    In this quick video I give a brief description on how a stator works. I also show you how to test it using a multimeter use ohms.
    I did for get to mention the process the stator uses.Depending on the configuration of a spinning electromotive device the stator may act as the field magnet, interacting with the armature to create motion, or it may act as the armature, receiving its influence from moving field coils on the rotor. The first DC generators (known as dynamos) and DC motors put the field coils on the stator, and the power generation or motive reaction coils on the rotor. This is necessary because a continuously moving power switch known as the commutator is needed to keep the field correctly aligned across the spinning rotor. The commutator must become larger and more robust as the current increases.
    Stator winding of a generator at a hydroelectric power station.
    The stator of these devices may be either a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. Where the stator is an electromagnet, the coil which energizes it is known as the field coil or field winding.
    The coil can be either copper or aluminum. To reduce load losses in motors, manufacturers invariably use copper as the conducting material in windings.[1][2] (For more information, see: Copper in energy efficient motors). Aluminum, because of its lower electrical conductivity, may be an alternate material in fractional horsepower motors, especially when the motors are used for very short durations.
    An AC alternator is able to produce power across multiple high-current power generation coils connected in parallel, eliminating the need for the commutator. Placing the field coils on the rotor allows for an inexpensive slip ring mechanism to transfer high-voltage, low current power to the rotating field coil.
    I hope you found this video informative. Thanks for watching. Please help fund for future how to videos and reviews. Every little bit helps. Thank you / handymanpf Handyman Problem Fixer

    I've watched a dozen UA-cam videos to date trying to teach myself how to wire-from-scratch my 24hp B&S vtwin mower, I didn't know how to go about the stator, and your video is the first, out of at least 10, that broke it down to its most basic form. THANK YOU so much!! Subscribed.

    At the end of your demonstration, you said “voltage” instead of ohms or an ohmic value when you measured out of the connector to the stators’ core ring. Good demonstration. Thank you

    Excellent explanation!!! Thanks!!! The only thing I might add is at 3:45 to 3:47 you mentioned that in the Ohms setting that it would read "Voltage". The correct term for that OHMS setting would be "continuity" pronounced (Con-tin-nu-ah-tee) or "ohms" which is a measurement of resistance. You described it right but with incorrect terminology as you stated earlier between 3:05 & 3:15.

    Question ? I removed my flywheel from my Massey Ferguson 10 with a Tecumseh engine tonight trying to figure out why it's not getting a spark. My flywheel has two pins that passes under the coil. After replacing the coil and still not getting a spark i thought the problem may be the flywheel magnets because i could not detect any magnetic pulls on the firing pins of the fly wheel. what might I be over looking ? My magnets are encased in a solid aluminium ring that surround the stator . most flywheels have magnets on the outer rim but mines does not. Thank in advance for assisting

    Excellent video! Thank you so much for explaining this! Just what I needed. I have a 2015 S 900 Razor. I want to add another battery to it along with the stock battery. The second battery I want is a 925C Odyssey. Can you help figure out how I would do this? Should I go two of the same batteries and run a separator between both batteries? or, should I run all my accessories and my UTV off the one 925C battery only? Any advice and installation tips would be greatly appreciated.

    • @handymanPF
      @handymanPF  9 років тому

      Thanks for watching.That all depends on the load vs your alternator (stator) amperage output. Once the machine is running, the stator setup is doing the work and charging the battery. If you have to many loads that exceed your alternators output then it will start drain the battery. I would look into either a stronger alternator setup or some kind of capacitor or both. But if you have a high powered winch or something of the sort, then I would consider a stronger battery if the one you have now is not strong enough. I hope this helps. That custom stuff can get tricky and is alot of trial and error.

    That other video was put out on replacement of the Stator was put out or posted here on UA-cam by by Repair Clinic. One other point you might mention to clarify the purpose of the Stator which may help the average homeowner better understand the design and purpose is that it is in effect an alternator for the lawnmower similar to a car.

    When this is up and running the open circuit potential should be around 30 to 34 Vac. And if available, meggering between one of the leads and the inside metal ring can help assure that the winding insulation will be lless likely to break down.under stress.

    My 18hp Kohler on a Craftsman lawn tractor had been blowing fuses so I measured it with a DVM and found that it puts out 21VDC! I replaced the voltage regulator, and even temporarily clipped on a second ground though the original is in good shape, and again got 21V! The cooling fins were jamed up with fiberglass mice had dragged in there. Tested the stator for a short to ground, found none. Pulled the flywheel, cleaned the fins, and the stator, which appears to be in good shape. Reassembled everything, rechecked for shorts, and tested the AC Voltage coming off the stator, no load, only the meter hooked to it, measured almost 45VAC! Any idea what I should measure this way? And do I spend money for a third regulator? If you have a few minute for the whole story go to my videos on this.

    Great video. I'm having a red battery light on my zero turn and not sure what it is. It's an Kawasaki FX651V and not sure if it's stator or not. Questions are: Is it possible to remove the flywheel nut if I don't have an impact? And, is the engine manual supposed to show / tell what voltages I'm supposed to see from the regulator and/or the stator? The mower manual doesn't really go over anything to look for in troubleshooting for this unless the engine manual does. Not sure as of yet of that.

    • @randytravis3998
      @randytravis3998 Рік тому

      they make a wrench that holds the flywheel so you can remove the nut with out a impact gun ,, people try and use a screwdriver or pry bar and they will break a fin off the flywheel or break a tooth off the starter ring or break a part off the engine block ..another old trick is too pull the spark plug get a long rope fill the piston hole with the rope leave some rope out so you can pull it back out when done .. but when the rope is in the cyl and your turning the nut the piston will hit the rope stopping the engine from turning over .. if there is enough rope in the cyl ..leave enough rope hang out or you will have to pull the head off too get the rope out ..

