70 MPH Illinois Central Death Star SD70 Leads Disabled Amtrak City of New Orleans 4-15-2024

- The locomotives on Amtrak's northbound City of New Orleans had some sort of mechanical or technical problem overnight on April 14, 2024 while traveling through Mississippi. With no other Amtrak units available to take over, Canadian National supplied former Illinois Central "Death Star" SD70 No. 1027, still in original paint, to pull the train the rest of the way to Chicago. This is likely the first (and possibly the last) time an IC-painted locomotive has pulled an Amtrak train since the CN/IC merger in 1999.

Arlo Guthrie would be proud.

And the Southern Central freight

I just imagine how symbolic it is for an IC loco to be pulling that route on those rails again. You know those engineers from 100 years ago are smiling down on that train today.
I don’t think so, if anything, they’d be smiling at CP 2816 high balling
@@NashRailfanHigh balling right into the back of some lady's skull 😬
@@NoThankYouNoName that’s the lady’s fault. Not like the train can stop on a fucking dime 😭
@@NashRailfanProbably would have helped to have some sort of crowd control at those packed grade crossings. Especially when most people have not been anywhere near a steam engine while running. CPKC isn't known for their safety though
@@NoThankYouNoName it’s hard to keep a crowd that large and long under control with how little authority KCS and CP have down there. It’s extremely difficult to. And besides the point, same shit happened to UP 844 and no one is making jokes about it like 2816.
All hail Arlo! Greatest train song ever!
@@BarnabasCollinsXIII Sadly, Steve Goodman passed away 40 years ago at age 36.
@@russellwall7265 Yes, thank you for posting that. I think of Mr. Goodman frequently because I live near the hospital where he was being treated when he passed away. It is said that he kept a sense of humor, such as we can see in some of his songs too. He was able to see some good things during his life. Others, he was still waiting for ... but that is something a Cubs fan learns to cope with.
I would love to hear Janis singing it! She did not do it.
Take a listen to Doug MacLeod's version of 'New Panama Limited'. worth a listen
@@pauloreilly3240 thank you. I will.
Nice video man! That's quite the observation, and I don't think anybody has seen an IC unit leading an Amtrak train before at all.
It has never happened despite the IC units being around for a long time. This might be the first and last time

I have seen it back in the 90s.

An Illinois Central unit pulling SC-44 Chargers on an Amtrak train in 2024? Amazing!
*ALC-42's
LOL! Amtrak's new power, that didn't take long!
TWO of them!!!
Lol ya. The newer power will never beat these good ol EMDS and GEs. Especially the F40s and P42s
IC is the only way to go
I rode that train in the 1980's and so much of Arlo's song rang true. An absolutely brilliant description of that era.
Me too ! Early 80’s 👍😁
I’ve ridden the Empire builder a few times over the last year. Whenever I ask Amtrak staff about the new Siemens locomotives, they never have anything good to say. The last guy a talk to, last weekend, called them junk. Said Amtrak is having to acquire old freight locos to pull the new Chargers around.
I hope they work out the wrinkles and get these new ones working reliably.
Makin' the right choice to help the Amtrak!
I used to ride that train to and from Champaign, IL, in my U•of•I days.
I saw this from my window the other day, pulled out the tracker to see this guy running a good 7 hours late due to it breaking down 💀
Folks, it's in Amtrak's contracts with the freight companies whose tracks they us. If they have a disablement of the Amtrak equipment, the freight company will lend a power unit. Happens out west with Union Pacific and BNSF occasionally.
And it's blocking the line, so they kinda have to get it out of the way.
Been a long times since an Illinois Central equipment has been seen.
@@SHOZ123that’s because they’ve mostly been up in Wisconsin and Michigan, and also Minnesota.
@@SHOZ123 They still use some IC units on freight trains. Canadian National has taken over the freight hauling but there are still some IC units that are still active and being used.
My uncle worked for the ICRR. He operated several of those units.
hell yeah! long live the IC
Nice catch with a great P5 horn. Also, that freight locomotive must have been maxed out at 70.
Good to see the Death Star stretching her legs.... Nice catch!
Not looking good for the Chargers
Insanity!! I heard about this but didn't know it'd actually be going passenger speeds. I don't think I've ever heard a new cast P5 at that kind of speed either
Great Catch!

