Wow thanks for all the support so far on this video guys! Just a quick side note: I made this video because I wanted to inform people about the cons for living in this city. I am NOT trying to convince people to stop moving here. Overall this city is amazing if you ask me, and the pros far outweigh the cons. Just to add a little contrast to this video, I’ve decided to list 6 reasons why you should move to Austin: 1: Very dog friendly and animal friendly in general (check out Austin pets alive!) 2: Bike Trail on the lake just south of Downtown - amazing 10 mile outdoor trail loop 3: Great music scene: ACL, SXSW, Blues on the Green, and tons of music venues around downtown 4: Football - UT Longhorns 5: Water Activities: although we don’t have an ocean, we do have Town Lake and Lake Austin for boating and water sports 6: Greenbelt: amazing hiking trail that is great for dogs and is a fun swim at a certain time of year If you guys have any other pros to living in Austin feel free to drop them down below!
I like the video and I'm much older lol. Although I left home(Austin) 20 years ago I can think of a number of reasons to move there. Plus a couple more not to.
Houston (my hometown) has little place for geeks and freaks. Unless you graduate from Rice or live in Montrose - you have little recourse here. (And Montrose has become greatly gentrified.) As a lesbian friend of mine from Rice said, "Texas is a man's state except for Austin." So, yes, those of us from the big Texas cities found a bit of relief from the status quo.
I'm a movie lover and that was the single biggest reason I moved to Austin (over Houston). Lots of great movie theaters and film programming year round.

TRAFIC. Homeless camps under all overpasses. If you live in the city taxes are teal high. 110° In July. CALIFORNIANS. I have lived here since 1971. The Texans are friendly. CALIFORNIANS will push you down to get ahead of you in the grocery store line.
Was up in Austin 3 days ago from San Antonio. I used to go all the time in my early 20s for sixth street. But hadn't been in a while. I was shocked at all the tent cities that had popped up everywhere
Their is a huge population of homeless people but I don’t consider it a reason not to move here. They don’t bother you if you don’t bother them. If you don’t walk straight through where they are staying you are fine

I have a problem with the way the city handles the homeless. They allow them to put up camps along the road side and under bridges. It's an eye sore it looks like a third world country. The homeless used to hide. I think that might not be right. But the city could by land for them. The liberal city counsel wants to be as much like California as they can. People are comming here to get away from California.
I am watching this now in February 2021 when it is 20 degrees outside and the city is shutdown due to the hardest freeze it has ever experienced. No electric or water. It is wonderful.
He's right about the cost of living in Austin, another thing about Texas is the outrageous property taxes. For a 300k house you will pay north of $6k a year in property taxes unless you have a ag/farm exemption.

Visited Austin 15 years ago and saw how it was growing rapidly. I liked the music scene and the bats were one of my favourite things about the city. But I am sad to hear it is becoming another over-developed, over-priced techie hipster enclave.
Homeless problem started cause of the social cuts we did in the 80's, we should have the #1 educational system with those cuts and with property taxes, but we don't
CEDAR FEVER!!! Pollen allergies drove me out of Austin. It took nine years to reach a saturation point where I couldn’t take it any longer. And yes, the humidity and heat during the summer is very oppressive. It’s downright stifling! I was forced to become a slacker... spending the summer months at Deep Eddy and Barton Springs.
The median price for a house in Austin jumped up to $530k since this video was released. Houses in Pflugerville, Round Rock, Hutto, and Georgetown are also just as expensive now. 1 bedroom apartments are almost the cost of a 1500sqft one story mortgage payment.
I don't think bats are a reason not to move/live in Austin. I could care less about the bats. Reasons for not moving to Austin: High Cost of Living; Insane/Delusional Mayor and City Council; Increasingly high property taxes; Lousy Traffic; Year-around allergies including cedar; and dying local/music scene with closures of local businesses and venues.
The bats are harmless. It’s all the snakes, spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, mosquitos, & coyotes you gotta look out for. Those are everywhere and they’ll getcha.

As I replied to someone earlier, my relatives who visited California did not want to come back to Austin. Why anyone from California would want to move to Austin is beyond me.
I don’t understand why it’s so desirable.. as he said: no mountains, no coastline, super hot/humid summers, bad traffic, high/increasing rents.. California isn’t perfect, but I’ll take it any day over saving a few bucks in taxes. 🤷🏻♂️
California draws people because of the variety of terrain in which you encounter. It is absolutely stunning how you can drive to different places and the terrain will completely change. That being said, you may not enjoy a high quality of life there. In Texas, it is possible to do so especially if you making good money.
I was born and raised in Silicon Valley and I've been living here before there was a Silicon Valley and I desperately want to get out. You will definitely be saving more than a couple of bucks on taxes if you live anywhere else besides the bay area/CA. Yes it sucks I have to leave such a beautiful state behind but the politics, people, outrageous cost of living, traffic, crime, illegal immigration, fires, are all reason enough to leave. In California it's next to impossible to have a house or a future (and I made 6 fig), that is almost a given anywhere else you move.

