My dad actually won a lot at blackjack in Vegas. The casino did get suspicious that they changed dealers, cards, made him go to a different table and kept a close eye on him. Thing is my dad wasn't counting cards because he doesn't know how, he was just having a really good night.
Traviiis48 it's not illegal but several casinos see it as cheating. And after winning a certain amount of money, you will be escorted to cash out and then the nearest exit. Casinos also have several systems in place to counteract card counters.
Not entirely true. Casinos will not immediately make counters cash out and force them to leave. Casinos want your money and they would prefer if costumers kept playing their "fair" games. But to make it "fair" for the casino, common stipulation after they detect counting would be to allow these players to continue playing, but not be able to change their bets. Either that or encourage them to try other types of games (where counting is obsolete).
stupidichigo99 From the casinos I have worked in and have played in, what I stated previously is the major consensus. The only other difference I've seen is that casino operations allow the counter to stay in order to win their money back, or if said counter starts tipping, which puts the casino in a very difficult spot.
stupidichigo99 Atlantic City cannot force players to leave a casino due to some court ruling that happened a long time ago. Of course the Blackjack rules there are poor.
The funny thing about card counting is, if someone else is card counting with you at a table (including a dealer or pit boss), then you both know that you're both card counting. It's a crazy phenomenon.
Anyone who’s been to casinos realizes how loud it is in there, and how fast the dealers move cards, and how much pressure when you have your money on the line.. anyone who pulls this off successfully is an extremely cool cucumber

What makes it hard seems not to be the actual counting, but to make it appear like you're not counting. This means not moving your lips at all, barely moving your eyes and looking at the peripherals of your vision, all while constantly doing addition/subtraction and division on the fly.
The counting really even isn't the issue.. it's the bets you make when you believe you have the advantage. The second you begin to bet weirdly you will have every pitboss with half a brain watching you.. (they're all trained heavily when it comes to spotting counters) along with every camera and dealer. You can make all the weird faces you want while counting.. it's the weird bets that catch their attention.
Because you can get a 1% edge if you play perfectly and bet in right spots and ACTUALLY get the cards you need.. (It's still a game of chance regardless of the count). In other words.. With that $1,000 bank roll... you could make a whole $10 over a 2 hour session. Of course all this matters if you're actually able to find a casino that DOESN'T have auto shufflers or pitbosses watching your every move after making a weird $300 bet when you've been betting $25/$50 for an hour straight... i.e.. It's simply not viable anymore and tbh.. never really was. Unless you had a huge bankroll and played in groups.. 1% never really added up otherwise.