It's like the CN takeover never happened...
Great catch! Thanks for sharing
🎶 Good mornin' America, how are ya 🎶
Say, don't you know me? I'm your native son!
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans,
Former CN railroader, engineer, conductor. That did NOT look like 70mph. Who has the radar gun?
So how fast?
That’s a solid 60 easily
That’s incredible!
Actually, an IC unit has led an Amtrak train before. Still a nice catch regardless.
Back in the F40 days(and sometimes P30ch, we used to get into Chicago quite often behind IC power, it seemed
Great catch 🖤🤍
That's incredible
As the son of a Chicago suburb Trainman, Peotone was a regular stop on Summer weekend daytrips.
Wait a minute. TWO virtually new locomotives and they BOTH broke down?
They sure don't make them like they used to...
If one is running, all that HEP load will severely limit acceleration and limit hill-climbing ability. While Metra have put as many as 11 gallery cars behind a single F40PH, the acceleration is sluggish and they are run like this on limited-stop trains only as a result. Local trains that are 11-12 cars during rush hour alway have two units.
@@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis Interesting. Thanks.
Only 7 cars?? Not much Head End Power required. One of those Siemens could do that. So again, how did Amtrak lose 2 locomotives on the same train?
Just witnessed the 1027 leading a WB freight at Griffith, IL.
70
Mph is better than sitting still
I've never seen that before! Thank you for the video!
Welded rail is astoundingly quiet. One doesn't have long to wait when the train passes at 70 MPH -113 KPH!
Beautiful P-5!
Those Chargers are very touchy. Was on Empire Builder when a fuel additive level got low, and protocol from Siemens required the engine to be shut down (not sure why, probably warranty would be voided otherwise). We were less than 1 hour into terminal destination (Chicago).
Why can’t the crews of Amtrak just keep the “fuel additive level” with their regular maintenance?
Probably emissions certification related
Fuel additive. You could be talking about DEF. Emissions related. This was added to highway trucks many years ago and now these days I’m seeing it on diesel locomotives too
AMTRAK My Favorite One
Saw that while driving to work near Tolono, IL. Thought it was really odd and then saw rail fans taking pictures/video at two different crossings I went by.