As someone that lived in Austin for 2 years and has lived all over the United States east of the Mississippi, and I know how to read financial statements, I also feel qualified to tell you why you should not live in Austin. Austin is in financial crisis, Austin’s financial problems stem mostly from unfunded retirement obligations that have accumulated over the years. Of the $9.4 billion in retirement benefits promised, the city has not funded $2.9 billion in pension and $2.4 billion in retiree health care benefits. Furthermore, Austin did not have enough money set aside to weather the current pandemic and fluctuations in the market. The city is expected to lose some revenue as a result of the pandemic and its impossible to determine how much they will need to maintain services and benefits. Austin had $4.3 billion available to pay $6.4 billion worth of bills. Now regarding all the blather about weather and traffic. 1. Weather, its not Austin weather, its central Texas weather, you get used to it, give me a break. 2. Traffic, underrated description given in video, let me flesh out, Austinites live in flight or fight mode, so expect some idiot driving 50 miles an hour to cut in front of you from the most unexpected place...ready for it?....like the breakdown lane to your right. Enjoy that experience. But seriously folks, the financials is what you want to know about, its the health of a city, so....do you want to be on the hook for $7,600? because thats how much Austin needs to take out of your pocket to pay its bills.
@@dommyjg any city under 200k population would be start. I would also look at their financials to see if they are in debt and how much debt. That debt will come out of your backside.
1) This isn't an issue if you're renting. 2) I don't want to live sub-200k population, but that's preference. Austin is a LOT better than where my company was gonna make me move (San Fran). Haha
I’m 50 years old and was born and raised in Austin. I hate how over crowded it has become. The drivers are horrible and rude. Traffic sucks so bad! The main highways are practically parking lots during “rush hour”. The people in general are not very friendly. The violent crime rate is so much worse with the increased population. This guy is right about the critter population too. Cedar fever season is so miserable for folks like me that suffer greatly from allergies. I currently live in Washington State and hate all the rain here. Even though it makes me miss Texas I would never want to move back to Austin
Been to Austin many times, not my favorite city.. I'll stick to LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs! Texas is ok but it gets real boring real fast, California has so much more to offer!🤘🏼🎸
Building houses and apartments didn't skyrocket costs. People used to LA prices eager to buy overpriced homes in Austin drove up prices; the homes seemed cheap to them! That's a thin difference but it's more accurate.
I went to Austin back in June to visit, very nice, beautiful city. Went to look at some apartments and I was surprised at how fast the cost of living has went up in the last couple of years. With everyone moving there and lots of businesses moving there too it caused the cost of living to go up quickly than I thought it would. I do love the city and the vibe though. Austin is still a strong candidate for me to move to along with some other cities I’m considering throughout the U.S.
Lived there 20yrs ago. Had a 1bd rm apartment 3 miles away from downtown. Rode bike to work. Rent was $389. 7yrs later was paying $425, when I moved away. Austin has definitely change over time.
If you didn't already know...Austin has a saying. It is "Keep Austin Weird". My personal feeling after moving here a year ago is that they need to change their slogan to "No More Weirdos needed"...because it's WAY to crowded with them now
It sucks for people who grew up in Austin. Prices are rising because of people moving from places like California. Most natives are having to leave their home because they can’t afford it. Fucking sucks.
@@stevez5134 A secret about Austin is rents haven't increased much unless you live near downtown or another popular area. My brother lives in north Austin near Parmer Lane and his rent hasn't increased. The traffic on I-35 is very bad but if you live and work in an area where you can avoid I-35 then Austin isn't too bad. That commute hassle often hits Austinites when they must change job locations within the Austin area. In spite of Austin being a popular city it is still located in moderately priced central Texas so that outlying areas aren't priced through the roof. The traffic will get worse when a decivision is made to eventually rebuild I-35. I've read that the preferred solution is to stack mulitple decks over the existing I-35 but that would require significant closures of the existing highway. Thankfully Austin is in a low earthquake risk area. A lot of the high prices in Austin is due to people wanting to live near their jobs near downtown. Someone could buy a home east of Austin on 183, 71 or 290 and commute into downtown faster than on I-35, and there is still a lot of cows out that way. Tesla is building a plant near where those highways come close to the airport, but there isn't a huge growth pattern on 183 outisde of Austin, which is also served by the 130 tollway. If you avoid these videos and just look at a map and then do real estate queries you will find that there are affordable housing options within commuting distance of Austin. Austin is smack in the middle of central Texas. The area outside of the city is not heavilily developed compared to the Bay Area.
I just wanted to add my unsolicited memories of Austin in 1960. I spent two years (60 to 62) near Austin on a missile battery in the US Army. Austin was a small city "population wise" in 1960, around 200,00 I believe. Segregated to a degree then. A black person could not enter a theater downtown. Even though it was rumored that Lady Bird Johnson's family owned the theaters and most everything else in town. I believe in 1960 just one television station (I may be wrong) . Best Mexican food anywhere. I would walk into the Mexican (Tejanos) neighborhoods right outside downtown, and buy Tacos at a little restaurants that Anglos did not frequent, and the price was 10 cents per taco. There was a Mexican restaurant on S. Congress a little ways out from downtown. El Gallo's, that had one day a week, all you can eat for a Dollar. They lost money on us G.I's. There were chain restaurants called "Pig Stand's", that their premier pork sandwich was at 35 cents. They were drive-in restaurants with Car-hops. Of course frequented Barton Spring's park in the summer months. Trying to meet Girls. I am currently 80 years old. My how time flies.
Lived in Austin since I was 13 due to my parents job. Currently going on 31 and I gotta say, it's not the same city. The "Keep Austin Weird" vibe is gone. A lot of local businesses have closed to make way for high rise condos and bigger businesses. Quite sad. And traffic sucks even more now. Way to crowded.
Hi Zach! Very fair assessment and it is so much less expensive to live in Texas compared to where I live in California. One thing I think you should let people know about Austin is the crime rate. I think it would surprise people to know that it is twice as bad as a lot of other cities and in fact, about twice as bad as Los Angeles. It has a Neighborhood Scout crime index of 7 (L.A. is 13). Both indexes are horrible, basically at a 7 it means that 93 percent of other cities in the US are safer than Austin. I try to move to areas that are at least around 30. I lived in Flowery Branch, Georgia which had a crime index of 45 and now live in a city in Cali that has an index of 39. Just my two cents. Cheers

