His other video on it introduced me to the awesome band T-SQUARE and I learned about and interesting instrument, so I definitely didn't regret watching those two videos.
Only took me five years to learn how to say Carlos's last name. I always thought it was pronounced "Eye-n". Now I know it's "Ee-nee". ...unless he was purposefully saying it weird to pronounce it like ewi.

Oh my god I have been playing the clarinet for like maybe 16 years and only NOW found out about EWIs. Thank you so much for this video, I am pretty close to just buying the SOLO now. I need this so bad!
Dayna Stephens here, love your videos! I think we should gather a list of EWI players that want the 5500s or 6000s or EWI Supreme or EWI MAX. We all know the list would be long. The loss of midi out and inability to load Patchman sounds is always a deal breaker for me, really being able to shape ones own sound is most important at the end of the day.
I love how you wore a shirt that defined what an ewi was, I don't know if you defined it because I skipped the intro, but my question was instantly answered when I saw your shirt
#12 Truth definitely sounds like one of the sound settings Takeshi Ito uses for TRUTH, though I believe he's used at least 4 or 5 slightly different ones throughout performances. The original TRUTH was played using the Lyricon. One can even find the original music video from 1987 on UA-cam where he's shown carrying just the controller part of the Lyricon into the studio. #190 Retro Wind sounds like one of the versions of Omens of Love (from 一夜限りのFANTASTIC SQUARE LIVE), though again there are quite a few versions. #200 T-Island doesn't sound quite as close to the original. (T-Square fan passing by...)
This EWI Solo seems pretty cool for beginners who want to avoid the hassle of managing the EWI USB. Nice comparison. Two points of camera view was a great idea, it really feels like an interview. Thanks for the great insights and sound examples. I was obviously able to recognize Ghibli themes. But also the Miles solo from So What somewhere around 3:15. Ah, and African Skies of course. Those 4000S sounds are .... so fat. The Fluegelhorn lower register sounds so good.
I would argue that it's designed for performers who need an instrument that's good for both practicing and performing. You can use the built in sounds and speaker to practice, and then when you need to perform you'll be plugging it in anyway, so why not use it as a midi controller and plug in your own, better, sounds? That way you have a convenient practice instrument that is identical to your performance instrument without compromising on either.
That hassle you mention with the usb one, is it just connecting it to a pc and run a sound plugin? I've never worked with this kind of thing but it doesn't sound that hard. Plus, will any sound plugin run well with this? I don't understand the talk of bad sounds when one can get any sound running on a computer
Enjoyed your video. I was a sax and flute player for many years and finally quit playing, but I had seen that video back in the 80's that Michael Brecker did with the Steinerphone which really blew me away. Soooo... I'm sitting around the house being bored to death and, after some investigation etc. I bought a Yamaha WX5 from Matt Traum at Patchman Music along with the turbochip with all those sounds on bank two. Those guitar sounds! I bought a small PA from a friend of mine and should get my WX5 within a week. I can hardly wait. I've always admired the sort of things that David Gilmour, Scott Henderson, and other guys with huge sounds do on their guitars. I think it's probably not possible to entirely duplicate that sort of playing, but I think I'll have a great time . Plus there's a bunch of other cool sounds to play with on that soundbank. Thanks for your informative videos!

great review finally a review made by someone who actually knows the ewi! i was wondering, if you don´t have the upper bend plate how do you bend notes up now?
A workaround would be to use the glide plate with your left thumb and slide up by manually playing a higher note. It would be different compared to just using the pb plate but I don't think it would be too hard to incorporate into your playing.
I'd probably use the glide plate and manually slide up! Bending down is so much more natural to most wind players, so I'm glad the bend down plate is still there.
Hope they bring back the pitch up plate to future ewi models!!Awesome t-shirt bro gonna get one ordered to the UK for Christmas for sure, props for that great idea. Also since my 5000 is nearing the end of its life I've been Contemplating getting a new 4000s instead you've helped finalise that decision for me as now I had a new ewi competing but deep down I could see its one for me to skip like the ewi-usb.

