  • I hope you will enjoy this mini-series of videos featuring an epic motorcycle riding holiday in Eastern Oregon. There were 8 of us on the trip on mostly modern bikes.. well modern to me! We rode about 950 miles from Portland Oregon through Estacada heading due east to Sumpter, Oregon. We rode through some incredible scenes that I hope you will enjoy and stayed overnight in some nice little motels in country towns & villages. It was a blast riding the 2001 VTR1000 Honda Super Hawk 996 "Firestorm"!

You certainly live in a beautiful part of the world, Mike.
I'm an avid follower of your channel as I own a 1969 Norton Commando Fastback and also a 1958 Velocette Venom.
Potholes!!! Here in the UK and in Devon where I live many of the potholes that plague our 'roads' have been re-classified as reservoirs.

Mike, beautiful country you’re riding in. I love the fact that you ride at your own pace. I’ve seen way too many riders that ride beyond their capabilities trying to catch up. Know your destination and ride at your own pace is my motto.

Thanks for the ride down memory lane. Raised in Oregon, I spent countless weekends on the Clackamas River camping and fishing. Recognizing much of the road during the early part of the video brought back very fond memories for this graybeard.
As a motorcyclist, the ride looks fantastic. Should I ever get back to Oregon, this is a ride I’ll do.

Central and Eastern Oregon are pretty wonderful on two wheels. My only complaint about the roads out there is the liberal use of chipseal. Ick. We rode 20 miles through fresh chipseal up toward Heppner, with drifts of loose gravel every where. I have permanent tar in my riding pants from riding through an active chipseal application out by John Day.

Yes, I know what you mean. We also picked up quite a bit on the roads. I did not like the gravel on the corners at all! Thanks a lot for your note. Best wishes, Mike

Saw a guy lose his transmission and engine on an SV 650 due to chip seal buildup on his chain.

I'd ridden "Classics" from 1967 to 2003. But in 2003 I got my first modern bike and I must say the great competence of modern bikes is a joy.

Superb scenery Mike , what a great ride .Local-roads where I live (rural) are very-similar , a lot of the forests have been 'logged' lately though .Most of the Firestorms of that vintage have been thrashed-to-death in this part of the world , good ones are climbing rapidly in value I notice . Does Pam still have her W650 ? Perfect-bike for that kind of jaunt , it's a mad Winters-day where I am , rain ,wind then hot sunshine all in the space of an hour.... . Dave nz

Not sure how they class the bikes over in Oregon Mike here in New Zealand a 2001 bike would be a classic I have a 2003 Triumph Bonneville 790cc and that's classed as a classic here still when you think about it a bike that's 23 years old is getting up there in age love your channel keep it up I have a couple of videos up I'm looking at doing what you do just have to figure out how to edit and things ....that's where my 16 year old son comes in lol cheers Gary

You're absolutely right! I still think of my 97 Firestorm as my new bike and I bought it in January 2000! I fitted a set of raised flat bars that make it much more comfortable to ride. Fabulous engine, there always seems to be another gear available.

Top notch scenery Mike, I could almost smell the pine trees! 👍 I can relate on the old bike as my 2006 BMW R12ST has been the oldest bike on some of my local rides of late. Thanks for posting!

Nice relaxing ride out Mike. I’ve got a 2001 Honda VFR V-tech and love it….don’t all the ‘tech’ that modern bikes have to enjoy riding! Enjoyed the different type of video …but maybe could be improved by including places of interest, biker cafes, scenic stops etc.
If you get the chance it’d be good to hear your opinion of a similar age VFR to your Firestorm. Ride safe from Cambridge UK 🇬🇧

If while I was filling up my bike a kid looked over and exclaimed, "Oh, old school!", I'd say, "Yeah, but not nearly as old as I look!"

Vintage, being 20+ years old seems a bit 'previous' to me.... but then I'm 64 ! When I was 17/18 I had a 1968 BSA Starfire, and it was in 1977 or so and I thought that was an old bike.... it was 9.....
At 64 I have a 2006 Sportster and a 2010 Dyna Streetbob.... 18 and 14 respectively, but I don't think they are old.... it's all relative as Einstein woulkd say I suppose - this is too much thinking for a Sunday morning.... how long 'till the pub's open ?

Beautiful scenery but what happened to the real vintage bikes? Agreed these are faster, safer, more economical, and more comfortable but they severely lack style. They look like jet-skis.