Most stupid point is around 4:06 where he is literally saying it would be nice if Austin has Beaches or Mountains 😂. It's really not much like Seattle in terms of politics. Sure, it's got a good number of democrats. But places like Seattle and Portland are generally more angry and intolerant, while Austin has a mix of differing opinions, which are more acceptable.
I’m from San Antonio. I used to love going up every spring break for SXSW. The free shows on Lady Bird Lake were amazing and beautiful. Now we don’t even bother making the short trip up there anymore. It’s gross and sad. I hope the once beautiful city can recover.
This. Austin is gross now. Homeless camps all over the place. Drug paraphernalia and feces on the sidewalks downtown. Garbage everywhere. And the crowd that SXSW and ACL brings are trashy now. Not at all what it used to be. And now it’s getting completely overrun by out-of-towners which is driving up the cost of living at a ridiculous rate and destroying the housing market, while also creating terrible traffic. Sad what’s happened to that once great city.

The Californacation of Austin has really changed the once nice little town and it is going to get much worse, the overbuilding is weird for a town that once told us we must preserve our land and limited water resources now it's on a binge to rezone everything and build build build in the name of increase the property tax base revenues
It's all about money, you should know this. That's all that counts. The entire place has been sacrificed. The old Austin is dead and nearly buried. In ten years it will be like San Francisco, a few, totally rich, and many, many, totally poor.

I left Austin in mid 2001 because even than the city was getting very arrogant and very expensive. Traffic was already bad and the urban infrastructure was horribly inadequate. Rents were already going through the roof, electric bills were astronomical and Austin was the most unfriendly city that I have ever spent time in. I fled to Buffalo where the cost of living is much lower, the people much friendlier, the summers are milder and traffic is not out of control. Ten years was all I could withstand Austin.
I have been living in Austin for 19 years now, Austin used to be such a great city, now we are overcrowded with the amount of people moving here due to the opening of many companies etc. I am certainly moving to another place in the near future, Austin is not longer what it used to be...😔

Dude who cares about the bats? I’ve had more issues with bats flying in the house while visiting in the Midwest than ever in Austin and I’ve lived here my entire life. You honestly have to go out of your way to look for them while going about your day to day.
I really miss a lot of things about Austin, but mostly I miss all of my friends. Luckily I can visit whenever I want. Once you turn 50 in that city (I'm 58) you basically become invisible. In fact they ask you to stay indoors on pretty days as well as after dark so you don't mess with the vibe.
I lived in and around Austin in the 90's and early 2000s. I mark the death of Austin's greatness with the closing of Southpark Meadows. Austin sucks now. It is seemingly unlivable now. LA with no beach, and a ton more guns. Good luck.

I lived in Atx from 2007-2017, the last 2 years were brutal. The traffic was insane, the crime rate was increasing, gentrification pretty much all of east side. Tons of homeless and panhandlers- $100 a month in tolls to get to work, tech companies have destroyed this city. It went from keep atx weird to completely snob ville. Sxsw was amazing 10 years ago-now it’s so mainstream- good luck with getting into any shows- unless you know someone. With all the tech companies moving there- it’s lost it’s hippie weird charm.
P.s I also had the worst allergies the last 4 years while living in Atx- cedar fever and sinus infections. Which I never experienced before- if you are experiencing that- try RoundRock honey. It kept them at bay .
I miss the old austin from 5-6 years ago. I was born in Austin and have always lived here. But so many ppl move here and also bring their politics and it’s annoying.
“Cliff things?” It’s called the Texas Hill Country. I left Austin last summer and will never go back unless it’s for an occasional visit. I miss my friends but I do not miss the insane traffic, the ridiculous cost of living, the idiotic city leaders, the homeless people everywhere, and I surely don’t miss the endless sea of 25 year-old hipsters, techies, and douchebags. Try finding a roommate if you are over 50. Every ad says “please be under 40 or close to my age (which is probably 25). Peace out ATX

