    Berkeley Big Game mono is all I use for leader material. Cheap and it works great. I have also noticed that “leader material” seems to be harder than regular line off the bulk spool.

    I have always use left over spools, of what ever I had used spooling reels. It was on hand, and used as leader material. Those small spools (110 yards) of 20 lb. Floro / mono work great! Best bang for your buck!

    Seaguar inshore flouro… relatively new and much less expensive than blue label. 100 yd for $20 for 30 lb which is cheaper than Vanish.

    Love both of those. I use those Ande mono spools to make my fly leaders and have been using Vanish for tippet and leader on conventional gear for a while. They work great. For dark backwater snook where visibility is little, I prefer Mason’s hard mono. That stuff is fantastic and holds up to those gill plates

    I used plan mono sten trilean for years and caught thousand of fish so then fluo started makeing the fishing news but you can see it just as well as mono there plenty of test out there that prove it maybe in certain water conditions might be alittle better but would it make s real differents i call ify on that

    2:42 ' monofilament no problem because it is more abrasion resistant' Excuse me if I am wrong, since when monofilament line is more abrasion resistant than fluorocarbon line?

    I have to ask. Keep the comments in line guys. Tony, my question is, why should I buy 20lb mono "leader material", when I already have mono line. Isn't mono, just mono?

    may be OK for Short leader, I would Not advise using Vanish for spooling a spincast, it will literally leap off the reel in tangles.

      I quit using fluoro altogether because I couldn't afford the high end stuff and honestly it's just hype IMO. I'm sixty one years old and have caught thousands of fish on monofilament before braid became a thing. If it ain't broke...

    I generally fish the mostly dirty water here in Charleston SC and usually use either the Ande or Momoi diamond mono. When I need a fluorocarbon leader in the cleaner water I usually use Seaguar Blue or Yozuri.

    When I'm going for snook and tarpon I fish 40 lb braid with 50 lb yozuri fluorocarbon cause I find it on sale a lot. When I'm fishing a smaller rig for regular fish I use 25lb Berkley Trilene big game( with 15 lb mainline braid). cause you can get like 500 yd from Walmart for about 12 bucks. Sometimes ill buy some 25 lb fluorocarbon which is typically just whatever I can find on sale cause I buy it and use it pretty rarely, I just don't find that fluoro makes much of a difference even in clear conditions.

    I’m new to saltwater fishing. Do you need to use a leader when fishing for redfish if your mainline is around 12-15 lb test?

    • @pakde8002
      @pakde8002 3 роки тому +1

      If your main line is braid then the answer is yes in most cases. If your main line is a decent quality monofilament then you should be okay without a leader in most situations.

    Tony, I could never find a UA-cam video or article explaining what products labeled "Leader" are, or why I needed to use specific leader material when I started saltwater fishing. Are products labeled "Leader" any different than, say, regular 20# mono? Even Seaguars website fails to answer the question.

    • @dwalsh18
      @dwalsh18 3 роки тому

      Good question. I could not find an answer anywhere. There does seem to be a difference between leader material and line. I had 20 lb seagur florocarbon leader and 20 lb flourcarbon line. The leader felt thicker and less flexible. In short it felt stronger but is a lot more expensive. I have been buying flourocarbon line but usually use a heavier test like 25 or 30 lb. So far, I have not lost any fish due to this and get a lot more for the money.

      The diameter is the only thing I've come across other than that is just another scam to take away your hard earned money. I've caught a 6 foot hammerhead with a 2.49 Walmart mono spool, 80 pounds as leader

      most plastic products do, not just fluorocarbon fishing line.
