I first heard this in 1948. It was on 78 rpm gramophone record from 1935. (you may, at this point, wonder what on earth I'm talking about !) Played by 'dance bands' in those days, it was a very popular song and it still pops up today, played in jazz groups, etc. as a 'standard'.
Starting at 1:50, I could imagine a woman singing the lyrics of the original song, but at a really cheerful, faster paced tone. ♫ After you've gone And left me crying After you've gone There's no denying You'll feel blue You'll feel sad You'll miss the only pal you ever had There'll come a time, now don't forget it There'll come a time when you'll regret it Oh babe, think what you're doing You know my love for you will drive me to ruin After you've gone, after you've gone away ♪ Singing to match the speed, and highs and ends of the song's lyrics, to the notes of the piano, like some kind of jazz singer is too fun >_>
I’m a new follower of Stephanie (2023) this lady is phenomenal !!

❤Steph is Phenomenal. Wish I could see her play in person. I am from Singapore turning 81 soon. I can’t stop listening to her play.

Reencarnación de Fats Waller.
Superdotada.
I can still hardly believe that a young girl is bringing this wonderful music back
J’aime le jazz années 25 30, le piano et le sourire de Stéphanie trick ainsi que son grand talent
She does these great old classic tunes fantastic. Just the way they were meant to be played. She is amazing!
Holy Smoke, does that lady ever ROCK that piano!!!!

okay... 1.15x was being to harsh. She really does get into groove halfway through. Maybe 1.1x.
I think Jimin Park does this piece a bit better.
Queen if stride would be Judy Carmichael

What an absolute treasure Stephanie Trick is to the world of stride piano playing. A style of jazz piano we don't tend to hear much these days.
In my (European) country we call this left hand technique "throw bass" or similar. Is that what stride is?
@Rich Irvine Yes.
Quite wonderful....hope she's still playing...somewhere

Vélocité, rythme, virtuosité,toucher précis et magnifique sonorité.Cette jeune personne est très douée.
Bon sang!! quelle maîtrise et quel sens de rythme!! Jusqu'où cette petite pourra-t-elle donc aller???

They don't recognize real music when they hear it. They have been brainwashed into thinking the trash that's played today is music!

How about an electric 88-key piano, if you can afford it. Certainly better than nothing.
Couldn’t you slowly, patiently build up your strength and skills again. Shame to waste all you achieved in the past. Go for it!
I would swap 10 pop concert tickets for just a couple of hours at a live performance of this young lady..
What a great pianist

But they get to share their talent with the rest of us which kind of compensates. And yes she is talented, no doubt about that
I would trade a months worth of toilet paper for a thimble full of talent.