Basically you can have a small home in Bay Area, but can spend a lot of time outside thanks to the weather. Your property taxes wont go up wildly like in Texas, when home prices shoots up. Your energy costs will be lower in Bay Area. But rest of xalifornia is pretty dry and hot. But I dont think the whole of Texas can beat the landscape in and around Bay Area. The beaches are great too but the water is very cold.
$1,700 for a two bedroom downtown sounds low. With all the luxury complexes taking over I’d say $2,300 a month is closer to the average. To be fair, if you go further outside of the city or go for an old apartment without amenities, they’re much cheaper. ALSO the cockroaches ARE a reason to not move to Austin if you’re from the north (aka not used to roaches) and are terrified of them 😆
Houston has too many people out here its so bad you cant find a aprtment. most people out here live in hotels . a job is a must out here .( im from houston) most of the houstonians are moving out into the smaller cities.
Couple comments. The open feel of East round rocks amazing coming from 28 years of living in the Smokey mountains. And yet we’re able to drive 25 mins and be in the hill country which has a very Californian vibe. A lot of the Californians moving here like that region as it feels very similar to what they had. Two I’m finding the heat to be worth it as I’m wearing shorts on this 77 degree December day. It’s really a trade-off. You can live in Colorado and suffer cold winters in exchange for mild summers or you can live in Austin and deal with extremely hot summers in exchange for mild fall and winter‘s. Really boils down to what extreme your more comfortable with. Also, our 2500 sqft home on East round rock was 500k. Nothings cheap out here believe that! It is rather expensive here for generally everything. Not Cali expensive but I’d say most people wanting to live comfortably here are here because of opportunities. I came for Apple and love it here but I also come from a small town feel so the massive scale of everything here is pretty cool
Austin was cool before 2014. It’s just another super capitalistic instagram influencer wanna be overpriced/overrated city now. You would’ve liked it more back then because it had a small town home-y feel but you were in the city. Less traffic, cooler, nicer more open minded people. Super laid back. Average price of a home in the inner city was 150k - 200k & in round rock it was even less than that. 90k - 150k
As a fellow austin resident it sucks to see how much the city has changed in the worst way it’s becoming mini California. What these rich people have done is raise property taxes and rent to drive out normal every day people that lived in the city. This is one of the reasons why our homeless population has skyrocketed on top of the fact that our infrastructure just can’t keep up with the huge population growth.
Austin is a great place to live...if you are a Millennial, a poser, a hipster, a townie or are under the delusional belief that you're going to be a rockstar or if you simply want to resist growing up post-college
I visited Austin early last year. I was surprised by the large number of homeless families living in tents under the freeway. Unfortunately, people kept approaching us for a handout. I wondered if TX has little or no social services.
Austin is a liberal city. Homeless ppl are offered shelters and gov subsidized necessities but if they prefer to live on the street and taking your handouts as additional income, there’s nothing the government can do about it
Last year I was a waitress and only made $15k. Tried getting food stamps for me and my son and got denied. Only my son got approved got Medicaid. All cause I “made too much.” I made more money living in California and got approved for both snap and medical.

I’ve been liking Austin less and less over the years Rent for apartments has gone up, There is Always condos being built on a just about every empty space possible making the city overall seem crowded,Homeless pretty much took over downtown. The Next year I’ll be moving to Taylor Tx Or something similar just to get away from all of this.

Austin is close enough to San Antonio(home)to say that the HEAT/COLD should be a BIG deterrent for potential out of state interest.I just don't get the high cost of living there.SO uncomfortable that you can't even go outside in the summer,and a LOT of the winter has been C-O-L-D!!Caifornians are in for a SHOCK!!Weather alone.However!Wife&I agree that if we have a major financial windfall,we're moving to CALIFORNIA!😳.SO tired of Roasting/Sweating&Freezing!
I stayed for two weeks at Home2Suite hotel, Burnett Rd and I absolutely loved it. The best location I went to was lake Travis. Amazing spot. Love from Cairo Egypt.
1) It’s not as humid as anywhere east of us. I lived in FL for 26 years. Humid as hell! Same with Washington DC. Just as humid as FL. 2) Traffic?? Have you been on I-4 in Orlando or I-95 in VA going to DC? How about the 405 in California? At least the traffic moves here. Try sitting in Traffic on I-95 from Fredericksburg VA to DC for 2-3 hours during rush hour when it’s normally an hours drive. I will agree with everything else. I moved here almost 5 yrs ago from the DC area and I love it here!
I really do wish we did have mountains in Austin. Would be a perfect way to escape the heat in the summer and great hiking. The hills here are ok but a bit underwhelming.
Yep having no mountains near by the is the worst part about Austin. I live here and have to travel to Colorado quite a bit to get my mountain fix. Might move there soon.
Bats don’t bother human beings. Instead of listing “bats” on the reasons for not moving to Austin, how about “homeless camps” which are eye-sores and potential danger for social issues. We’ve had higher crime (including murder) reports recently due to the influx of such population.
Now in Summer 2021, there are bidding wars going on for homes. Even if you get out away from Austin in the surrounding cities, it's just as bad if not worse. A 200K home a couple of years or even a year ago could sell for 400-500K now. Those home values will kill you in property taxes in both Travis and Williamson counties. The time for getting in was over a year ago. Look elsewhere in TX if you want to live in this state but that will be difficult because Austin is where the good jobs are.

