- The spirit of gravel is all about the freedom and the vibe and the community. Gravel has no rules...
That being said here are the rules of the spirit of gravel. Make sure you follow them if you want to be a true gravel cyclist.

Are there any rules of the spirit of gravel that I missed? Let me know in the comments.
I'd add one: It's appropriate to accept the fact that gravel roads by definition will be hugely imperfect (rutted, washboarded, laced with potholes and or exposed rocks), so moaning about how bad said roads were after a "Gravel Ride" is kind of idiotic. I like a good spattering of technical sections myself, but 20km of sand and washboard at the end of a long ride will set me off I confess.
You have to wear a fake 'stache unironically, and refer to yourself as a "privateer".
Great, now you look weird in every video where you didn't have a mustache...
When you spot someone who broke the spirit - yet won the race - be sure to point out the quality of the gravel they raced on, i.e. luxury gravel, cadillac gravel, kitty litter gravel, hampton's driveway gravel, fast gravel, aero gravel, world tour gravel, uci gravel, etc...
Don't attack someone having a water break, unless everyone is attacking while drinking water at the same time.
"Choose a side and be a dick about it!" Modern communication in a nutshell.
Sad but true...
I heard this and could only think of the splinter WhatsApp groups in my local club
And post about it.Constantly.
And always, put others down.
Division is a issue ha ha ha 🤣🤦
Dylan - you missed the main unwritten rule of professional gravel that I have seen other top gravel racers talk about: No Tactics! The strongest person should win and if you are not the strongest but win by making good tactical decisions that is not fair and not how to win the 'right' way. 😂. As as outsider observing the gravel world I have seen a lot of the things you talk about and find them very confusing. I really enjoy your channel for the training content and the backwards hat moments. Keep it up!
Cyclist are very confusing in all types of riding. I have always been confused by the Enduro Bros hating on the XC mountain bikers. Why? It’s a real thing, the disdain enduro bros have for XC guys. I’ve never understood it.
In fact, many of the XC guys are just Enduro Bros that actually train. Lol.
Cycling. It’s awesome and entertaining.👏🤟😁
@@chrisknepper5153 it’s bc they dress and act like roadies haha
@@chrisknepper5153 It's the lycra skinsuits.
Hit the nail! I started out as a mtbr and still consider myself one -- but now I no longer limit myself and train on all bikes. With rare exceptions Mtbros seem to be the most openly critical of all the sub genres of cyclist. It's suprisingly rare to experience the camaraderie of two wheels among that group. Can't recall ever once getting verbal grief from a roadie or gravel cyclist (to my face!) but mtbros lose their sh*t over the littlest things -- and again, as a group, they're without a doubt the most prejudiced, ignorant and haute couture fashion obsessed of any riders out there! What's up with just living and riding? lol
That doesn’t even make sense.
You forgot the sandbagging rule where when you are riding on the road you can justify your performance by saying you are spending too much time gravel riding. Then the converse when you are struggling on a gravel ride you use the excuse that you have been doing too much road riding.
Emporia resident here and gravel is first and foremost about hipster facial hair. The stranger and weirder the facial hair the better. Next it's about admitting you will never be able to adjust a front derailleur so you have gone 1X. Otherwise gravel is very cool, it eliminates the road, racer, mtb and other cliques that divide the cycling community. We just ride bikes.
The channel is chock full of informative videos, but this one easily beats them all!
Really Well Done - I think you nailed all the main gravel gripes spot on lol. I confess I'm more impressed that you can produce both an exclusively funny vid and super geek ones on the same channel and that both types of video are compelling to watch. This is a rare skill in my opinion !
Agree - this is journalistic perfection!
Hilarious sarcastic master class on the subject! One thing my wife used to say after attending road races with me, “bike racers are aholes”. I used to laugh about it, but knew there was some truth in the statement. Riding gravel events in my senior years now, I try to stop and offer help to fellow competitors that are having a mechanical. I think not being a dick may be the biggest unwritten rule in Gravel. Or that is my hope.
Love it when a kid shows up to a gravel race on a mountain bike with a big chainring and proceeds to drop the gravel grinders on the technical parts
I would add a spot to this about how gravel event organizers advertise about "sustainability and inclusion" as the participants pull up to the Expo with Sprinter vans and Land Rovers to purchase $300.00 gravel specific bibs.
Haaaa 😝
“What’s important is that you choose a side and be a dick about it” perfect explanation!
This gives me strong *Bro Science Life* vibes from the early days! 🤣
Love this. Your forgot about the kerfuffle when a whole team of riders was dedicated to pacing and drafting and getting one rider to the finish in first - ie road team tactics - was a huge concern for the spirit of gravel… also wait until riders who lost their road careers to doping get into gravel races
Rule#? Train six months for a gravel race that you tell everyone that you aren't taking seriously and your just out there to enjoy the ride and placing doesn't matter. Then do everything you can to win and if you don't complain that the winner takes Gravel to seriously.