I sort of counted cards when I used to play blackjack, but I didn't count every single card with a point system. I just paid attention to trends. For example if there was a lot of low cards played, I knew the odds of a face card coming up increased, which gave me insight on how to bet. So I'd bet low to start every deck and just play normal, while watching for patterns, and then increase my bets accordingly. It was pretty successful for me, but would anger the other players at the table because I'd often play unconventional towards the end of the deck. For instance, say I had a 14 and the dealer had a 5 showing, the conventional method tells you to stay and let the dealer bust. But because I was paying attention to the high-low cards already played, and knew there was way more face cards played than low ones, I knew there was a bunch of low cards left in the deck. And thus if I didn't hit, the dealer was gonna get the low cards and beat me. So I'd hit and end up with like 19-20 and win, but it messed up everyone else at the table who were playing conventionally lol.
@@ysav3236 They always shuffled decks by machine at the casinos I played. Usually was 6-8 decks iirc. Shuffling doesn't really have any effect, as you just restart your process after every shuffling. You bet low at the beginning, then as you gather info of which cards have already been played, you can start betting more towards the end of the round. Then do the same process again after they shuffle.
Thank you for the SUPER simplified version, I'm not great at maths (yet, gotta start learning again lmao) and looking at the values is a lot easier than trying to count the total amount of + or -.
This reminded me those bits on "The Big Short" where they had celebrities explaining Wall Street's inner works on a "water downed version" everything sounded quasi rational but in reality felt like listening to another language.
@@tsurin-2160 Of course. Without card counting (but otherwise playing the ideal strategy), you will - at average in the long run - lose something like 1% of the money you bet. With card counting, you will in the long run in the long run win 1% instead. (The exact numbers depend on the actual game rules.) The card counting gives you an idea of the approximate composition of the remaining cards in the deck; that is, whether the cards are in your or the house's favor (and so whether to bet high, or else to bet low or leave the table), plus it allows you to vary the strategy (for example, if the count is high - that is, there are a significant number of tens and aces left in the deck - it is more advantageous to double even when basic strategy tells you that you shouldn't do that). But no matter what, you don't know what the next card will be (that is, unless the dealer accidentally exposes it).
It takes a lot of practice...but there’s some pitfalls involved with counting. As Alan in the Hangover said, it helps if you have a spotter like in the movie 21. There is actually very little time when the true count is really in your favor. So you may spend hours trudging through negative counts or mostly even counts. Sometimes your deck will start off very high card heavy. Of course you have no way of knowing that, you’ve won most of your bets, but youve been min betting and now the deck is halfway done and the running count is -18. You also have to keep track of everything while small chatting, dealing with cocktail waitresses talking to you, and making the right moves. Ive been so caught up in my count that ive made the wrong move or added wrong on my total and stood when I should’ve hit.
Watching this video in hoping to get a better grasp of the game, expecting to get sufficient skills to at least boast to friends, but in the end I still get nothing but an entertaining magic performance
If so, then this movie is for you. www.imdb.com/title/tt0478087/ I think it is more about how to do it but not how it works, it all comes down to math.
Counting cards only ever gives you a marginal advantage over the house. It will never be flashy or impressive even if you do pull it off. The only time your friends will be impressed is when you spend an entire weekend at the blackjack tables and end up a couple hundred up and maybe get kicked out of the casino.
I bet all of the Las Vegas casinos have a picture of him in the security surveillance rooms ready to give him the boot as soon as he enters their hotels 😂😂😂
He told me one time he picked up a friend at the airport and they drove over to MGM for breakfast. As they were walking in from the parking garage he heard a voice call out from behind: "Hey Mike! I hope you don't plan on playing today." Though we played together for about 6 hours at Mandalay Bay and Wynn no problems - mainly because he wasn't playing for serious money.
slot machines are standard on a 60/40 payout. so you always lose there. for every dollar you put it in pays out 40 cents. so slot machines are a sure way to get money into the casino.
This is really something most people can grasp pretty decently if you actually spend a few hours on it one day (assuming you can count, add , & subtract). I’m not just saying this. It seems a lot more complicated than it is. I found this guy has done a better job than anyone explaining quickly how it’s done. I encourage anyone to read into it more. It is NOT illegal to use at a casino either. The worst that can happen is they back you off and ask/tell you to leave.
Ok, so at 4:44 he says running count is 17, then the next hand goes (6 and 7 for +1; 8 and 6 for +2; 7 and 9 for +2; 4 and 10 for +2; 2, 2, 4, and Ace for +4) for a total of +4, then he raises it to 23. Shouldn't it be 21?
Yes... I use this method all the time in the casinos and it works. However I count the aces and 2's as zero's. Which in turn makes things a bit easier. I win most of the time, but it can be a real grind when the count stays around zero. Not to mention the swings in the count can put you way ahead or way behind real fast. You just got to be ready for it if and when it happens.