(Pop up: Most of the time.)” Actually Austin is in cold hardiness zone 8b with lows that can get down to 15-20F. I see this was unloaded before the Texas “Snowpocalypse” that dumped ice/snow and temperatures down to 0°F in February 2021. We get winter lows in the 20s every year and snow/ice every few years. Where are you actually from? 🤔

Just a quick side note: I made this video because I wanted to inform people about the cons for living in this city. I am NOT trying to convince people to stop moving here. Overall this city is amazing if you ask me, and the pros far outweigh the cons.
Just to add a little contrast to this video, I’ve decided to list 6 reasons why you should move to Austin:
1: Very dog friendly and animal friendly in general (check out Austin pets alive!)
2: Bike Trail on the lake just south of Downtown - amazing 10 mile outdoor trail loop
3: Great music scene: ACL, SXSW, Blues on the Green, and tons of music venues around downtown
4: Football - UT Longhorns
5: Water Activities: although we don’t have an ocean, we do have Town Lake and Lake Austin for boating and water sports
6: Greenbelt: amazing hiking trail that is great for dogs and is a fun swim at a certain time of year

I like the video and I'm much older lol. Although I left home(Austin) 20 years ago I can think of a number of reasons to move there. Plus a couple more not to.
Houston (my hometown) has little place for geeks and freaks.
Unless you graduate from Rice or live in Montrose - you have little recourse here.
(And Montrose has become greatly gentrified.)
As a lesbian friend of mine from Rice said,
"Texas is a man's state except for Austin."
So, yes, those of us from the big Texas cities found a bit of relief from the status quo.
I'm a movie lover and that was the single biggest reason I moved to Austin (over Houston). Lots of great movie theaters and film programming year round.

Was up in Austin 3 days ago from San Antonio. I used to go all the time in my early 20s for sixth street. But hadn't been in a while. I was shocked at all the tent cities that had popped up everywhere

I have a problem with the way the city handles the homeless. They allow them to put up camps along the road side and under bridges. It's an eye sore it looks like a third world country. The homeless used to hide. I think that might not be right. But the city could by land for them. The liberal city counsel wants to be as much like California as they can. People are comming here to get away from California.
I am watching this now in February 2021 when it is 20 degrees outside and the city is shutdown due to the hardest freeze it has ever experienced. No electric or water. It is wonderful.
Everyone is moving here, I am a native and desperate to get the hell out! The original city I knew is gone forever.

That’s why I relocated to the valley. It’s still changing, but at a much, much more manageable pace.
Another reason:
• Lack of regulation
• Lack of Public Transportation
• State’ infrastructure is unprepared for all seasons
At the end of the day the governor of Texas is awful and I would never move there even if someone paid me.

He's right about the cost of living in Austin, another thing about Texas is the outrageous property taxes. For a 300k house you will pay north of $6k a year in property taxes unless you have a ag/farm exemption.
Austin is all about money they charge you for everything.

my aunt was paying 15,000 in property taxes a year in sugarland texas. in the @59 and university street area

Visited Austin 15 years ago and saw how it was growing rapidly. I liked the music scene and the bats were one of my favourite things about the city. But I am sad to hear it is becoming another over-developed, over-priced techie hipster enclave.

CEDAR FEVER!!! Pollen allergies drove me out of Austin. It took nine years to reach a saturation point where I couldn’t take it any longer. And yes, the humidity and heat during the summer is very oppressive. It’s downright stifling! I was forced to become a slacker... spending the summer months at Deep Eddy and Barton Springs.
The median price for a house in Austin jumped up to $530k since this video was released. Houses in Pflugerville, Round Rock, Hutto, and Georgetown are also just as expensive now. 1 bedroom apartments are almost the cost of a 1500sqft one story mortgage payment.
I live in San Antonio so it’s not that different in terms of the things u listed, but the price of Austin is really high
I don't think bats are a reason not to move/live in Austin. I could care less about the bats. Reasons for not moving to Austin: High Cost of Living; Insane/Delusional Mayor and City Council; Increasingly high property taxes; Lousy Traffic; Year-around allergies including cedar; and dying local/music scene with closures of local businesses and venues.

The bats are harmless. It’s all the snakes, spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, mosquitos, & coyotes you gotta look out for. Those are everywhere and they’ll getcha.

As I replied to someone earlier, my relatives who visited California did not want to come back to Austin. Why anyone from California would want to move to Austin is beyond me.
I don’t understand why it’s so desirable.. as he said: no mountains, no coastline, super hot/humid summers, bad traffic, high/increasing rents.. California isn’t perfect, but I’ll take it any day over saving a few bucks in taxes. 🤷🏻♂️
Good Stay there
California draws people because of the variety of terrain in which you encounter. It is absolutely stunning how you can drive to different places and the terrain will completely change. That being said, you may not enjoy a high quality of life there. In Texas, it is possible to do so especially if you making good money.

I was born and raised in Silicon Valley and I've been living here before there was a Silicon Valley and I desperately want to get out. You will definitely be saving more than a couple of bucks on taxes if you live anywhere else besides the bay area/CA. Yes it sucks I have to leave such a beautiful state behind but the politics, people, outrageous cost of living, traffic, crime, illegal immigration, fires, are all reason enough to leave. In California it's next to impossible to have a house or a future (and I made 6 fig), that is almost a given anywhere else you move.
If you want both unbearable summer heat and mountains, you'd love Arizona.

