  • Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero, Jr., offers his insights on the most famous moments in his sterling riding career in "Cordero on Cordero," a new video series developed by The New York Racing Association, Inc.
As a jockey Cordero won 7,057 races, including many of the most prestigious events in North America. In New York alone, Cordero won the 1976 Belmont Stakes, six editions of the Woodward (including five straight from 1981-1985), five runnings of the Suburban, and two renewals of the Whitney.
In addition, Cordero won the Jockey Club Gold Cup three times, but it's his defeat in the 1978 running aboard Seattle Slew that's the subject of the first episode of "Cordero on Cordero." That year's Gold Cup served as the second of two meetings between Triple Crown winners Seattle Slew and Affirmed, but it was Exceller who would come out on top that day. In the video Cordero critiques his ride aboard Seattle Slew and explains why he'd like to have the opportunity to ride that race all over again.
NYRA will release additional episodes of "Cordero on Cordero" in the upcoming weeks, giving racing fans the opportunity to hear more of Cordero's takes on some of the most historical events in racing history.

In this race, even being defeated, Slew showed he was one of the greatest racehorses ever.

Angel rode my first winner at Belmont AEQUANIMITAS trained by Jose Martin in 1987! Blast from the past. Let's never forget the fate of the late great Exceller, an extraordinary race horse.....housed in luxury at Gainesway for years, only for his life to end in a slaughterhouse. Remember, there is no "horse industry" without the horse -- let's take action to care of the animals that allow us to participate and enjoy the sport of horseracing.

Amazing performance by Exceller. He had to come from way behind and run all out, with no breather, for the final mile of a 1 1/2 mile race in order to collar Slew and win. Exceller was a quintessential long distance racer. Almost all his wins occurred at distances of 1 1/2 miles & greater while most of his losses occurred at shorter distances.

It wouldn't have made a difference.Affirmed was the best in his 3 tear old Crop.He never had to Run so fast in his life when he met Slew.Look at Affirmed Races He couldn't keep up when the 1/4 was 23 and change and the 1/2 in 47 Whenever His races went 25 ,48 and change, then He was either on the Lead or Close to it.He ran against a 4 year old Slew who was Rounding into Shape I was a Pony boy at the Meadowlands when Dr Patches Beat Slew.Dr Patches was the Sprint Champ going a Mile and 1/8 Slew was his first Race since his Near Death Respiratory Infection.Peterson took over for Turner. The Track was listed Fast I was on the Track.I ponies another Horse in the Patterson. The Track was still Muddy and had that sticky heavy Mud.Cruget Put Slew on the Front end.The race was a Mile and 1/8.Slew went 22 45,109 flat, the mile in 133 flat A tic off the track record by Rushing Man.132:4.Slew hadnt been racing for 5 or 6 months. NOT sure but it was awhile. SLEW was gassed turning for Home Dr.Patches Went by him and Opened up 2 and Slew Tried Coming back Got beat about s Neck.
When Slew Hooked Affirmed the First time,Affirmed chased Slew and Couldn't gain any ground. Affirmed had No excuse.Cordero blew his Stirrop in the first turn and Took off.Affirmed Saddle slipped because he tried Running with Slew.Look at the Next Year when Spectacular Bid Chased Affirmed. He tried Numerous times making a Move, but couldn't get past the 4 year old Affirmed.Look at The Bid in California as a 4 year old,He Broke the World Record in the Mile and a 1/4 in 1:57 and pimples The 70's Era had the Group of Champions that We will Never See Again. Don't forget Ruffian.

@@howardcall1591 *It wouldn't have made a difference.Affirmed was the best in his 3 tear old Crop* Exactly. Three year old Affirmed was destroyed by two outstanding four year olds in his 11th race in a long season. It's worth noting that Slew lacked the durability and resilience required to compete in anything close to that many races in a single season. Also, at age four Affirmed was a better horse than he had been at three. He won the Hollywood Gold Cup in the time 1:58.4 even though he carried 132 pounds. He and Exceller locked horns again in the Santa Anita Handicap and this time a more mature Affirmed won easily in a speedy 1:58.6.

