I start mine with brute force. We can't get firelighters here in Mongolia - I'm a British expat - but we can get butane. So I put 20kg of semi-coke briquettes (the approved and cheap coal product we have here) in the burner, put kindling on top, then blast the kindling with a butane torch. Once the wood is burning well, I can close the vents most of the way and it burns all night.
My system is not a stove, but a boiler, which feeds 5 radiators filled with anti-freeze. We're a lot colder than almost anywhere habitable, so the system is designed to keep us warm down to -50C outside at night and 20C inside.
Just for comparison purposes, a 25kg bag of semi-coke briquettes cost us £1 per bag and that's sufficient for a day in the winter. Less is required in the shoulder seasons.
We also burn firewood but at about 8x the cost by weight and thermal output, coke is our cheapest and best choice.
Brilliant. Took me two hours to try to get my stove going yesterday and went through way too much kindling. Found your video and got it going in minutes. I feel like a bit of an idiot 😂.
We have all been there! I'm glad the video was helpful
I’ve just had a multi fuel stove fitted in my home and yours is the perfect video to show me how to use coal thank you. Look forward to trying it out.
I'm glad you found the video helpful, I also have a wood tutorial video on my channel, thanks for watching.
i always start with a bed of coal on the bottom then kindling stacked on top then a log on top of the kindling and it never fails to light first time , i also use eco wood firelighters i never use parrifin lighters but i suppose theirs lots of different ways to light a stove
Good video. Very helpful, thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching
The fastest and reliable form is just to put kindling on the bottom of furnace (try criss cross some wood peaces) when you do that so that is airy structure and put about 800g of quality black coal on it. Ignite 2-3 peaces of fire igniter and put it somewhere in the middle of kindling. You are now warm and free for at least an hour :)
Cheers!..👍🏾
music at end = RIP headphone users!
Keep everyone on their toes 😂 thanks for watching
Nice video, I have solid fuel central heating, we have always burned anthracite, sadly now getting very hard to buy, may have to start burning ovals now.
Once again great video, also that’s how I start my stove.
Kind regards,
Johnny
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching and supporting my channel.
Wood burns at around 4kw per kilo and coal around 8kw per kilo [info from stove sellers on Y/T showing how to light a stove]
What are those blocks made from? Are they really anthracite coal?
I will make a tutorial on how to coal that is mined from the ground and it will be for a coal furnace that can heat a 2 story house
There is a problem with using man made ovals, large or small. Incomplete burning of the ovals produces carbon monoxide. If you riddle the ash into the ash tray it could give of c.mon - your c monoxide detector will tell you - so all ash needs to be tipped into a lidded ash carrier box and placed outside the home. You will also find that the ovals burn through more quickly than anthracite, and the inside of the glass will quickly be covered in a sticky "sooty" film. Anthracite is very hard to light. I use a half dozen small ovals with the firelighters and kindling, with some small anthracite pieces in between. When all are alight I carefully add more anthracite a few pieces at a time. I never thrown coal on the fire, I always carefully place it. Too much anthracite in one go can deaden the fire. And then it's s fight to resurrect it.
I some times start with a couple of logs to get the heat up faster and then when they burn down add the coal
That's one way to do it but you need to make sure you haven't been burning the wood for too long so you don't end up with a large amount of ash at the bottom, coal needs more airflow to get going, but if it works great stuff.
anthracite coal is able to burn but it takes a lot of work to keep it going and it burns extremely hot so it will heat up your house very quickly even if its a 2 story house
We have 1 anthrecite coal furnace in our basement and the fire box is like 1foot by 3 feet
A grenadier electric fire lighter is the answer if, like myself, your coal fires are your main source of heat.
Use a gas poker like my mum😂
Looks great. What is the make and model of your stove ?
The stove is a Stovax Stockton 5 multi fuel, thanks for watching.
Primark
compressed coal dust lumps. ive seen these. but no supplier sells them near me in usa. just lump coal
Surely the power of the internet can help you in the situation, but I'm very surprised you have no local suppliers. Thanks for watching
@@Milnero internet how i found the 2 lump coal supliers hr 30 away and 2h35 min away.lol
4 fire lighters lol, how many fire lighters do you get in a box and what is the cost?
I was paying as little as £1 a box for 40 fire lighters, the only reason for using additional firelighters when starting a coal fire is because it takes longer to get it started. A wood fire you can get away with one firelighter
Those things are called tongs.
Is that coal or charcoal
It's coal 😉
What flue have you got, there seems to be some talk online that anything other than 904 stainless will be ruined by smokeless coal and "The Tortoise" channel on YT calls it highly corrosive, we've got a 316L and the manufacturer claims it's suitable for solid fuel just not ordinary house coal.
So I don't actually have a flue liner installed within my chimney, however I have located a useful bit of information which answers your question. Thanks for watching.