As someone that lived in Austin for 2 years and has lived all over the United States east of the Mississippi, and I know how to read financial statements, I also feel qualified to tell you why you should not live in Austin. Austin is in financial crisis, Austin’s financial problems stem mostly from unfunded retirement obligations that have accumulated over the years. Of the $9.4 billion in retirement benefits promised, the city has not funded $2.9 billion in pension and $2.4 billion in retiree health care benefits. Furthermore, Austin did not have enough money set aside to weather the current pandemic and fluctuations in the market. The city is expected to lose some revenue as a result of the pandemic and its impossible to determine how much they will need to maintain services and benefits. Austin had $4.3 billion available to pay $6.4 billion worth of bills. Now regarding all the blather about weather and traffic. 1. Weather, its not Austin weather, its central Texas weather, you get used to it, give me a break. 2. Traffic, underrated description given in video, let me flesh out, Austinites live in flight or fight mode, so expect some idiot driving 50 miles an hour to cut in front of you from the most unexpected place...ready for it?....like the breakdown lane to your right. Enjoy that experience. But seriously folks, the financials is what you want to know about, its the health of a city, so....do you want to be on the hook for $7,600? because thats how much Austin needs to take out of your pocket to pay its bills.

@@dommyjg any city under 200k population would be start. I would also look at their financials to see if they are in debt and how much debt. That debt will come out of your backside.
1) This isn't an issue if you're renting. 2) I don't want to live sub-200k population, but that's preference. Austin is a LOT better than where my company was gonna make me move (San Fran). Haha

I’m 50 years old and was born and raised in Austin. I hate how over crowded it has become. The drivers are horrible and rude. Traffic sucks so bad! The main highways are practically parking lots during “rush hour”. The people in general are not very friendly. The violent crime rate is so much worse with the increased population. This guy is right about the critter population too. Cedar fever season is so miserable for folks like me that suffer greatly from allergies. I currently live in Washington State and hate all the rain here. Even though it makes me miss Texas I would never want to move back to Austin

Building houses and apartments didn't skyrocket costs. People used to LA prices eager to buy overpriced homes in Austin drove up prices; the homes seemed cheap to them! That's a thin difference but it's more accurate.

I went to Austin back in June to visit, very nice, beautiful city. Went to look at some apartments and I was surprised at how fast the cost of living has went up in the last couple of years. With everyone moving there and lots of businesses moving there too it caused the cost of living to go up quickly than I thought it would. I do love the city and the vibe though. Austin is still a strong candidate for me to move to along with some other cities I’m considering throughout the U.S.
Austin is overrated AF, can't wait to make bank on my house and move.

Had a 1bd rm apartment 3 miles away from downtown. Rode bike to work. Rent was $389. 7yrs later was paying $425, when I moved away. Austin has definitely change over time.

@@stevez5134 A secret about Austin is rents haven't increased much unless you live near downtown or another popular area. My brother lives in north Austin near Parmer Lane and his rent hasn't increased. The traffic on I-35 is very bad but if you live and work in an area where you can avoid I-35 then Austin isn't too bad. That commute hassle often hits Austinites when they must change job locations within the Austin area. In spite of Austin being a popular city it is still located in moderately priced central Texas so that outlying areas aren't priced through the roof. The traffic will get worse when a decivision is made to eventually rebuild I-35. I've read that the preferred solution is to stack mulitple decks over the existing I-35 but that would require significant closures of the existing highway. Thankfully Austin is in a low earthquake risk area. A lot of the high prices in Austin is due to people wanting to live near their jobs near downtown. Someone could buy a home east of Austin on 183, 71 or 290 and commute into downtown faster than on I-35, and there is still a lot of cows out that way. Tesla is building a plant near where those highways come close to the airport, but there isn't a huge growth pattern on 183 outisde of Austin, which is also served by the 130 tollway. If you avoid these videos and just look at a map and then do real estate queries you will find that there are affordable housing options within commuting distance of Austin. Austin is smack in the middle of central Texas. The area outside of the city is not heavilily developed compared to the Bay Area.

I just wanted to add my unsolicited memories of Austin in 1960.
I spent two years (60 to 62) near Austin on a missile battery in the US Army. Austin was a small city "population wise" in 1960, around 200,00 I believe.
Segregated to a degree then. A black person could not enter a theater downtown. Even though it was rumored that Lady Bird Johnson's family owned the theaters and most everything else in town.
I believe in 1960 just one television station (I may be wrong) . Best Mexican food anywhere. I would walk into the Mexican (Tejanos) neighborhoods right outside downtown, and buy Tacos at a little restaurants that Anglos did not frequent, and the price was 10 cents per taco.
There was a Mexican restaurant on S. Congress a little ways out from downtown. El Gallo's, that had one day a week, all you can eat for a Dollar. They lost money on us G.I's.
There were chain restaurants called "Pig Stand's", that their premier pork sandwich was at 35 cents. They were drive-in restaurants with Car-hops.
Of course frequented Barton Spring's park in the summer months. Trying to meet Girls. I am currently 80 years old. My how time flies.