The people I hear complaining most about maintaining the spirit of gravel are ex world tour pros
They don’t want to go back
@@kjwagoner they can't go back
Maintain the Spirit of Gravel while providing World Tour support and big prize purses.
@@kaseycarpenter73 you can never go back
just seen that Gravel riders are upset with the UCI for putting pro roadies at the front of the UCI World Gravel Championships and leaving the real gravelers at the back!
Amazing! I hope Mustachioed Dylan can join Backwards Hat Dylan as a recurring character! And yes as a roadie who’s only willingly ridden 1 km of gravel (never again!), I’ve always considered the spirit of gravel to be caked mud and sore taints!
So it's basically an easy form of cyclo-cross 🤣
This IS BHD, just with beard
the mustache "ride race pro" thing, killed me at 2:15
Stetina is suing lol....
This is beautiful satire, Dylan. Bravo!
Loved the ending! The mustache flying off to reveal an actual mustache in growth mode, lol
Imagine if Dylan did a video on the “spirit of triathlon”? It’d easily be 30 minutes long 😂
Accurate. Dylan we need this
-triathlete
this needs to happen! -triathlete 2
Not needed since triathletes do not know how to properly ride a bike😮
Dylan has peaked. This is his Magnum Opus.
It would be the first peak of Dylan’s season for sure😂
Completely BRILLIANT!!!!
Gravel chamois cream …. Sounds painful to me! First Trainer Road and now Gravel, two sacred cows of cycling taken down ! What next ? GCN Training videos…😉
It’s literally made of gravel. 😂😂
I genuinely wish I could "Like" this video at least a dozen times! Absolute UA-cam perfection!
You‘d need a checkered shirt to embrace the spirit of gravel. And of course you need more than one bike.
Thanks for showing there's nothing wrong with being self aware, even about your obsessions.... as long as you can laugh at yourself while doing it. Cheers.
What about the exhorbitant price you get to pay to be part of inclusivity of a gravel race when you can ride the course with friends for free. I get to pay over $200 or more to be able to start with some pros and never see them again till we watch them get all the prizes on the podem. Oh ya, sometimes you get a beer ticket and a not so decent meal after it.
So good! Perfect blend of truths and sarcasm 🤘🤘
I spend hours vexing over my tire & attire choice for the next gravel ride, and, when the start time comes, I tend to get mentally exhausted and decide to stay at home to think some more about the upcoming gravel event 😴
The bit about the t-shirt is spot on... "Intentionally unintentional"!
Awesome! this video was sorely needed..
Flipping brilliant!!! Loved it 👍
Super informative! Provided answers to questions I didn't know I had... in a good way.
So much awesome shade in this video. Regardless.. gravel is legitimately awesome. IMO, it's the best parts of road and mountain biking and it gets people on bikes, which is good.
It also makes a ton of money, which is better.
Sure, but you can still laugh about all these gravel sheriffs.
Indeed. Riding a bike is awesome! Riding a bike where there are less cars is even more awesome, hurray! As a cyclist, I have pretty much given up on my road bike because of the cars-so the gravel bike makes a lot of sense for those days I am not riding the mountain bike. Anyway, good to see Dylan poke fun at it all-including his one self.
This is why I subscribed! Excellent material 😆
It's a bold move to make this video. So two thumbs up 👍👍
You have to appreciate someone who can laugh at themselves. Looking at you Dylan, the guy who has made several videos regarding tire tread and pressure }:>
Your best video Dylan. You nail the absurd posturing perfectly!
This is hilarious! Dude, you got me in stitches. No not small stitches, or slightly bigger small stitches, but in small stitches bordering on medium sized stitches😆.
The spirit of gravel compels you!
@2:23 dude, you're amazing and what you do is unique and great, in spite of all the pros out there. You're an inspiration to us all. Keep it up, so many people got your back, you've no idea 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾. Cheers from a random Venezuelan in Argentina
All I can say about your videos and the sharing of your research and training methods is a BIG "Thank you". Love the humor too.
Another great video as always VC
Haha, I see what u did there! 😂
love it...never take yourself too seriously!
Thank you I now realise I have being it so wrong, until now I have been riding my road bike in gravel races, running road tyres at normal pressure and now realise why I am frowned upon at the start, and I now realise the joy of riding past the same guy who told me not to ride road tyres when he is punctured is actually wrong, I now know the main purpose of gravel riding is to give all those guys who are " overbiked"
a new outlet to bore with war stories. Keep up the good work !
That was your best video!
Awesome video!! 🤘🥸
Most informative video yet ; )
Beautiful video on Gravel spirit!
This is the the best video you've made to date. We need more Backwards Hat Dylan
Spot-on!
I seriously hope Payson McMoustache and Pete Stache'ina see this before another "spirit of gravel" interview.
thanks for clearing that up for me
Dylan you absolute legend
Pretty damn spot on……..well done, sir…….well done indeed!
Absolutely incredible
Dude I love your videos. But this one is my favorite
This is so good. Don’t forget about how to wash a gravel bike!!!
