It sucks that Dime is gone but don't take Phil for granted. He is a metal legend and warrior. This guy put his body and soul through hell and back to serve us pure metal!! He is still a very important figure in metal. Metal is not around in a commercial sense but when it does come back it's gonna be sweet.
It's good to see How passionate Phil is about metal! You Realize that he really loves metal that's is one of the reason's he still relevant on metal scene. LONG LIVE PHIL H. ANSELMO.
I'm glad he brought the point up about Rob Halford not using falsesetto. Every time I read a short bio on Rob, they always say he uses it when he doesn't. Cool. :)
Seeing him live with Down at the Lincoln in Raleigh NC was probably the high light of my collective live show experiences. I spent 3 hours only feet from him. So much energy in one man, I was sincerely blown away by his stage presence. It was so powerful the way he feeds off the crowd's energy and vice versa. I am tremendously happy that he has a stable life and has found some enlightment. The music world needs Phil. He keeps shit honest, to the core.
This is by far one of the best interviews Phil has done in a long time! He wasnt stoned or drunk or trying to be...when how Phil is lol! He just sat there and told some awesome stories!
Fantastic interview. A lot of the details many of us have been curious about for years. Cool to hear what album he trained his voice on and what their first meet up was like. Also I think there are some youtube videos out there of Kerry jamming with them that Phil was referring to.
I also wanted to mention that in 1991 or 92 Pantera came to Montreal....at the time I was living in Canada and married...I knew that Pantera was coming to Montreal...t they were touring with Prong I was friends with Tommy the guitarist and singer he worked the door at the great CBGB/// I went to the show and Tommy brought me to the dressing room and I can say that I spoke and shook hands with the Great Dimebag Darrell...Phil was sitting there and he was pretty much in his own world..
Listen to him talk about the music that was around while he was growing up and compare it to the PC, sterilized, unchallenging horse that's being peddled to the masses these days....poor kids.
Wheelio Um, wtf are YOU talking about? Shitty music has always been around but it's in a celebrated abundance now a days...how can you call yourself a music fan and not see the difference? The 70's was the same as now music quality wise?....Because, no...it wasn't.

His point was that it doesn't matter what decade we're in because commercialized pop music has always been there from the beginning. But then again, not everyone is as open-minded as others. So saying things like "todays music sucks! 70s music was better!" is perfectly acceptable for those types of people.
Id seen the videos of cowboys from hell and cemetery gates but when vulgar came out my friend got it and we were driving in his old beat up truck and shitty stereo. He put that tape in and damn that was the best shit i had heard. I was a pantera fan from then on. Just straight bad ass
Philip Anselmo is an awesome bastard. He certainly did master the art of the Metal God Rob Halford. Non-believer's be directed to the last 30 seconds of Cemetery Gates. Or even Pantera's "Power Metal" years. (As much as P.H.A. would like to forget that era)...
Phil didnt disown Power metal He talked even few years ago to reissue the album. Maybe i am european so back then there werent chasing alternative sell out media crowd about old school heavy metal than the US , but i have an interview in 1997 , where he talk about every album he sang on and Power metal is the first on the list .
always loved that grungy heavy vocal and still able to be melodic. also liked that he could project heavy yet be legible. alot of dudes nowadays can do the gutteral screams an shiz but cannot show thru legibly. Perfect Hardcore Thrash Vocal!
i just watched a interview of phil when he was 24 and when i came here and heard how deep his talking voice has gotten i was like wow! all that smoking over the years has caught up!
i hade to fix this.// I'm from NYC and I was one the hardcore scene from the early 80's played in a band called Ultra Violence Agnostic front Vinny Stigma and Roger Miret are good friends of mine from back in the day, Vinny Stigma and Roger Miret
LOL I've recently become fond of this guy, & I've been watching videos of him all day, but this is the first one that told me where he was from or how old he is. I love how he talks; not just the deepness of his voice, but his little Louisiana accent. :)
It sucks they could not get it together. They were a really important metal band---they would have been one of the "Big Four," had they pulled their heads out of their asses. There would have been no need for a Damageplan, and Dime would still be setting the standard for metal guitarists the world over. RIP dude.
+Remmy 315 Split hairs with whatever terminology suits your argument, what the fuck ever. It was called the Big 4 not the Big Thrash 4. You make it sound as if Pantera would have been like a disco group on that bill. When in fact, Pantera had toured, and shared bills, hundreds of times with each of the Big 4 bands. "Mouth for War," sounds a whole lot closer to thrash metal than say," The Unforgiven." I'm a huge Metallica fan, and you ain't getting me to bite, that they have put out anything close to resembling thrash metal since, "And Justice for All." That's almost 30 years, by my count. The Big 4, was a representation of the form of the heavy metal community, that Pantera was a part of, not an exact definition given by the non-existent Websters dictionary of heavy metal genre monikers.
I met Dimebag Daryl at a Las Vegas Oz Fest, long ago. He was so laid back, friendly, gave my friend and I Heineken and we sat on a pallet by the busses and chatted. I didn't even know who he was at the time. I thought he was just another guy at the show. I was shocked when I heard of his murder.
Phill is the shit, he only looks way older than what he really is because his beard. He is only 45 and still a great performer so fuck those haters. Phills been through a lott of shit in his life and he still a cool dude.
@@steve4321able halford doesnt use. Phil didnt either in his real singing Have you listened the interview ? Or Do you really know how to hear and even sing that stuff close for open about it ? I do . And Phil is doing a shot falsetto just for show the difference that people mistake and by that , even a falsetto is thin , he is not getting that high in falsetto that the belting Notes he did .
Phil saw Motorhead in '83 or '84. He was in the midst of the metal/hardcore crossover. It's the reason why his bands are so diverse (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, Illegals, Necrophagia).
Wow! Is Phil slowly turning into Richard Kuklinski (The Iceman) 😱 Ha ha. The similarity in his appearance and mannerisms get closer the older he gets. Thankfully, Phil is one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet in spite of his intensity!
Awesome!! I’m the singer in a metal band out of Charlotte NC,Black Ritual (check us out on You Tube)and Phil Anselmo has and always will be one of my biggest influences as a front man