Lived in Austin since I was 13 due to my parents job. Currently going on 31 and I gotta say, it's not the same city. The "Keep Austin Weird" vibe is gone. A lot of local businesses have closed to make way for high rise condos and bigger businesses. Quite sad. And traffic sucks even more now. Way to crowded.
Hi Zach! Very fair assessment and it is so much less expensive to live in Texas compared to where I live in California. One thing I think you should let people know about Austin is the crime rate. I think it would surprise people to know that it is twice as bad as a lot of other cities and in fact, about twice as bad as Los Angeles. It has a Neighborhood Scout crime index of 7 (L.A. is 13). Both indexes are horrible, basically at a 7 it means that 93 percent of other cities in the US are safer than Austin. I try to move to areas that are at least around 30. I lived in Flowery Branch, Georgia which had a crime index of 45 and now live in a city in Cali that has an index of 39. Just my two cents. Cheers
I am really surprised that he made an entire video of mentioning kiddish points of why to not come to Austin. Most stupid point is around 4:06 where he is literally saying it would be nice if Austin has Beaches or Mountains 😂. It's really not much like Seattle in terms of politics. Sure, it's got a good number of democrats. But places like Seattle and Portland are generally more angry and intolerant, while Austin has a mix of differing opinions, which are more acceptable.

I’m from San Antonio. I used to love going up every spring break for SXSW. The free shows on Lady Bird Lake were amazing and beautiful. Now we don’t even bother making the short trip up there anymore. It’s gross and sad. I hope the once beautiful city can recover.
This. Austin is gross now. Homeless camps all over the place. Drug paraphernalia and feces on the sidewalks downtown. Garbage everywhere. And the crowd that SXSW and ACL brings are trashy now. Not at all what it used to be. And now it’s getting completely overrun by out-of-towners which is driving up the cost of living at a ridiculous rate and destroying the housing market, while also creating terrible traffic. Sad what’s happened to that once great city.

The Californacation of Austin has really changed the once nice little town and it is going to get much worse, the overbuilding is weird for a town that once told us we must preserve our land and limited water resources now it's on a binge to rezone everything and build build build in the name of increase the property tax base revenues

I left Austin in mid 2001 because even than the city was getting very arrogant and very expensive. Traffic was already bad and the urban infrastructure was horribly inadequate. Rents were already going through the roof, electric bills were astronomical and Austin was the most unfriendly city that I have ever spent time in. I fled to Buffalo where the cost of living is much lower, the people much friendlier, the summers are milder and traffic is not out of control. Ten years was all I could withstand Austin.
The 90’s were Austin’s best years.

I have been living in Austin for 19 years now, Austin used to be such a great city, now we are overcrowded with the amount of people moving here due to the opening of many companies etc. I am certainly moving to another place in the near future, Austin is not longer what it used to be...😔

I really miss a lot of things about Austin, but mostly I miss all of my friends. Luckily I can visit whenever I want. Once you turn 50 in that city (I'm 58) you basically become invisible. In fact they ask you to stay indoors on pretty days as well as after dark so you don't mess with the vibe.
I lived in and around Austin in the 90's and early 2000s. I mark the death of Austin's greatness with the closing of Southpark Meadows. Austin sucks now. It is seemingly unlivable now. LA with no beach, and a ton more guns. Good luck.

I lived in Atx from 2007-2017, the last 2 years were brutal.
The traffic was insane, the crime rate was increasing, gentrification pretty much all of east side.
Tons of homeless and panhandlers- $100 a month in tolls to get to work, tech companies have destroyed this city.
It went from keep atx weird to completely snob ville.
Sxsw was amazing 10 years ago-now it’s so mainstream- good luck with getting into any shows- unless you know someone.
With all the tech companies moving there- it’s lost it’s hippie weird charm.
P.s I also had the worst allergies the last 4 years while living in Atx- cedar fever and sinus infections.
Which I never experienced before- if you are experiencing that- try RoundRock honey. It kept them at bay .

I miss the old austin from 5-6 years ago. I was born in Austin and have always lived here. But so many ppl move here and also bring their politics and it’s annoying.

“Cliff things?” It’s called the Texas Hill Country. I left Austin last summer and will never go back unless it’s for an occasional visit. I miss my friends but I do not miss the insane traffic, the ridiculous cost of living, the idiotic city leaders, the homeless people everywhere, and I surely don’t miss the endless sea of 25 year-old hipsters, techies, and douchebags. Try finding a roommate if you are over 50. Every ad says “please be under 40 or close to my age (which is probably 25). Peace out ATX

Basically you can have a small home in Bay Area, but can spend a lot of time outside thanks to the weather. Your property taxes wont go up wildly like in Texas, when home prices shoots up.
Your energy costs will be lower in Bay Area. But rest of xalifornia is pretty dry and hot.
But I dont think the whole of Texas can beat the landscape in and around Bay Area. The beaches are great too but the water is very cold.
$1,700 for a two bedroom downtown sounds low. With all the luxury complexes taking over I’d say $2,300 a month is closer to the average. To be fair, if you go further outside of the city or go for an old apartment without amenities, they’re much cheaper.
ALSO the cockroaches ARE a reason to not move to Austin if you’re from the north (aka not used to roaches) and are terrified of them 😆

Houston has too many people out here its so bad you cant find a aprtment. most people out here live in hotels . a job is a must out here .( im from houston) most of the houstonians are moving out into the smaller cities.

