I was watching your video about Todd Snider, and during the part where you were disremembering towns and diner names, you mentioned something about road experiences and memory and whatnot.
I wondered-do you keep a journal? I almost always do when I travel, to be sure and remember what details I can about experiences good and bad and middling. Those long drives, Otis-you have the time when you're not doing the driving. Or in the evening after you arrive and sound check, or just crammed in anytime you have a minute. Anything works, from a 3-ring binder and school ruled paper, to a fancy blank book, or a yellow tablet. Doesn't matter.
You can condense good stuff into notes for later videos, and I can all but guarantee there will be songs in there. Anyroad, just a thought.
PS-Thanks for the heads up on the Owl Diner. It looks like my kind of place.

I met Todd before I knew who he was. I was working a horrible job managing a business center at a Marriott in Portland OR. He came in to use the internet. Nice guy, super courteous. Later that evening - much to my surprise - there he was up on stage (he's local to Portland). He won me over with just that one show. Last time I saw him, he was opening for Prine. Great show. Awesome story teller/performer.

Thank you for bringing up Doug Sahm and having folks on your show , talking about Doug . He was a rare breed and like Blaze and Towns is never really given credit . If folks look up Sahms blues 50s album, it will blow you away and the blues band behind him....This guy could play everything . Thanks we love you OTIS for your show and love the stories .

I am not cut from the cloth as you and Todd but really appreciate your art and really appreciate your poetry and commentary. You both make us think and take notice. Keep it up with your UA-cam stories. Loved your conversations with Kenny Vaughn. This led me to Lucinda Williams. Thank you Otis…much love!

Love Todd. Seen him many times and no matter how many times I hear his stories I still get a kick out of them. Got to meet him several years ago. I have been introduced to so many other artists through Todd. His Purple Building sessions during the pandemic were a bright spot for me.

I learned a long time ago that if you at least attempt to connect with your crowd wherever you might be gigging, most of them appreciate it and will be more open to listening. Todd’s story about the tackle box kills me. I still meet grown people that either don’t know John Prine or recently discovered him. I feel very lucky to have got his first album when it was new and made it a point to see him whenever he came within driving distance.

I've been listening to John Prine since I was 11 years old. I'm 62 now. Saw him in concert for the first time when I was in college and saw many more of his shows over the years. Saw him in concert in Charlottesville the day after Steve Goodman died - I'll never forget the stories and the emotion. He said he almost canceled because of Goodman's death, but knew that Goodman would want him to go on stage. Was going to see Todd Snider for the first time at Pappy & Harriet's this year, but I got called for jury duty and couldn't travel. Maybe next time. Love your YT channel, Otis, thank you for sharing your stories with the world.

Steve Goodman’s “Looking for Trouble” has been part of my set for a long time. I bet Todd would have been great at Pappy’s. We’ve been there many times while visiting JT national park and attending some events at P&H (mostly Camper Van B and Cracker) and I even got to play there once. I was sad that it changed hands. Just not quite the same now but I guess nothing is.

I would describe "theTodd Snider experience" as that feeling you get after spending an entire evening catching up with your dearest friend that you don't get to see often enough anymore. The laughter is genuine. There is an intimacy that comes from getting to relive a shared experience with someone, and when Todd tells a story, it doesn't just feel like you were there. That story becomes a part of you too. There's a comfort that's only found in sharing an inside joke. That's who Todd is. He is Nostalgia reincarnate. It doesn't matter if it's your first Todd show or your 50th, you'll walk away from it knowing exactly what I mean.
    Disclaimer:
There's also a good chance you'll end up with a new appreciation for bananas, as well as a sudden aversion to doors. It's a fair trade.

Otis, I have tickets to see Todd locally this month. I was thrilled to learn when buying the tickets that opening for him is Tommy Prine. I'll see Paul Thorn for my 3rd time this Friday at the same theatre. I feel so fortunate to get to see all of these artists.
Jerry Jeff Walker was a big influence from when I went to deer camp with my dad in the Pennsylvania mountains as a kid. I wanted to see Jerry Jeff before he passed. Jason Isbell made his dissatisfaction known when the CMT awards did not acknowledge John Prine's and Jerry Jeff's passing during the COVID months.
The chance to see Todd and Tommy play on the same stage in the same night will be a gift. Life is tough. Music makes it better. These men will be a true pleasure to see perform. Having not gotten the chance to see Jerry Jeff or John Prime perform live is my loss. Seeing Todd and Tommy will feel like a chance to connect with those guys.
If I get a chance to talk to communicate with Todd, I'll tell him Otis sent me!

This will go to the top as my favorite Otis Gibbs visit. Snider, Thorn, Carll and Prine - storytellers with a message. Spot on Mr. Gibbs. They all happen to be my favorites. I might add Tom Russell and Michael Reno Harrell. I do house concerts and the "storytellers with a message" go to the top of the list of those that I want to have for my audiences. I may not be able to promote any of those guys but I'm always on the lookout for those with the unique talent of telling a story - one that goes somewhere. Michael Reno Harrell will bless my little venue February 26th in Sun City Texas. I can't wait.