I have no affiliation to this company.
www.flexifluedirect.com/316-904-liner-differences.html
@@Milnero No liner? Smoke and gasses straight up the brick work? sounds a bit old school, does the breast get hot? Has the chimney interior ever been inspected for perished bricks or pointing missing? That could lead to carbon monoxide leaking into one of the rooms.
@@RichardSmith-wr6go I own a 1950s property, the chimney is in good condition and I have carbon dioxide sensors thought out the house, I will at some point get around to installing a liner for efficiency, the breast only gets warm not hot.
@@Milnero Ah okay, we've got a new multifuel stove & twinwall flue on the exterior of the house, just fitted a multifuel kit (grate & ashpan pan) to try out smokeless coal, it's a bit of a learning curve getting the smokeless coal going and that's why I landed on your YT vid, some of these modern stoves only have 1 air controller that operates primary, secondary and tertiary air while most people still reference top & bottom air vents.
Fire tongs
Sounds rite to me, I had a total mind blank at the time lol
Is that coal? What kind? Looks like CHAR-coal. Also known as compressed wood dust. Maybe some countries consider that coal? I don't know. In the states we have coal. Actual coal. Black rock
House coal is now illegal in the UK.
Please realise that lighting a wood fire from underneath creates considerably more smoke/pollution than the 'top down' method.
Buy a coal cage ! :))
I did look into the coal cage but wasn't convinced I needed one because my multi fuel stove has a grate, what makes you suggest one?
@@Milnero not only will your fire stay in for 6-7 hours you’ll use about a third less coal :)
I read that you can get a much longer burn time, however getting the stove up to temperature was a real pain in the backside
Hi I have never started a fire with Firelighters, 3 Sheets of The Daily Telegraph is what I use and CHEAPER, This I have done for 50 years . Cheers
There are certainly many methods to light a fire, I have used most of them including a newspaper.
Firelighters keep burning far longer than paper, guaranteeing that you don't have to relight the kindling for a second time. whichever method you choose enjoy the warmth of your fire and thanks for watching.
I like using old newspaper as well
That looks like charcoal briquettes. That is not coal?
'House coal' is now illegal to burn in domestic dwellings in the UK. Only briquettes are available.
@thedubwhisperer2157 That is insane. Sorry to hear that. I heat my home with coal exclusively here in the US.
@@RockHavenFarm All part of our government's obsession with their 'Carbon Neutral' fantasy...
Smokeless briquettes cost us almost £1 per kilo (over $1000 per ton).
Why are you burning charcoal briquettes? That's not real coal.
I'm burning Brazier Smokeless Coal it has a number of benefits over standard coal.
Suitable for use in smoke control areas
Lasts 40% longer than standard coal
Produces 80% less smoke than standard coal
Emits 25% less CO2 than standard coal
Leaves little residual unburned fuel compared to traditional coal.
Try that Ecoal which is made of olive stones burns for a long time
I will do thanks, I need to pick up a few more bags so will add in some of this as well.
that is what we have to use in smokeless zones, plus ordinary house coal is hard to get even in non smokeless zones, can not be bought in my area
Wickes it is £10 a bag or 3 for £24
B&M £7.99
B&Q dearest at £11 a bag or 2 for £17
Tongs
That's charcoal.
"Coal Fires"? That Black Fuel is in Overabundance.. Just need all the Tools of the Trade, a Good Fire, some Tools of Practice and then Burn it from the Bottom Up...
Then keep Adding Coal, as Needed... Everyone Burns Coal these Days..
I think is the Message that my UA-cam Channel Feed is telling me?
i can make a better tutorial using only wood and old newspaper and one lighter/match and using actual coal and not charcoal
He is using compressed charcoal
I Look forward to your video!
We have to use smokeless coal.
real coal can no longer be bought
Coal is bad for the avarment
Smokeless coal has a far lower co2 impact than traditional coal.
It's better than freezing to death!
Not so bad for the environment when your boiling your kettle or charging that phone your typing on from coal fired power plants though hey
Also, what's avarment?
It astonishes me. These mugs complaining about coal being bad for the environment.
Whilst using phones with lithuim batteries. Eating food from supermarkets with intensive agriculture. Clothing from synthetic sources
Of course your gas fired boiler with gas shipped from the other side of the world (probably russia), transported in huge polluting tankers, refined at great energy cost, then shipped again in huge polluting lorries to pumping stations using huge amounts of energy for you to burn in your boiler, is so much better than the guy next door burning a small amount of coal from the local mine
This is as bad as Bushcraft people 😂 wayy over analyzed
Devils in the detail!, and some people need a longer explanation, thanks for watching.
Ummmm Coal Burns Way Hotter Than Wood Matey
Coal burns hotter than wood but Charcoal burns hotter than coal but coke burns hotter than charcoal
