  • Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:
▶ a frontal impact test where 50% of the width of the car strikes an oncoming deformable barrier, travelling at 50 km/h
▶ a frontal impact test where the car impacts a full-width rigid barrier
▶ a side impact test where a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
▶ a pole test where the car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole and the robustness of the centre airbag is evaluated
▶ a whiplash test performed on a sled.
A series of pedestrian tests are also conducted with different impactors : adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form. As well as AEB pedestrian and cyclist tests. In 2023 a test scenario for Cyclist Dooring Prevention was introduced.
Active safety is rated based on the performance of the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking car-to-car and car-to-motorcycle scenarios, occupant status monitoring (including seatbelt reminders, fatigue, distraction and impairment), lane support and speed assistance technologies.

4* is quite a disappointing result considering the Ora Funky Cat got 5* and much higher scores. I expect better of a big manufacturer such as Hyundai considering unknown Chinese start ups are performing better in these tests.

They give 4 stars to it just because the radars and sensors fails. Meanwhile, about inside vehicle safety, it has still quite good percentage (+80%)

Why did it get only 60% on Safety Assist? Besides the bicycle test it seemed to perform rather well.

Even though Hyundai is a long-established manufacturer, I felt a little disappointed with this result.

All the 2024 kona come standard with AEB along with the previous model but the new model gets Junction turning collision and blind spot collision avoidance also in Australia.
They must get less safety aids in some overseas markets.

I have a 2021 Kona and it's lane keep assist, especially on rural roads is not good. On the motorway it's superb.

You can look up the written report. It explains protection for the chest was marginal. Dummies slipped underneath the seat belt. One point from getting a 3 star rating.

Considering the Kona electric costs up to £46,000, that is a disappointment and really shows how expensive it is compared to similar rivals.
The cheaper entry level version is lacking big time in spec.

  • @sachah2400

NCAP actually put out a press release saying the new Kona was only 1 point from getting a 3 Star rating, and NCAP was very disappointed with the result. A big fail from Hyundai who told all the motoring writers they were confident the car would get 5 stars. You can look up the reporters reviews over the last 5 months where they all say it will get 5 stars.........Yet only 1 point from a lowly 3 star rating. A huge embarrasment for the new Kona and Hyundai.

but are people really looking at these tests when they purchase the car? most people will look at price, interior big screen, and exterior led bar

    • @sachah2400
      @sachah2400 3 місяці тому +1

@Giloug fleet buyers and company buyers all look. Most fleet and company purchasers only buy 5 star rating, including ours. Hyundai Australia said last week the 4 star rating will hurt sales as it rules out company sales. Hyundai said they will address the updated model in 3 years to obtain 5 stars. It is in a story I read this week.