Another great clip Otis! Thanks. Agreed-Todd is a singular talent-I've only seen him once and have but one early CD but he's in that next gen of performers/songwriters/characters-like Hayes Carlle.
I'll look for the Doug Sahm documentary. I'd met him several times, burned one with him and saw him dozens of times. He was the first artist I saw live in a bar in Austin way back around 75. Had the West Side Horns with him and I was sold. I'd proposed putting together a Doug Sahm box set to Clifford Antone sometime after we sat together at Doug's funeral in 1999. Since Clifford also owned Antone's records then and at the time it was a viable label I started organizing a project plan around the concept. And then Clifford's big heart also gave out and I no longer pursued the idea. Glad to see some of my favorite artists are getting the docu treatment-Doug, James Booker, Blaze, Guy Clarke etc. We need one on John Prine I believe.

Afterthought: Bout twenty plus years ago I think I was trying to emulate Todd, John, and Steve Earle all at the same time :) I was sometimes “that guy” who would fill in for a few acoustic songs while a local band was on break (there’s a Todd Snider cover on my channel)

Quick Prine tale - good friends of mine are all cousins to John, living here in Salt Lake City area. Many years ago, I attended an SLC show with my friends; they asked if I wanted to join them to chat with John after the show. It was so cool to observe him interacting with his extended family, asking after everyone and every little bit of info he could glean about his extended family. I wound up standing next to him at one time, and recanted that I had grown up in suburban Chicagoland. I asked him if he recalled a venue called Harry Hope’s, which was an abandoned ski chalet, and sat directly behind my house. It was a low key, but vibrant stop for many in the mid to late 1970’s. He began to tell me about him and Goodman getting lost on the way out there from the city, and how they went into a local bar to ask for directions, “ big Fella named Fran left the bar, and led us in his car to the show”. Blew my mind, as everyone in my town knew Fran, and Fran didn’t like any of them. But he must of left an impression on Prine, and vice versa.

The best thing I ever did for my live set was take a note from Todd after reading his book, binging his shows and emerging myself in his world. I sat down and wrote a story, with a possible punchline, for every song in my set. Much like Todd, I may not say that story every time, and have even started improvising stories that lead to the same punchline and song. While Im admittedly nowhere near as good at it as Todd, but it sure has helped to make stronger connections with the audience. Hope you're doing well Otis.

Hi, just over the last few days I been watching lots of your videos, maybe not in the best place I've ever been, but I got to say thanks for putting me onto artists I've never heard of, especially blaze, 🇨🇮😘😘

I, too, would love to see a show with you opening for Todd. Prine was a national treasure, but I only got to see him a couple of times live. I've probably seen Todd and James more than any other artists simply because they come to Bloomington often. Neither ever disappoints. But you are right about James. Not chatty on stage. However, he does seem to have mellowed over the past few years and spends time with the crowd after his set. As much as I love all these guys, James is, to my mind, the greatest songwriter of his generarion.

Look up Seanchai, Irish for Storyteller. Seanchaithe (pural) would travel from village to village in Ireland and tell stories its a very old tradition. There's a fictional book called Ireland by Frank Delaney that is about a seanchai that travels and tells different stories based on the region he is in, really great book that gives a great presceptive on the tradition.

Here in Kansas City, Missouri we have BOB WALKENHORST, who was/is the lead singer songwriter for the Rainmakers. I've seen Bob completely mesmerize audiences with just his acoustic guitar. I know personally that this is very hard to do, but Bob makes it look easy like he was born for it.

Otis, thanks for coming to Madison! You’re opening set was great. As I mentioned when I shook your hand, I would not have gone if I hadn’t seen your name on the marquee! (& I won’t ask you to be on my morning radio show). The night before, also at the Barrymore theatre, The Wolf Brothers played. Their opening act, Steve Poltz was a wonderful storyteller in the tradition you mention. Long tales that are funny and poignant told inside the song!

Lyle Lovett can tell a good story and a lot of his music is story songs in my opinion. Good story by him on NPR tiny desk. I appreciate what you do , thinking it’s God’s work during these trying times. Missing the old days when you could be free and people didn’t screw with you.

I first heard of Todd Snider off of the Bob and Tom show, when he wrote Beer Run. I drove long haul trucks and that was one of the songs I dug listening to. And that radio show was one that I tried to listen to every day. Funny funny stuff. But back in 86' I saw John Prine open up for Arlo Guthrie. As far as I am concerned, Prine took the show. He was, like you said, a great storyteller.

I first saw Hayes Carll when he was opening for the Old '97s. At first I was... skeptical of his talking to the audience, but as the set progressed I came to appreciate how good he was at it. He's told a story or two each of the times I've seen him headlining with a band behind him. He told a lot of stories during his weekly live streams during the depths of the pandemic.
John Cragie is in his 30s, I think. From what I've seen of his shows on UA-cam he tells a good story, in fact, he's got one about almost stealing weed from Todd Snider, or was that a song? It's a song, with a few lines about John Prine, too.

I actually heard of Todd long before you, Otis, no offense intended lol. I love your channel and stories and music now that I've discovered you. I think Springsteen is another great story teller as well as being able to tell a masterful story in the song. Thanks for all you do, hope to catch you live sometime!
