Something to note is that Brian Fargo, the godfather of Fallout, has spoken about how surprisingly fun it was for him to play as a teenage girl in Life is Strange. Having a good teenage story, especially from a woman's point of view, is rare, and also a reminder why it's great to explore other points of view. Silent Hill 3's Heather remains one of my all time favorite characters because she felt believable and for delving into fears that men do not typically have [Fears of lacking agency, and fears of sex, rape, pregnancy, and of giving birth]. Life is Strange may not always nail its themes or have the best dialogue, but it clearly cares about Max and Chloe and how they feel. That's rich storytelling material, and something lacking in many games that focus on genre clichés like action.

I know that people really like to rag on Chloe in the game for how selfish and insecure she can be, but honestly with someone with severe abandonment issues I totally relate to her a lot. Like, there are many times where if one of my friends doesn't respond to something I say for a long while I get scared they're ignoring me because I've had prior experience with being ghosted by someone I was best friends with and thought we were totally fine. I can't exactly hate a character when I know I'd make similar decisions when put in the same situation, y'know?

    • @bluemooninthedaylight8073
      @bluemooninthedaylight8073 Рік тому +7

Yeah, I get that too, having abandonment issues myself, and also why I'm more forgiving of a younger friend of mine who is currently dealing with abandonment issues. When people hurt a lot, they can and will act out negatively. It doesn't make them bad people.

Hating life is strange after loving it in your adolescence is cringe. Same thing happened to my generation with the film “ garden state “ which is a great movie but 5-6 years after it came out and the industry got oversaturated with pixie dream girl melancholy coming of age movies it became “ cool “ to hate on it
Same thing is happening with life is strange, your going to look back on this game in 6-10 years and look back fondly on it.

I in no small part credit this game with my realizing that I was trans and queer, and that's largely because it was the first game I'd ever played that let me fill the shoes of a character that I could relate to in so many ways, but who was also a queer girl, and that was an absolute game changer for me as a younger person.

Being someone whos also one of those weird "Videogames are art" people, having a game series that I just refuse to judge in any way at all is kinda refreshing. The LiS games (And especially Before the Storm) really just helped me understand myself better with characters I shared flaws and experiences with, and I don't think any amount of gameplay or cringy dialogue could take away from that.
I think FNV is the best game ever made, but Ulysses never helped me grapple with my abandonment issues; Chloe Price did.

For all its faults, I think Life Is Strange has heart. If this game was just hipster teenager bs, wich is has is spades, it wouldn't have been as sucessful as it was. Its also not a game for adults.
For example, I live in Brazil; I have no connection to the "pacific northwest" or north american high school teenager lifestyle, this couldn't be further from my reality, but the game still spoke to me, I connected with its themes of teenage love, sexuality, repressive parents, depression, suicide, escaping small towns, etc, and everyone in my friends group also loved it, I remember playing each episode as it came out along with all my friends, it was a blast.
In my game, I couldn't save that one girl who jumps from the building, and by that time in my life, depression and suicide had allready affected me personally, so that shit really hit me in a way I wont get into here, but the point is I think it's really important to have media directed at strange emo cringey teenagers, and the only way to reach them is to speak in their language, and well, Life is Strange spoke that language. Anything that helps a kid like that get out of bed and live another day has value

This life do be strange. I have said it many times before, but Life is Strange is the worst game that I still like. In fact, I can barely say why I even like this game, the writing is strange (get it), the setting is ok, the themes are somewhat muddled. That being said, there is something endearing about the game that is almost inexplicable and I can't help but like the game because of it. Additionally, it is nice that it was a springboard for the rest of the series which I think has more in the way of substance. Like it gets a lot of flak, but Life is Strange 2 is one of the most close looks at institutional racism that I have seen in a game, a much more personal and intimate story than the allegorical and detached story of something like Detroit Become Human.

