- Lantern Festival before Loy Krathong. Yee Peng Festival in Chiang Mai (sometimes written as 'Yi Peng') is celebrated on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month ever year, which normally means mid-way through November, but this can vary.
In Chiang Mai, the ancient capital of the former Lanna Kingdom, Loi Krathong coincides with the Lanna (northern Thai) festival known as 'Yi Peng' where a multitude of Lanna-style sky lanterns adorned with good luck wishes and prayer are released into the sky.

The biggest place they release is in Mae Jo University and around their local. This was the place we went.

Hi! I'm going to Chiang Mai for this event and I have some questions about it. I just googled about Yipeng and the massive release is held in Maejo university. But people said that tickets required to enter it. Is it true? If then, how did you get the ticket(I guess you got tickets, so you could go into the university) and how much did you pay for it?
Hi, in the previous years, there were two lantern releases in Maejo, one for the locals which is free, and one for tourists in the university, which requires tickets, the cheapest price of which is US$100 and can be more depend on the demands.
A friend got the tickets at the local hotel, we booked the hotel 6 months in advance!! The hotel confirms the purchase via email, and they deliver the tickets to your hotel in Chiang Mai. You used to be able to get the ticket at the official website for the event and from one of the Chiang Mai hotels which sells tickets online. However, the official site, www.yeepenglanna.com/, doesn’t seem to be working anymore. 2016 tickets were also sold with a tour package, which includes transportation to the event. Alternatively, you can search on Google for Yee Peng packages in Chiang Mai. Some travel agencies offer tour packages which include tickets for the lantern festival.
It is possible that most ticket are already sold out months before the event, but I heard some able to score the remaining tickets online weeks before the event. Good luck!
If you cannot get the ticket, attend the local one, it's still as good! You don't need to fuzz about the costly ticket. You won't be disappointed. : )
And which one did you attend? Local one or one for tourists? I mean I just wanna know the venue where you recorded the video on your UA-cam channel.
