Gold Tone CC Carlin 12 - Banjo Review

  • Just thought I'd share my two cents on this instrument.
    What I like about the banjo
    1) It's a good looker
    2) It has a very warm tone
    3) The wide nut makes clawhammer playing easier
    4) It comes with heavy gauage .11 strings which resonante very well with the banjo
    5) The bone nut with the zero fret makes for nice action at the first fret
    6) There is no other banjo on the market with a 12 inch pot, scooped neck and brass tone ring for such an economic price
    What I dislike about the banjo
    1) The Chrome hardware seems shabby
    2) The frets are a little high which makes the strings make a scratching sound
    3) The guitar style tuners are plan ugly
    4) It's difficult to find strings with he same gauge as this came with. I'm now using .10's and the sound isn't the same
    5) Being 6ft 3ish/ 193cm it's quite difficult to play at the scoop as the banjo's pot is so wide, i can imagine for smaller people than me it's be totally unconfortable. so if you're small, go for an 11 inch banjo like the Goldtone CB 100

    The double coordinator rods are to keep the rim round, not allowing it to "egg" under string tension. Two master banjo setup guys taught me about that. I messed up a rim thinking to adjust the action with the rods.

Though my life changed a bit and I didn't play on it for a while now but it's hangin on my living room wall in order to remind me to exercise again. Luckily musical instruments are timeless and I will still be able to play on it many years from now. Being irish would maybe help, haha. Having such a vivid music culture would be benefitial for sure.

    Thank you for your review; I found it very helpful. I was interested in your comment no.5 in your dislikes. I'm 159cm tall (5ft 3-ish) with small hands, and play a Vega Vintage Star, which has a 12" pot (it's a wonderful banjo, by-the-way). I have no problems playing a 12" or playing at the scoop. I don't think it's size that determines whether you find a 12" pot comfortable to play, but body proportions. My reservations about the Goldtone is the nut width (viz. the small hands) - need to get hold of one and audition it, because it's very good value.

    • @ryanrelater
      @ryanrelater  2 роки тому

      Hi. Thanks for your comment.
      I suppose i was used to playing a very cheap banjo which was an 11inch very thin pot
      Changing to the goldtone was a bit of a challenge. I'm tall but my arms aren't super long for my height so i think you hit the nail on the head about the body proportions. I'm sure this banjo is nowhere near as nice as a vintage star but It sings great for it's price
      I think a dobson tone ring in this banjo would be a beaut of an upgrade.

      The Carlin 12 is definitely worth every penny you pay for. It's a solid professional level instrument.
      I havent played the CB100 but i can tell by looking at It that it's in the category of "i'll get rid of this in two years" whereas the Carlin 12 seems to be a real keeper

      I couldn't order from Goldtone because the shopping fees were too high to get It to Spain. I really wanted the planetary tuners too.
      The guitar tuners are decent tho. It stays in tune pretty well.
      The only adjustment i've made to the banjo is putting a grover Bridge on It which gave It a bit more volume and intonation stability

      @@ryanrelater Yea had a chat with Gold Tone about it. $40 for FedEx delivery seemed a bit steep on a few strings! Said they’d do regular US post if I was interested in that. Quoted $20 postage on 5 packs for instance.
      Meanwhile I looked around a bit more and it looks like Eagle Music in the UK will make up custom sets and there’s Newtone Strings in the UK too. They make custom sets to order, forgot about them, had guitar strings off them in the past. Price isn’t much different to Gold Tone and the postage is a heck of a lot cheaper! Once I get the Carlin and check it over I’ll probably order some from one or the other.

    • @ryanrelater
      @ryanrelater  2 місяці тому

      Hey, thanks, I haven't played bluegrass style, however, any open back banjo can be played with picks. The only difference is the tone. A resonator on the body just makes the banjo louder with more attack. But if you're playing at home alone this wouldn't really matter.
      If you fancy playing both Clawhammer and bluegrass style just buy a banjo that has a removable resonator, best of both worlds

    Hey Ryan, hope you're doing fine. Do you have an opinion about the nut width of the banjo? I read that it is wider than standard, which is nice. have you been playing on other banjos with a more narrow nut width and can compare them to the CC Carlon 12? Is playing the banjo easier when the nut is wider?
    thanks in advance, have a good one!

    • @ryanrelater
      @ryanrelater  3 роки тому

      Hey! I used to play a very cheap open back banjo that came as a bluegrass style banjo and It had a super thin neck.
      The CC has a much wider neck which in the beginning was strange but now i can't play my old banjo very well as the neck is so thin.
      I imagine that the wider nut is better in general for clawhammer as most expensive banjo from 'pisgah' and Ozark by Lukas pool Also have fat widths at the nut.
      I'll defo stock with a wide neck/nut in future