Phil is the man! He will always be one of the greatest heavy metal frontmen. I will always be a fan.
I agree!

And I am almost 60 and they are practically my favourite band. So it says something about them.
The correct quote would be...: _"This next song goes out to everyone who never gave up on fucking heavy music, ever."_ But yeah. ;)
Phil Anselmo is such a awesome guy... been through so many experiences and survived them all.

nothing better than story time with phil anselmo
I wish they'd make Phil into a Grand Theft Auto character.

LONG LIVE PHIL H. ANSELMO.
Thanks Phil. Excellent interview!
I grew up on pantera I've been listening to pantera since I was 3 years old
Phil is great, he can just keep talking and talking, and talking when it comes to music.
I wish I had Phil's voice.
That would be badass.
^You can get it, scream the hell out of you for three hours a day and drink whiskey instead of water or soda.
He'd have the deepest voice in the asylum!
What would you do with it?
Opiates
@@atticus666 his voice was deep even before he started using opiates.
Good interview, I respect Phil for being a very honest guy, to a fault at times! He has been through some shit and come out the other side.
I'm glad he brought the point up about Rob Halford not using falsesetto. Every time I read a short bio on Rob, they always say he uses it when he doesn't. Cool. :)
Because for people high = falsetto which is not necessary .
used to go see Phil sing in a band called Razor White all the time. He kicked ass even back the. Best front man on the local scene back then.
For a guy that's been to hell n back several times he's ticking along ok I guess can't deny his passion cheers phil
Pantera is the greatest band EVER!!!
Damn rite CFH4L Stronger Than All Getcha Pull
the 30 year olds are listening to PANTERA!!
would love to see him as an actor,he s such a movie
Seeing him live with Down at the Lincoln in Raleigh NC was probably the high light of my collective live show experiences. I spent 3 hours only feet from him. So much energy in one man, I was sincerely blown away by his stage presence. It was so powerful the way he feeds off the crowd's energy and vice versa.
I am tremendously happy that he has a stable life and has found some enlightment. The music world needs Phil. He keeps shit honest, to the core.
Phil should be a narrator of documentaries or something. His voice beats Morgan Freeman
He did for the Rigor Morris documentary. Check it out
...gave me chills listening to their experiences and learning from other bands.
PHIL! Please start doing Spoken Word/story telling tours. (Like Henry Rollins does)
People would love it. I'd be there FO SHO!
Hellyeah!! I could diff see that fosho😉
You got to love phil he is a sweetheart #lovephil #nohomo
Phil gives such interesting interviews. No vanity, just deep thought.
just seen him in st paul, hell of a good show
This is by far one of the best interviews Phil has done in a long time!
You da man Phil! Big fans make the best artists.
One of the best interviews I've heard from Phil
I saw Down in Pittsburgh the day this was posted!
Loved listening to him in this. One of the GOATS of metal vocals.
I love this guy, makes me feel happy he looks in good shape.. taking apart the beard hahaha
Best fucking frontman ever, in the pantera times...i never heard such terrifying screams and growls from any frontman ever then him
I also wanted to mention that in 1991 or 92 Pantera came to Montreal....at the time I was living in Canada and married...I knew that Pantera was coming to Montreal...t they were touring with Prong I was friends with Tommy the guitarist and singer he worked the door at the great CBGB/// I went to the show and Tommy brought me to the dressing room and I can say that I spoke and shook hands with the Great Dimebag Darrell...Phil was sitting there and he was pretty much in his own world..
Listen to him talk about the music that was around while he was growing up and compare it to the PC, sterilized, unchallenging horse that's being peddled to the masses these days....poor kids.
What the fuck are you talking about? Shitty music has been shoved down throats since the dawn of the music industry.
Wheelio Um, wtf are YOU talking about? Shitty music has always been around but it's in a celebrated abundance now a days...how can you call yourself a music fan and not see the difference? The 70's was the same as now music quality wise?....Because, no...it wasn't.