As someone who “rode gravel” for YEARS (on an old touring bike, or my road racing bike or my CX race bike) I really appreciate Dylan addressing the issue of all the “must haves” that the industry (and many riders) try to make us think we need!
Best post ever!
This is the best humor video i’ve seen in a long while. Nice job! And thanks we all need to laugh more and judge less nowadays. It just dawned on me that you didn’t mention gearing. I, and nearly every othe graveler i know, have agonized over gearing. The hills are steep in our area and most gravel bikes just are not geared low enough, but have road freehubs. Spreadsheets, mullet setups, too wide of spacing in 1x setups, but 2x is old school…. A lot of draMa and judgement around susp forks and droppers also.
great video from Podcast McOrangeSeal
on point, Sir!
Your best video ever!
SO GOOD!
Brilliant. Some serious pro shade thrown :)
Wow! That was GOOD!
Ok Dylan… That was pretty Awesome! 👍🚴♀️🚴♂️🚴♀️🚴♂️
No one can describe gravel as well as Jeremiah Bishop (big fan of his TheImpossibleRoute videos with The Vegan Cyclist). When JB is describing gravel, I can close my eyes and sense the texture beneath my tires)
brilliant 🤙
So funny! I absolutely love it!
Good job summarizing just about every conversation we ever had in 5 minutes! Lol
Hilarious Dylan. Great stuff!
I’m not even a cyclist and this is funny! Quality content.
This is totally going on my feed, my story, into everyone's DMs, and my 'gram!
Brilliant!! 😄👌
Genius/hilarious video !!
Love the science in this one.
Two questions not answered - what's the correct tash length AND where does driveway gravel fit on the gnarl?
Love it!! And YES, I do gravel with my CX bike because...I don't have a gravel bike;-) Actually, my CX bike has two sets of wheels...asphalt (GASP!!) and gravel. 2 bikes in one. I have even attempted a few mountain bike trails with this beast and it (kinda) works. So, in the ''spirit of gravel'', here are my ''rules'':
1-Don't pivot, stay on the rivet
As an aspiring gravel pedal pusher I concur 🤣
I love the wit and humor.. i just miss riding old steel bike on farm roads in barn boots and while wearing denim work jacket.. maybe just feeling of freedom when young and naive. rain or shine.
Brilliant
Hillarious!
Love the Ostro gravel bike :)
love!
Best cycling vid ever
Funny funny video. Really great.
Love it!!! Too true!!!
Great!!! Thanks a lot!!! Fieras time in my live winning something 😀 don’t known what to do next…
ROFL!!! Thank you for this. Its just riding bikes :)
Rules are for roads man!!!
Out on the un-road we only have un-rules.
If you want to be **allowed** to win a gravel race, you have to have your own race!
Influencers shouldn’t be allowed to race- only compete so my race gets promoted on their channel (I made sure to announce that one on my Podcast).
The only training allowed has to have been done in the past twenty years of racing 100 days a year. Anyone doing high volume camps prior to UnBound is in direct violation of the spirit of gravel un-rule #366.8
My sponsors told me to say that commercialisation is RUINING the spirit of gravel.
That last sentence was perfect. I have literally heard guys say words to that effect whole daubed in ‘free’ kit and taking a pay check.
Your awesome, BH is to but don’t tell him that. There is whole other video of rules to keep ultra distance (tour divide) separate from “bike packing” separate from what you described. Ex) size of bike bags, location on bike, brand of bags, kind of rack, kind of straps. Wheel size choice 650b… mountain bike tire …. Toughest route, fastest known time. Full support crew vs none. Convenience store nutrition…. On on and on. It must be incredibly rewarding because there sure is a tone of nut butter to wade through…. Oh ya I’m not Dutch but can I get into their mafia?
Outstanding. My wife laughed throughout.
Not to take anything away from Dylan, I gotta say it is pretty easy to make your wife laugh.
I'm planning a similar speech for the tennis club I'm in .
This is great! As a 69 year old 'gravel guy' (lol), I have experienced all sorts of this bravado. Mainly, it's just talking smack at the coffee stop or post ride beer. Occasionally, it's discussed seriously, especially if after a gravel race. This is hilarious, 'cause we just rode for x number of hours for a T shirt.
One of the funniest cycling videos. You should do one for road racing and mtb racing
Dylan stepping up his edit game on this one.
Ride
Spot on.
I think the inevitable evolution of Gravel cycling will be that some of the most beautiful gravel roads are paved and that adapting to the gravel bike to perform better on smoother surfaces will be needed and that it’s easier to ride these smoother roads with stiffer, more aerodynamic shoes and an some helpers to cut the wind and bring you snacks.
Gold !!!
I always wanted to try gravel but the problem is I don't drink beer.
I always thought that my gravel rides were training rides for cyclocross (my mental health can't cope road) but now it is a religion.
Good to see that ye olde skool XC is back modern day trails are too gnarly for me.
As a bike shop guy it was funny to see all those industry guys boasting about gravel and when asked what makes this gravel they couldn't answer.
Still loving old XC.. I mean Alt Gravel (ever heard that label?)