    3:20 - I believe what you are saying is that you want continuity (~0-ohms resistance) across the leads (the first check), but infinite resistance from the leads to the body of the stator (you said voltage at 3:46 - I think you meant measurable resistance)?

  • @shadygrady1000
    @shadygrady1000 3 роки тому +2

    Good video. Continuity is half the battle with the first check. Need to verify resistance is within manufacture spec. A dead short (shorted windings) will still give you continuity but not correct output.

    So that little concoction of both a regulator and a rectifier. A regulator controls voltage and a rectifier changes the Ac input into dc output. Okay, something like that. Where does all the unused voltage go when voltage is not needed anymore? Can you tell if each one of those coils is wound the same way, and the same direction and all of them hooked up in series, or the winding direction and the way each is hooked up to the other appear more complicated?

      No. Just as long as it’s in Ohms and it’s not connected to any power. It’s best if you have the wire diagram just in case you have an oddball stator and the wire setup is different. Also because the current created by the stator is "AC" for Alternating Current, there is no need for polarity observance as with "DC" or Direct Current where you have pole specific current and position. I noticed in another video where they showed how to replace the stator but failed to mention that when removing and reinserting the pin connectors in the wiring harness, that polarity need not be observed as the current is Alternating Current and therefore has no specific polarity. Thanks to your better explanation it became apparent that there is no need to be worried about "correct pinning" or polarity observance as it is irrelevant.

I have a video on how to read wiring diagrams here ua-cam.com/video/TzZjVWPnXDg/v-deo.html . But the regulator / Rectifier need the stator to produce current to charge the battery. I just took the flywheel off of my mothers Scotts S2046 with a Briggs and Stratton Model #406777 Type: 0115 E1 because it's always had a problem keeping the batteries charged and noticed that there is no regulator just a diode in one of the wires. The stator and the underside of the flywheel were both pretty fouled up with dirt and grass. Is it possible to add a regulator to it myself and is there somewhere I can get a better quality stator for this because the one that is on here seems pretty cheaply made.

    hi can you put a different stator on a motorcyle?coz mine was really expensive i found a stator on ebay which is cheaper same number of poles and wiring attachment the problem is it has different holes to put the screws it it..

      +mintychocolate aj the different holes to put the screws in most likely will be an issue. I wouldn't be able to say for sure because I don't know what bike your working on and what part you are receiving. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe .

    Please help me understand my reading.. when I touch both terminals and hold it for 5 seconds my values change every second from 0 to 00.1, 00.2 sometimes 00.3 then 0.00. Is my stator bad or good?
    When I was testing it for volts (before removing it) I had zero volts coming out of 2 terminals

    I replaced my voltage regulator on my Kawasaki FH661V n my zero turn. I thought it was bad. It is still blowing fuses, but only if I attach the B+ wire up. If I leave it disconnected, all is fine. Do you have any suggestions?

      I'm working on a tecumseh v twin 18 hp model OV691EA SPEC 600824C
      The manual is not clear on the charging system. It shows what might be in the system and so far I have not found some of the mentioned items rectifier and diodes or regulator/rectifiers.
      Can these parts be part of what I would call a coil (spark plug lead)

      +Tim Curtis - A Stator is an Alternator. In a Car World= Alternator and in the Lawn Riding Mower / Small Tractors= Stator. *NOTE* : Both have the same function, they both Charge Battery or using as Accessories.

    • @jackc70

      skojo3e the voltage generated will vary as ac. Will pass thru a diode pack or bridge rectifier and convert it to dc for your battery. About 14Vdc while running but you will read 12Vdc across the battery terminals when your car engine is off

    Hi , I have 10-30 volts coming from the alternator as far as the regulator the same as the one as the video. I checked the wire going to the battery and it has 12.2 so the only thing it could be is the regulator
    I got a new genuine plugged it in but nothing , not DC coming out and the battery light is still on ? I'm completely baffled?
    Thanks

    Where does the stator wire hook up on a 12hp Briggs

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 5 років тому

      +Dennis Stimmell - Depend, some actually don't have it so it all depend on the set up. Best way to find out.... Look under your *Fly Wheel* and you should see the Wire coming out.... Follow that and you should see where it hook up to!

  • @aNuthaRedneck

    Good video and I'm sure people can understand. However, when you connect the meter you are checking for "continuity" there is no voltage. You are checking for ohms with the ohm meter, not voltage. Can pretty much do the same thing with a battery connected in series with a test light.

    On a 90 hp Force outboard motor if the stator is bad could it stop the motor from running even if all 3 spark plug wires have strong blue spark ?

    • @handymanPF
      @handymanPF  7 років тому +1

      +Karl Kirven Not the stator but the timer base / pulser coils could if the timing is off
      Also sometimes the spark can seem strong but under compression its weak
      Or won't hold up under compression

    Does the two wires coming off the stator need to be indentified? Or can they be hooked up either way on the terminals? Mine did not have a clip. Are they reversable is what I think I need to know. Thanks for the great video.

      handy man They should have had a separate fuse in the system just for if a copper winding "shorted out" it wouldn't fry the regulator/rectifier....which can both go bad at the same time from a mutual dependency on each other...your thoughts on adding one in...?

    Your measurement at the end was infinite ohms, meaning no connection between coils and inner metal housing (measuring resistance not voltage). I believe you said voltage but good stuff either way.

    To check it where it this located under the stator ?

    • @handymanPF
      @handymanPF  7 років тому

      Yeah usually there's a ground wire and black, and different colors for each pulser. Its located under the stator and should move / twist as you move the throttle.
      Also on those engines if compression is 70 or less it won't run.. Usually