You are a very good musician ! 👏🏻 I own 2 controlers : the Ewi 5000 and the Aodyo Sylphyo. For me, the sounds of the 5000 are not good enough to play in public. I’m with you on “peak EWI” - I’ve owned and played all the WX Yamahas, have an EWI5000 & EWI USB and an Aerophone 10. Of the two with onboard sounds, the EWI5000 patches are just plain lame. I love the feel and playability of the 5000, but the sounds suck and Matt can’t make patches for it. You have to also either set it up specifically to play it's internal patches or set it up for USB -- but it can't do both simultaneously without unacceptable compromises. The Aerophone has much, much, much better sounds, and fingers fine, but the instrument is lightweight plastic with cattery keys. Of the two, I have to go with the AE-10 for the sounds - until peak EWI comes out. BTW: Great review!
I suggest you donate this to a hunched homeless person from Japan. They will spend all of their time on it, eventually surpassing anyone in this craft. They will travel the world, studying the EWI all over and eventually playing for giant crowds too. While popular in many genres, the now world-famous EWI player will be most popular for their late Baroque works. Their newly acquired wealth might mean that they take some time to reflect, they might find out that they like playing for the other team. One day, you will visit them in their new mansion, situated just west of Benin on a river banking. They will open the door wearing a polo shirt. Happy with the good deed you did all those years ago, you ask for just a single picture. Then, after all those years, you will finally have the photo of the virtuoso homo rococo robo-oboe quasimodo hobo from Kyoto in a polo in Togo on the Mono.
I really appreciate the info and demonstration. I do not however agree with your comments about emulation of real instruments being a negative. Some of us old guys with limited practice time and no resemblance of an embouchure like to plug in a good sounding sax synth and sit in with friends or church band pretending we really sound like that. Again thanks for your thoughts and going to the trouble of presenting them to us. Editing and producing video is plenty of work in itself!
Nice review. Akai keeps missing the boat yet again. The killer feature for professionals would be wireless midi. Then the player could access all the great sounds and plugin synths sounds available for any DAW. The performer would have mobility like all the guitar players have today. Wireless audio is limiting since you would only have the few Akai sounds. The ewi is already the best playing wind controller. Wireless midi would make the ewi a more complete solution and by far the best. Minimally at least Bluetooth ble midi (like the Kong microkey) would be useful and a step ahead. Sad that Akai has again missed the opportunity to make Ewi the best platform for instrumentalists and studio players.
MIDI over bluetooth doesn’t work reliably. Especially in concerts as everybody’s phones interfere. Plus you systematically introduce 30 mill-sec of delay. Doesn’t work.
Okay, now that I've heard you playing some Ghibli tunes on those EWIs... I'm gonna need some dedicated covers. Carlos + Ghibli sounds like a perfect mix.
This is really awesome! I’m not a sax player but I do enjoy the new technology. I don’t expect a synth to sound like a traditional instrument. It’s like expecting cgi to look like real life. Or a robot to act natural.
I was super excited about this, until I thought through the built-in speaker and realised it would never be good for what I would use it for... So I bought a Sylphyo, and I am pretty much in love with the thing, although the EWI octave rollers are still the best solution for that side of things - the Sylphyo's octave pad spacing is a bit too big IMO.
VERY useful review for me as an EWI4000S player. I think the SWAM VSTs are the way to get realistic acoustic sounds from an EWI. To your point the onboard acoustics just sound bad, like an old school hand-held video game or worse. Thank you!
Thanks so much for this most informative review and comparison of the other Akai EWI models. I'm a flute player who recently tried a Roland Aerophone AE-01, but found the sounds deficient, especially the ones purporting to emulate real wind instruments (though the clarinet wasn't too horrible). After watching this vid, I'm leaning toward agreeing with you that EWIs are mainly valuable for their synth sounds. It also appears to me that the screen on the back of the Akai Solo is a huge step forward. Trying to change sounds and settings on the Roland is laborious since the only way you can tell what instrument or other setting you've selected is via a series of beeps. Annoying! Would love to see Akai come up with a model that encompassed all the best features from all their EWIs that you mentioned. Thanks for your review(s). I see a Bay Area screensaver behind you, do you live and play in the Bay Area? Would love to see/hear you play. Anything on UA-cam? Thanks again.
thank you so much for this video :) I just stumbled upon Ewis. My Ocarina is INSANELY loud and I can't really practice at home because of it. This would be a great Alternative
I've been trying to get those T H I C C T-Square EWI sounds for a long time now. Are the EWI 4000s Patchman music sounds the place to go for all of my "Shredding on Truth" needs?
Hi great review, here's a question ,if the 4000s just had it's stock sounds,no patchman, then which ewi would you choose out of the solo,4000 and the 5000?
Hey Carlos, out of curiosity have you ever messed around with humming into your EWIs? I've discovered that the EWI4000 breath sensor is so fast that humming modulates the sound in a very obvious way. It's actually to the point that you can change the perceived note and octave without moving your fingers (depending on the harmonic relation between the note you hum and the note you finger you can also get a range of timbres including a timbre reminiscent of a distorted guitar)
Great video and love the shirt :-) Question, in the video when you play the 4000s ->the patchman #65, what is it you do to make the sound you make at 8:34-8:35 (sorry don't know how to explain/ask otherwise haha). THANKS!!

This would be a great Alternative
great info. Have been looking for this.
When he said "the ultimate machine" and "EWI 6000" my mind shot straight to terminator
I've been trying to get those T H I C C T-Square EWI sounds for a long time now. Are the EWI 4000s Patchman music sounds the place to go for all of my "Shredding on Truth" needs?
Which version of the AKAI EWI should I buy a total beginner, I'm still a bit lost after your video 😅 I also think that the Solo sound is less good.
You can probably get a USB MIDI Host Interface box and semi-rack mount the EWI 4000. Great video, by the way!!!
What’s the best EWI for a clarinet player? I play sax too, but I wonder if any models are catered to clarinet fingering. It’s the same, but different.
Great video and love the shirt :-)
Question, in the video when you play the 4000s ->the patchman #65, what is it you do to make the sound you make at 8:34-8:35 (sorry don't know how to explain/ask otherwise haha).
THANKS!!
Fluttertonguing! Achieves a sound on the EWI similar to growling. I'm just lightly rolling my r's in the top back area of my mouth
@@insaneintherainmusic Wow, going to try that :-) Thanks again!!
I got the EWI solo now but its coming in February but this is awesome
I recognize the first few tunes:
Donna Lee
Jupiter
Solo from Autumn leaves
I don’t know
Spain? Some flute solo obviously
Promotes a instrument for potential customers and doesn't monetize video. NOW THATS RESPECT.
My school has an EWI club and we have like 6 4000s and 2 5000s
wtf thats so based
Siiiiiiick
Looking to get one of these to trigger SWAM VST's. Great review! Thank you so much for posting. Love to hear flute players and SWAM users to chime in.
Merci beaucoup l'Ami !!!!
EWI 😱 Forget it, I have played these guys for years, and then the Roland AE30 Pro arrived ! Now that is really what it's about.
I really want to try one of those too!
i fell in love when i heard the synths
