Sean will answer too, but imo it's whether the musician who arranged it is classically or jazz trained! So in this case Sean is trained classically on piano and classically trained when it comes to composing, but there are definitely a few jazz influences thrown in this arrangement as well.
Since I'm a classical pianist, I don't really have the skills to do actual jazz (I took one class in jazz improvisation, which was helpful, but does not make me a jazz pianist), so I have to fake it with writing out everything - there's no improvisation in this (and it wouldn't be particularly good if I tried to). So even the earlier parts of the cover are kind of between classical and jazz - like classical composers (Milhaud, for instance) who have been influenced by jazz. When I first started imagining this, it was basically "what if Attention, but jazz?" and then I thought...why should I be the one to do that cover? We have actual jazz musicians on the channel, and I can only be a fake jazz pianist. And the concept fell into place when I thought of having it turn toward Messiaen's influence later on, which brought it back to classical - to what I can do myself. I hope at some point someone does a proper jazz cover of Attention - not to replace this one; I feel like I succeeded at what I meant to do with this cover - but to have a different take on it, going fully into jazz in a way that I don't have the skills for.