@sl7293 Slew had poor Handling. The Owners forced Slew to go to California while he was Sick and couldn't breathe against JO TOBIN.His first race back at the end of his 3yr.old year,at the Meadowlands, the Jock let him run off going at Mile 1/8 in the Patterson and went the 3/4 in 1:09 over Heavy muddy track.I was a pony boy in the race and can testify to that.History says it was a fast track. Not so.Look at what Slew did to a 3yr old firm in their first battle. Affirmed did the same to Spectacular Bid.And the Bid went on as 4 yr.old to break the World record at a Mile and a Quarter

@@howardcall1591 Slew wasn’t sick. Unlike horses such as Secretariat, Damascus and Citation, he was tired after the triple crown campaign. He was so exhausted that they didn’t run him again after the Swaps for the reminder of the season and, no, that wasn’t the result of that life threatening infection. That infection only materialized in January of the next season, three days before Slew was scheduled to compete in the Tallahassee Handicap. Slew was over that infection by the end of February, but his connections realized they had a fragile horse. They only ran him sparingly at age 4, picking their spots carefully. They took pains to avoid running him in races where he might be assigned high imposts until his final race of the season. The Patterson Handicap was Slew’s 3rd race of the season, and he got beat fair and square by Dr. Patches who was simply better that day.
With respect to the Swaps, J.O. Tobin was a former turf horse who was most at home on really fast tracks including fast California dirt tracks. Unlike the Preakness where he started slowly, Tobin shot out of the starting gate of the Swaps like a bullet and never looked back. He passed the mile marker in 1:33.6. Slew is one of a number of excellent East Coast horses that faltered when running on West Coast tracks. Kelso was another.

Affirmed was exhausted after his brutal 3yo campaign and this race does not reflect the differnce between the two horses. Slew's style was always going to be a problem for Affirmed, just too much speed for too long. Too bad Slew didn't race for one more year. Imagine that 1979 JCGC with Slew in there, along with Affirmed and Bid. WOW!!!

    • @jjs490

Slew almost died after he won the TRIPLE crown. The owners were very negligent with him. He had a 104 fever with a bad virus in December, 1977. He was coughing for a week prior possibly more. But he recovered. The new trainer Peterson waited until May or June of 78 to make sure he was healthy and strong again. Then he beat the current Triple crown winner Affirmed 2 different times, only to lose to Excelsior by a nose in a magnificent race, Angel Cordero blames himself for that loss, he says it keeps him up at night and he hit the Slew at the wrong time. He explains it here in this above video interview.. He says the Slew was the greatest horse he rode in his Career, with his speed and power The Seattle slew story is an unbelievable story , starting with the very cheap price of $17,500 the group paid for him. His Documentary is on here i get emotional every time i watch it . The Slew was the ist horse i ever followed. Im so glad i did !

That would have been a great race. The Bid would probably have run third because, all things being equal, an older horse beats a three year old.

@dvdlucs Cordero knew he was not on a Secretariat here running those fast fractions going a 1 1/2 mile. He would have won if he did not run him so fast early. Same with the Bid in the Belmont. You can only run a horse like Secretariat in a 1 1/2 mile running those kind of tractions without running out of gas.

Oh please. Different race. Different track. The track in the Spring of '73 was exceptionally fast. Look it up!!!! Secretariat on that track....that day in his prime...would not have won. He didn't have the courage....or the weight on his back...or that competition.

Secretariat had only one Race that he set those Fractions and that was the Belmont. The track was scraped to set those type of Fractions.
Belmont surface is normally deep in sand.Secretariat had only one horse test him in the Belmont and that was a Tired Sham.Sham was not made for a mile and a half.