I agree most of the time it can be a real grind. Since the true count is less than or equal to +1 about 70% of the time, you're either betting minimum or Wonging out often. Only about 0.5% of the time do you reach that max bet count when it get really interesting and you win or lose a lot in just a couple minutes.
Remember that casinos are private places aka they can kick you out whenever they want. If you’re obvious and they understand you are using this strategy, you’re out. I even heard that some memory champions are not allowed in because they can count the cards that have come out (which is also why they use more then 1 deck for each play).
I try to stick to a middle ground, more "vague" version of this (both because I suck at quick maths and also so I don't get kicked out for card counting and can still enjoy my time at the tables instead of stuck in my head), by just trying to keep track of if I've seen a 'more than average' amount of high or low cards. If you get one or two rounds with a lot of face and high cards, expect the next round or the round after to be mostly low cards. Definitely not foolproof or consistently accurate but its better than nothing.
Back in the late 80s I had a friend name Charlie while living in LA. He found out his dad in Ohio died and that he had an Autistic brother. He flew out there to meet him and found out he was good at counting cards. They went to Vegas to try his luck and sure enough won $80k before getting kicked out of the Casino. I think his brother's name was Raymond.
So, at minute 5 when the running count was on 17, first hand was a +1, next hand was also a +1 and the next two hands were zero. The dealer's cards were +1,+1,+1 and the final card A for ,-1. How do you get 23 running count?
Absolutely.. And learn and understand that basic strategy will change depending on the table you are playing.. Whether single deck double deck or multiple deck shoes. Then will again also vary by table rules such as stand on all 17s stand on hard 17s surrender no surrender double after split no double after split etc etc
a simple way to beat blackjack is if you lose, just double your bet. Keep doing that until you win again and win back what you lost. Statistically, its hard to lose more than 6 hands in a row.
I think you need to know how many decks the dealer mix in the bunch, and reset your count once you see the dealer reshuffles or bring out a new group of cards.
I also went to MIT about 15 years before the MIT blackjack Team. I was a physics major. I first did this with another physics major, my study partner at MIT All he says here is true but he has neglected to tell you about the tables that tell you whether to split pairs, hit or stand, double down, soft double, etc based on what the true count is. "Your total" on the x-axis vs "dealer's Upcard" on the y-axis and every entry must be memorized for everything that can happen in a game of blackjack. I don't know why he neglected to tell you this incredibly important part of this. You will break even, even if you vary your bets, if you don't memorize these tables and apply them accurately, with one caveat. If you bet wildly meaning bet a lot when the count is in your favor, you can win some with his strategy of not using the tables. (Please respond WIRED.) There is a whole chapter devoted to counting cards in Reno and Las Vegas in my book "Striking It Rich: Golf in the Kingdom with Generals, Patients, and Pros". I ended up going to medical school and became a surgeon . I used the $250,000 I made counting cards to pay back my MIT loans and to pay for medical school. In case you're wondering, yes, Ben Mezrich stole my story for the movie "21".
@@dr.reidsheftalltruthinscie2007 and how did he accesse your story? man you should have copyrighted it instantly it's an insane life story. Do you think card counting is still viable nowadays?
Keeping running/true count using Hi-Lo seems straight forward enough, it's the basic strategy of the game that melts me; can't remember all those plays.
Ah it's not too bad after some practice dude, I used to think the same as you! It's actually pretty simple if you practice every day for an hour or so. This is what I did and I became quite profitable.
There are also deviations that come into play dependent on where the true count is. For the most part this is all you need to put the advantage in your favor but there are a few deviations that can increase your profit margins as well.
Gary Lu If a person has to ask what the count is, obviously that person isn't a card counter. Any true card counter knows what the count is at all times and wouldn't need to ever ask.
@@jamiemalokas3693 Actually, sometimes the very same dealers are also counting cards, or at least know the very basics of it. So they can easily detect any player who is trying to use this method against the casino, and next inform the pit boss.
The only reason I'm here, I saw the film and decided the dealer doesn't give anyone enough time to count cards. This vid didn't help. I'll stick to the lotteries.
What people don't understand about counting cards is that it makes you lose little when you lose and gain more when you win. But even if the count is advantageous to the player you may still lose anyway.
Keep in mind everyone, that basic strategy is not as simple as it seems. It requires quite a lot of memorization and PERFECT execution in the game itself; not a moment's hesitation, and calculations must be quick.
The Casinos allow you to use a Basic Strategy Guide card and keep it in your hand providing you don't slow the game down too much so you don't have to memorize it.
I bought a book on card counting called Beat the Dealer. I got it because I'm a math guy and was curious. I ended up not finishing it because I don't really play Blackjack or gamble, and the minutae of the game were too tedious for me to follow. However, that book had a more complex method involving little tables, depending on variations of the game. This looks more like a quick mental shortcut and a basic strategy that anybody would/could/should use if they plan to play blackjack.