Couple comments. The open feel of East round rocks amazing coming from 28 years of living in the Smokey mountains. And yet we’re able to drive 25 mins and be in the hill country which has a very Californian vibe. A lot of the Californians moving here like that region as it feels very similar to what they had. Two I’m finding the heat to be worth it as I’m wearing shorts on this 77 degree December day. It’s really a trade-off. You can live in Colorado and suffer cold winters in exchange for mild summers or you can live in Austin and deal with extremely hot summers in exchange for mild fall and winter‘s. Really boils down to what extreme your more comfortable with. Also, our 2500 sqft home on East round rock was 500k. Nothings cheap out here believe that! It is rather expensive here for generally everything. Not Cali expensive but I’d say most people wanting to live comfortably here are here because of opportunities. I came for Apple and love it here but I also come from a small town feel so the massive scale of everything here is pretty cool
Austin was cool before 2014. It’s just another super capitalistic instagram influencer wanna be overpriced/overrated city now. You would’ve liked it more back then because it had a small town home-y feel but you were in the city. Less traffic, cooler, nicer more open minded people. Super laid back. Average price of a home in the inner city was 150k - 200k & in round rock it was even less than that. 90k - 150k
As a fellow austin resident it sucks to see how much the city has changed in the worst way it’s becoming mini California. What these rich people have done is raise property taxes and rent to drive out normal every day people that lived in the city. This is one of the reasons why our homeless population has skyrocketed on top of the fact that our infrastructure just can’t keep up with the huge population growth.
Austin is a great place to live...if you are a Millennial, a poser, a hipster, a townie or are under the delusional belief that you're going to be a rockstar or if you simply want to resist growing up post-college

Grew up in Austin in the 80s and 90s. Such a great town, time of my life. It's unrecognizable now and I don't like being back there.
I visited Austin early last year. I was surprised by the large number of homeless families living in tents under the freeway. Unfortunately, people kept approaching us for a handout. I wondered if TX has little or no social services.

Austin is a liberal city. Homeless ppl are offered shelters and gov subsidized necessities but if they prefer to live on the street and taking your handouts as additional income, there’s nothing the government can do about it
Last year I was a waitress and only made $15k. Tried getting food stamps for me and my son and got denied. Only my son got approved got Medicaid. All cause I “made too much.” I made more money living in California and got approved for both snap and medical.

I’ve been liking Austin less and less over the years Rent for apartments has gone up, There is Always condos being built on a just about every empty space possible making the city overall seem crowded,Homeless pretty much took over downtown. The Next year I’ll be moving to Taylor Tx Or something similar just to get away from all of this.

Austin is close enough to San Antonio(home)to say that the HEAT/COLD should be a BIG deterrent for potential out of state interest.I just don't get the high cost of living there.SO uncomfortable that you can't even go outside in the summer,and a LOT of the winter has been C-O-L-D!!Caifornians are in for a SHOCK!!Weather alone.However!Wife&I agree that if we have a major financial windfall,we're moving to CALIFORNIA!😳.SO tired of Roasting/Sweating&Freezing!
I stayed for two weeks at Home2Suite hotel, Burnett Rd and I absolutely loved it.

1) It’s not as humid as anywhere east of us. I lived in FL for 26 years. Humid as hell! Same with Washington DC. Just as humid as FL.
2) Traffic?? Have you been on I-4 in Orlando or I-95 in VA going to DC? How about the 405 in California? At least the traffic moves here. Try sitting in Traffic on I-95 from Fredericksburg VA to DC for 2-3 hours during rush hour when it’s normally an hours drive.
I will agree with everything else. I moved here almost 5 yrs ago from the DC area and I love it here!

I really do wish we did have mountains in Austin. Would be a perfect way to escape the heat in the summer and great hiking. The hills here are ok but a bit underwhelming.

Bats don’t bother human beings. Instead of listing “bats” on the reasons for not moving to Austin, how about “homeless camps” which are eye-sores and potential danger for social issues. We’ve had higher crime (including murder) reports recently due to the influx of such population.
And the Allergies are horrible.
My first one bedroom apt was close to downtown in 88 was 230 per month with all bills paid.
Now in Summer 2021, there are bidding wars going on for homes. Even if you get out away from Austin in the surrounding cities, it's just as bad if not worse. A 200K home a couple of years or even a year ago could sell for 400-500K now. Those home values will kill you in property taxes in both Travis and Williamson counties. The time for getting in was over a year ago. Look elsewhere in TX if you want to live in this state but that will be difficult because Austin is where the good jobs are.

Actually Austin is in cold hardiness zone 8b with lows that can get down to 15-20F. I see this was unloaded before the Texas “Snowpocalypse” that dumped ice/snow and temperatures down to 0°F in February 2021. We get winter lows in the 20s every year and snow/ice every few years. Where are you actually from? 🤔