Edwin Yep, a lot of really great classics in your list! Don't know what your point is unless your driving Springfeeeels point further.
His point was that it doesn't matter what decade we're in because commercialized pop music has always been there from the beginning. But then again, not everyone is as open-minded as others. So saying things like "todays music sucks! 70s music was better!" is perfectly acceptable for those types of people.
Phil could of acted as Richard Kuklinski in the ice man with this look.
have
was thinking the same
Haaaahahahahaha...fuckin awesome....
I thought the same thing. Haha!
Haha that was immediately my first thought
I grew up with all the same shit that Phil is talking about here - that was the best era for Rock, Hardcore Punk, and Thrash Metal
Holy shit! He speaks more than 1 word every second!
Lol. He has been high in a lot of interviews. But he's also said that he has to think before saying anything cuz he gets misquoted so much on paper
Kiss was my first concert too. WASP opened
What a voice
Legend, always thinks long.. Before he talks!!
He's been to hell and back like most amazing artists.
Fuck. I love Phil.
that's not very brutal...
Id seen the videos of cowboys from hell and cemetery gates but when vulgar came out my friend got it and we were driving in his old beat up truck and shitty stereo. He put that tape in and damn that was the best shit i had heard. I was a pantera fan from then on. Just straight bad ass
phil, you're a goddamn genious
Philip Anselmo is an awesome bastard. He certainly did master the art of the Metal God Rob Halford. Non-believer's be directed to the last 30 seconds of Cemetery Gates. Or even Pantera's "Power Metal" years. (As much as P.H.A. would like to forget that era)...
In the Cowboys from Hell album you can hear how high Phil can actually go multiple times. Check out ''Message in Blood''.
"Shattered" as well.
Phil didnt disown Power metal
He talked even few years ago to reissue the album.
Perfect Hardcore Thrash Vocal!

i just watched a interview of phil when he was 24 and when i came here and heard how deep his talking voice has gotten i was like wow! all that smoking over the years has caught up!
fighting with truth smoking? Have you heard him sing?
I could listen to him all day, interesting guy.
i hade to fix this.// I'm from NYC and I was one the hardcore scene from the early 80's played in a band called Ultra Violence Agnostic front Vinny Stigma and Roger Miret are good friends of mine from back in the day, Vinny Stigma and Roger Miret
They are actually called "The Big Four of Thrash".
Love ya Phil Thank you for saving me brother move to Australia man
Always a legendary beast!
I was roommates with Steve Mcraney. He was a soundman for Pantera in the Dirty South. Connections.
He seriously gives the best fucking interviews
I met Dimebag Daryl at a Las Vegas Oz Fest, long ago. He was so laid back, friendly, gave my friend and I Heineken and we sat on a pallet by the busses and chatted. I didn't even know who he was at the time. I thought he was just another guy at the show. I was shocked when I heard of his murder.
After seeing this interview I realized when I saw him during Cowboys from Hell his attitude is totally hardcore he comes from that background
the power of the beard compels me
Phill is the shit, he only looks way older than what he really is because his beard. He is only 45 and still a great performer so fuck those haters. Phills been through a lott of shit in his life and he still a cool dude.
True heavy metal icon Amazing musician Extreme character Respect
Remember when Pantera sounded like KISS.... Early Pantera.

Anyone wonder phil's opinion on the band Tool
Ye
He probably doesn't like Tool
PHIL YOU MAY HAVE 100 YEARS, I STEEL LOVE YOU \m/
Phil, the metal brotherhood accepts you!
Phil saw Motorhead in '83 or '84. He was in the midst of the metal/hardcore crossover. It's the reason why his bands are so diverse (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual, Illegals, Necrophagia).
Inspiring .
Wow! Is Phil slowly turning into Richard Kuklinski (The Iceman) 😱 Ha ha. The similarity in his appearance and mannerisms get closer the older he gets. Thankfully, Phil is one of the nicest guys you could wish to meet in spite of his intensity!
BEAST
I wanna hear him talk about every single day in the life of Pantera. In full detail.
