Please research the production of composite Turkish bows. 1 publication takes 1 year to produce. Because the Horns are made of animal tendons, solid horn pieces and a strong and flexible glue made of fish oil, and they are kept for 1 year to fuse with each other and flexibly dry. In addition, Turkish bows are placed between the two legs and set on the beam "in reverse", which increases the speed and impact power of the arrow. But it makes pulling power more difficult. imagine building a horn upside down and pulling 20 cm :D I think you will feel the pain in your arm for days. but Professional Turks were used to it. They have been trained in it since childhood.

A 14th century French knight and men-at-arms in heavy armor were very used to fighting on foot, plus their armor was generally proof against bows such as this firing such light weight arrows. Firing a bow at short range seems against the silly claims of 'great range' of the Turkish bow. Also shooting at some thin, flat steel sheet does not represent the curved and hardened armor of a knight's curass. Also even with the smallest amount of research they would know that the knight wears a gambeson (10-14 layers of linen padding), then chain mail and then the plate armor. It was generally proof against british war arrows which had arrow heads that were designed to penetrate armor and had twice the weight of these light arrows used. The documentation has some technical errors. They comparison of the turkish and the longbow was a total flaw. First this was not a real englisch longbow and second the drawweight was never mentioned. Maybe the turkish bow had to be the winner ...
English had to use bows made from one piece of wood because of the weather. A composite bow will fall apart in the British weather. Turks themselves did not campaign in Europe in the winter because of the weather.

The arrow was much heavier than the file we have today, which increases the penetration power enormously. You can't really compare a Turkish bow and a long bow because each bow serves its purpose in different ways.

Still what they had tested here was not the full capabilities of both bows as they willingly admitt, I don't know about British recods at that time but as also described here in Ottoman records, there were people who can use their bow to shoot a target from 800 meters away or so. So in the test they could only reach little more than half power of the Ottoman composite bow.

And the English archers did nothing else from childhood than to train with the bow, which in turn means that the right shoulder side was extremely strong and the left extremely stunted. According to archaeological excavations, this has been proven on skeletons. Battle of Azincourt documents the English superiority against an outnumbered opponent where around 10,000 English soldiers including 7800 archers and around 2000 armed knights competed against 50,000 French knights - the result is that long archers have largely penetrated the armor and completely destroyed the French
It may but when you think about battle those archers must have energy after shooting. If they use nearly 200pounds longbow they cant fight after 10 shoots so they have to use lighter then 200, nearly 160pounds or less. And that bow can make 110-80 j about 10m - 25m.

@@suunraze if you dont shoot all day you shouldnt shoot at battle. But difference between longbow and turkish(or eastern bow whatever you call it) is in fighting style. Turks are nomadic nation so they cant travel with heavy armor all the time for that reason everything about war is speed for Turks. But european nations are stay in town and village so they can carry their armor at war so their fighting style more static. Static warfare needs heavy armor, heavy weapons and also heavy bows but war of movement needs light armor, light weapons and speed. Both bows are good with their style and no one say which one is better.

@@dileb112You are 100% correct. The thing is laminated bows regardless of their models cannot endure draw weights above 60-70 lbs due to their structures. However, the composites bows made of genuine horn, wood, sinew and hide/sturgeon glue usually perform worse than laminate bows when they have draw weights under 60-70 lbs. But they are head and shoulders above the laminate bows beyond draw weights of ~80 lbs. The common bows avtually used in battles had draw weights of (roughly) 80 -120 lbs. But don't let these figures mislead you. The season for battles were mostly spring and summer. The organic materials used for making bows are highly sensitive against heat and their draw weights were getting weaker considerably under such conditions. For instance a bow that has 110-120 lbs draw weight may become 80-90 lbs under hot weather conditions. Maybe that's why the fighters mostly had 2 bows with them during battles. You can see way stronger bows in the museums like 180-250 lbs but we assume that these were for show-offs rather than for being employed in warfare.

Any bow against well made plate armour have no chance, arrows dimly break on impact. But If you aim In between plates in less protected areas then it had a chance. It’s been proven many times. Also killing horse would be more effective…
Museums in Turkey is full of examples of arrows penetrated metals and wood. They might not be able to do this today but it does't mean they couldn't do it in the past. And also even bullet can not penetrate into todays tecnological armors so it is not logical making comparison without taking into consideration the era people lived in.