The card counting gives you an idea of the approximate composition of the remaining cards in the deck; that is, whether the cards are in your or the house's favor (and so whether to bet high, or else to bet low or leave the table), plus it allows you to vary the strategy (for example, if the count is high - that is, there are a significant number of tens and aces left in the deck - it is more advantageous to double even when basic strategy tells you that you shouldn't do that). But no matter what, you don't know what the next card will be (that is, unless the dealer accidentally exposes it).
That's nice now skip to the part where I can summon Exodia to obliterate everyone
I swear to God I thought counting cards just meant “oh Jack is 10, that means I need 11 more :)”
If so, then this movie is for you. www.imdb.com/title/tt0478087/
I think it is more about how to do it but not how it works, it all comes down to math.
Who in their right mind would watch a film with a meta critic score of 48
I know right? Fuck having your own opinion, am I rite guy.
SleepingDragon1st I get where you are coming from but ain't nobody got time for watching a movie that was said to be bad by an overwhelming majority
Counting cards only ever gives you a marginal advantage over the house. It will never be flashy or impressive even if you do pull it off. The only time your friends will be impressed is when you spend an entire weekend at the blackjack tables and end up a couple hundred up and maybe get kicked out of the casino.
He lost me when he brought in my mortal enemy: division
Once the running count went over 21, I ran out of appendages to keep track of it. I also got kicked out for having my pants down at the table.
Me during graduate school: Mastered calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations
Me now: Don't know how to add
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA this is me. Good with numbers and yet I'm pausing it just to freaking add.
I love how he spoke slowly as he explained it, and dealt the cards like a machine 😂😭😭
Thank you. I'll stick with the slot machines
slot machines are standard on a 60/40 payout. so you always lose there. for every dollar you put it in pays out 40 cents. so slot machines are a sure way to get money into the casino.
That's not what 60/40 means, 60/40 would mean you'd get 80 cents per dollar. But your overall message is correct. It's not worth it.
Slots are the reason casinos make so much money, not blackjack. Stop throwing money way.
slots is basically lottery but you're wasting a whole day playing instead of just a few seconds to buy a ticket.
then again the wonder is when you will get lucky!
Me watching this before playing blackjack on gta online xd
Same XD
I can't believe that XD
Same!!! Lmao
Same lol
The deck shuffles every-time in GTA online though
The magic tricks blew my mind more than the counting!
Best video of card counting I've even watched !
Video: plus 1 plus 1 minus 1 plus 1
Me: aight imma head out
He's probably talking slowly so idiots like me can understand.
Meanwhile he lost me at -1
I’m watching this stoned and have not got a clue

