The plasma gun is honestly a no-brainer pick especially if you are a guardsman that's always on the frontlines. Consider what you'll be fighting and how they are going to kill you in the worst way possible. Consider now this: 1) Weapon fires successfully = you kill a bunch of bad guys and likely will get promotions 2) Weapon detonates and kills you = well it's over but you didnt feel a thing and that drukhari didnt get you as his waifu
Let’s be honest plasma was never rare. The mechanicus just doesn’t want the imperium to have as many as they could. That way if the imperium ever turns against them they will always have the technological advantage.

In fact, the only reason the worship of the Omnissiah is tolerated in the first place is because the Adeptus Mechanicus is so vital to the Imperium.
One cannot deny the effectiveness of Plasma weaponry, and it's a crying shame that their manufacture and maintenance are a failing art. If the Imperium could rediscover the correct techniques and refine down the design to something more reliable and less volatile... well, they'd have a weapon to answer any battlefield problem on the spot! As it stands, perhaps it's better that they remain rare and revered because an Imperial Plasma Gun on the field represents an equal hazard to allies and enemies alike.
If they could standardize plasma weapons among the imperial guard and fix the issues of producing and maintaining them, the Imperium would definitely have a much more powerful fighting force.
its not even that they don't know how to produce them, its that the admech is too anel about talking to each other that those who know don't share how to. i can understand not fixing them given how many gaps there is in their technical understanding of so many things, but surely they should be willing to spread the faith and the great works of the machine god? i can only guess there's something else at work to limit the spread of technology between forge worlds.

the plasma gun is nice, and as a Dark Angels player, i can confirm that it works well. however, my go-to energy weapon is the Westinghouse M-25 Phased Plasma Rifle, in the 40-watt range. that thing is exceptional against infantry and armor.
Base around most studies & theories, the 40K standard infantrymen lasgun & Star Wars E-11 blaster carbine, its carbine let be clear not a full-on riffle that was the E12, are what is called a laser-generated plasma beam particle pulse energy weapon, as this is due to the fact that the human eye cannot actually see the laser beam itself it being outside our optical colour detection range, but the basic of it pretty much the same, and before people comment of the Star Wars weapons being plasma-based, most of the plasma itself is an of a small amount used during firing only enough for it to be turned from gas the energy during firing when the laser beam heats & detonates the gas in the firing chamber, which is rail gun tech btw., so they do fly faster then slug weapon, the only reason you see them being deflected by Jedi & Sith is because of cinematography reasons, the lasgun creates thermal energy via the detonation of hydrogen & oxygen in the air, Now DC-15A & DC-15S series riffles are more than full-on plasma weapons like their 40K counterparts, this is due to the pressurised ionized gas being far more concentrated, then other variations and fully charged shot could do a lot of damage, 40K plasma weapons use the same principle do to the blue energy but are more akin to grenades,
Hey I’m leaving this here because I’m stumped. I’ve been looking for this version of a gun the imperium used pre crusades that was similar to plasma guns but they look much cooler and don’t overheat. They still exist, but there extremely rare and a sign of high rank. If anyone knows the name of them please comment.

6:27 Those Plasma Weapons are may useful. Both Imperial Guard and Space marine can use Plasma Weapons against enemy.
They're pretty rare, but yeah, both guardsmen and space marines use them.