ILLINOIS CENTRAL, MONDAY MORNIN RAIL!!! 🎶
Man I would've thought CN would have repainted those IC units by now. Glad they haven't 😉
I think it's a "heritage unit". If companies don't use old logos or designs they become public domain after a number of years.
@@TheMrPeteChannelthese aren’t heritage units, they just haven’t been repainted
CN acquired IC in 1999, the same year this locomotive was built. It was pretty common to see Seaboard System and Chessie locomotives on CSX trains well into the late ‘90s, a full decade after their merger. The predecessor railroads would paint their new locomotives in their own paint all the way up until the date of the merger. Even though the merger had been in the works for years, each railroad kept turning out locomotives in their own colors. And since it doesn’t make too much sense to repaint a new locomotive, they roll with it for a few years. 25 years is a long time, though; also, the fact that 1999 was 25 years ago makes me feel pretty old…
The opposite of this would be the “Kodachrome SPSF” locomotives from the ‘80s, when Southern Pacific and Santa Fe were trying to merge. That ended up not happening, but if it had, they already had locomotives wearing the paint.
I guess I was most shocked that they made a standard cab locomotive in 1999. Great video.
@@michaeljohnson7493 I think ICs would be the only standard-cab SD70s left, as didn't NS replace the cabs on theirs and rebuild them?
Cool well done!
IC used some SD40As on the CONO, although some fans thought they were SDP45s, they just looked the same, but there was no steam generator, just the longer fuel tanks. I do not think I still have pictures like that from my college days in the early 80's. Amtrak, cheaper than the bus.
In what world does an SD40A look like an SDP45?
Thats is awsome. Great catch
"Riding on the city of New Orleans, Illinois Central, monday morning rail....'
>Chargers leading
Well I see the issue
That’s rare
Illinois Central, Monday morning rail.
Does my heart good to see the ghost of Casey Jones highballing again........there are a few of these units and some EJ&E power hanging out in the Joliet yard, see them often, but THIS is how they SHOULD be seen...
It takes a good set of tracks to be able to run that speed.
Love me some trains!
The 100mph, glorious orange and brown version will never be topped.
So, who operates the train CN/IC engineers? Amtrak engineers, or both?
It happens more often than you think. In the past, I have been lucky enough to see Norfolk Southern locomotives leading the Carolinian and Crescent due to faulty Amtrak locomotives. On the Crescent the Amtrak locomotives had to be left in Charlotte to be repaired. Due to that and other issues it ended up being over 12 hours late to it's final stop in New York City.
Ironic that a twenty-five-year-old locomotive had to bail out a pair that aren’t even two years old.
Actually, I thought the locomotive would be painted like the Death Star in Star Wars.
312 and 326 were both finished in 2022
Hmm. Cool. Wondering who drove the SD70? A track engineer or CN engineer?
Amtrak engineers _are_ CN engineers, at least here.
Wicked catch!
Out with the New and In with The Old = Love It!
Hoods on passenger trains rule ok 👍
The US doesn't need HSR since Amtrak has locomotives that can run over 200 mph.
I see those new Siemens engines are continuing to prove that they’re pieces of crap, given they’re being towed by an SD70 here. Amtrak had better hold onto their GE P42s a while longer.
nothing man made is perfect - things break. They're still just working out the kinks.....give it time and everyone will be praising the Chargers like they do the P42s.
The way it used to be.
Once it gets to chicago it’ll be on centrals old line 😄
Superliner transition sleeper dorm car on the rear.
uh Amtrak locomotives what are you doing?
That's clearly an IC train leading by an IC unit and you're clearly unwanted.
Where are we here??
Where shot?
Nice. Not really a huge Amtrak fan but I definitely would have enjoyed seeing that live. Great P5 horn.
Need metra to buy that shes get the legs for it
What Kind Of SD70 Is That? It Looks Like An SD40-2 Or A Geep
That's the standard cab version, they don't make SD70s like that anymore
I wonder when AMTRAK will start doing like the rest of the world and go with head/tail power arrangement.
Did that white industrial building behind the red convertible once have a spur track?
Possibly
They might’ve. Of course it Doesn’t now. Long gone. As the train is coming, you can see a signal that protects the 11000 ft siding there. As the train is leaving town, there is an old industrial spur on the left. I had to set a car out on it once. Bad order car.
goofy ahh superliner at the end
I saw no Death Star.
Look at the logo on the front of the train, it looks just like the Deathstar! The dot for the “i” being the laser canon.
The Siemens Chargers are JUNK compared to the GE P42. Yes, they are worn out but WAYYYY more reliable. At this point, AMTRAK would do better to use ES44AC diesel as the lead on their trains until Siemens gets their act together.
Wait, why is an IC loco still kicking around?
Hauling the mail,, damm..
Ahh, Pee A Ton.
Those Chargers must be crap
From WC, Wow 70 miles an hour, I hope it didn’t fly off the tracks! Oh wait passenger trains in Germany do over 200 miles an hour! Never mind!
Yeah, but those passenger trains in Germany are not being pulled by a freight locomotive...
Amtrak no track
That's not 70 mph
???
7 cars and 7 restless riders
3 conductors and maybe one sack of mail
Oops.
30 mph at best !
Heh. Little faster than THAT. The size makes it look deceptive.