I watching this completely sober and I'm right there with you
I'm watching it stoned and I'm doing okay, I keep pausing and rewinding but I'm 60% through the video

That can be solved by reversing the polarity!
Not gonna lie, watching this before going to watch “21” for the second time
I love that movie
That was a good movie,
Ok, so at 4:44 he says running count is 17, then the next hand goes (6 and 7 for +1; 8 and 6 for +2; 7 and 9 for +2; 4 and 10 for +2; 2, 2, 4, and Ace for +4) for a total of +4, then he raises it to 23. Shouldn't it be 21?
thank god im not the only one who noticed this too
I made the same comment just now. If a pro like him makes that mistake, us mortals are done for.
"Then you want to bet proportionately more"
Proceeds to slap two $5 down.
His magician skills caught my attention rather than his speech
Dont need such technique, ALL I NEED ARE THE HEART OF THE CARDS
Is nobody gonna bring up How good his sleight of hand is
Remember that casinos are private places aka they can kick you out whenever they want. If you’re obvious and they understand you are using this strategy, you’re out. I even heard that some memory champions are not allowed in because they can count the cards that have come out (which is also why they use more then 1 deck for each play).
It sounds like he is explaining it perfect but I didn't understand a thing... gotta watch it some more times before Vegas.
I love the card mechanics and manipulations! Very entertaining along with the academic commentary!
Uhm sound like a movie I saw
Of all the jokes made in the comment section, this is my favourite!
Kmart sucks
So, at minute 5 when the running count was on 17, first hand was a +1, next hand was also a +1 and the next two hands were zero. The dealer's cards were +1,+1,+1 and the final card A for ,-1. How do you get 23 running count?
I know it's been two years but I was looking for the comment that pointed out the count was actually 21 lol
Same here... It's 21
I rewatched like 5x bc I assumed I was mistaken.
Pro-tip: first learn basic strategy, then worry about counting.
Absolutely.. And learn and understand that basic strategy will change depending on the table you are playing.. Whether single deck double deck or multiple deck shoes. Then will again also vary by table rules such as stand on all 17s stand on hard 17s surrender no surrender double after split no double after split etc etc
oluja 100 perc correct
Was paying attention to the technique then I noticed he was doing tricks n' shit.

Wired is so good at making videos they sub in poker footage in a blackjack video.
Right? People are tossing chips into a pile, and sliding whole stacks in at every cut scene.
Genuinely don’t know why people can’t understand this perfectly explained technique.
Because they don’t know basic strategy yet
a simple way to beat blackjack is if you lose, just double your bet. Keep doing that until you win again and win back what you lost. Statistically, its hard to lose more than 6 hands in a row.
Yeah no
I think you need to know how many decks the dealer mix in the bunch, and reset your count once you see the dealer reshuffles or bring out a new group of cards.
i love that he uses sleight of hand for teaching
my brain 05:36
That's pretty interesting. Would love to hear more.

Woah respect for the people who actually count cards
Rain man was quick with the math
Keeping running/true count using Hi-Lo seems straight forward enough, it's the basic strategy of the game that melts me; can't remember all those plays.
Sam Bakula time and practice is all it takes.
Like what deviations??
Can you ask the dealer what the count is so you don't have to follow it so closely?
fungidungie Johnson Why would he tell you? LOL
You can ask, if you want a good laugh. Why would the dealer count the cards?
Jamie Malokas It won’t be a good laugh when they back you off for counting cards.
So they can easily detect any player who is trying to use this method against the casino, and next inform the pit boss.
i knew i wasnt going to understand anything and yet i still watched the whole thing. not disappointed
The hardest part for me is staying focused. Sounds, people shouting, lights. You gotta stay focused on game
maybe the drinks and cigarettes will help
They Will know in counting when I ask the dealer what's a 5 neutral or low
1-6 low, aces and faces high. Rest are seros
Anyone else come here after watching the movie 21?
The only reason I'm here, I saw the film and decided the dealer doesn't give anyone enough time to count cards. This vid didn't help. I'll stick to the lotteries.
Brandon Myles yepppppp
yeah , that's why not everyone can count the card. Good memories and math are must requirement

Alan Franks Lotteries are even worse odds though...
I don’t count and still got kicked out of the casino for being lucky

The ending math is wrong. Start with +17. 6/7 = +1, 6/8 = +1, 7/9 = 0, 4/10 = 0, 2/2/4/A = +2. Net = +4 so add this to 17 is 21 and not 23.

Your Thunderbird performance is pretty good! Great slight of hand!
@@sanfranciscobay they allow that basic strategy guide, because they still have the edge with you using it!
Anyone who can pull this off deserves to win big and casinos are foul for barring these geniuses.
I’m just going to stick to counting my fingers when I do math
Perfect basic strategy changes with the count. Low count = less chance of busting.