I never played Life Is Strange, but I have played many of the Telltale games, Heavy Rain, and Detroit, and I loved all of them, despite the fact I’m aware of the core issues with the gameplay and narratives. I pumped hours and hours into testing the minor differences between playthoughs, knowing full well the differences were minor (less so for the David Cage games). Why? Because I love movies and I got attached to the characters, knowing I could have some impact on their journeys, even if that was in a mild way. Call me crazy but I will always love the Walking Dead and Detroit (those are my two favs) no matter how little gameplay there is, or how insignificant the decisions were

Honestly ill take Life is Strange's weird semi-melted G.I. Joe figure faces all day every day over something more realistic like Detroit: Become Human. I'm sick of games trying so hard to be photo-realisic at all costs, Life is Strange is a charming middle ground imo and suits the artsy hipster tone of the rest of the game.

I have a controversial opinion that LIS is intentionally cringe the first one at least. LIS2 and BtS are extremely bad.
Chloe is meant to be unlikeable, you arent meant to go "Damn chloe you are so right beeing such an asshole to everyone" and she was completely wrong about David who despite beeing a very open conservative asshole still ends up beeing the hero of the story and very clearly cares about Chloe and Joyce.
The story is very much about giving Chloe and Max time to connect before she died, the universe giving them a chance and all,if she refuses to accept Chloe's death literally EVERYONE dies.

A warm, teenaged adventure expressing some melancholy that felt insurmountable and hidden, totally solidified yet passing, mysterious. I've had this same experience with a handful of things, Night in the Woods was another such game.

I recently got a decent computer for the first time in years and the first thing I did was download some of my favorite games from my teen years: New Vegas and Life is Strange, so needless to say finding your channel tonight has been great!
Especially playing Life is Strange after all these years I found myself coming to very similar reflections. All the time I was playing I was thinking about how the game's story is confusing, the characters are poorly written and one-sided, everything seems like a fanfic, and at the same time I can 100% understand why I, an edgy queer tumblr kid, was absolutely in love with it.

To be honest, as the game came out when I was also in my teen/formative years, I found it, not cool, but nice in a "quirked up little white boy" sense. Like of course I'm gonna sympathise with Chloe over Max as a little goober who listened to Linkin Park. I think if it was the target of the studio to hit this 12-15 bracket of teens who thought that they are "Not the same" they pretty much did it correctly. We all were cringey during that time we grew up, so yeah, it what made us connect. To me this game is just that, a game, but a game that was nice to play.

I think the game is a masterpiece and I‘ll die on that hill. Sure it‘s „cringe“ and flawed and the writing is awkward, but who exactly determines what makes a game valuable to people or good? I feel like so many ppl are obsessed with technicality and hating something they see as „cringe“ that they won‘t allow themselves to feel the game actually.
Like, to me it is such an important game. It helped me go through terrible chronic pain flare ups. And it is a game that let‘s me be queer as a woman that also makes me feel invested. Just because gamer bro‘s think anything but the dude bro power fantasy is bad and shameful if you like it doesn‘t mean that that is the truth.
What is cringe to me is to laugh at people who are „cringe“ or like „cringy media“ because you‘re so terribly insecure about you being possibly cringe, you‘ll do the cringe equivalent of overcompensating for your queerness for a closeted person. And with that at least i can kinda empathize as a gay woman who‘s been confused for a very long time.
I genuinely think it is really arrogant and condecending to bash this game and ppl that like it just because it isn‘t perfect and doesn‘t appeal to you. I mean it‘s also a bit cringe to me how much you‘re seemingly trying to be apologetic of daring to like the game as a kid. Like so what? You liked it! That is valid! Art is not an objective thing! If it speaks to you, that‘s what matters! Nobody else can take that from you! And if ppl don‘t like it that‘s fine too! But when ppl get arrogant and think their opinion of it is the most valid one, that‘s where it becomes an issue.
I‘m not embarrassed for loving this game. I will not apologize for the fact it made me feel something. And that it compforted me in very difficult times. And that it helped me be true to my queer self in a time I was deep in the closet about it.
If you like this game, don‘t let anyone tell you that it‘s bad and that you‘re bad for liking it. It‘s usually straight white gamer bro‘s anyways. And when did their obnoxious whining about games not made for them ever matter?
Let girls especially gay girls have their angsty art! This isn‘t any more cringey than the Spiderman movies or any other media for teen boys. And let‘s be honest, the only reason the critics never take those things apart as harshly or as critically is cause ppl just hate girls and things made for girls. And I will die on that hill too!
    Leave girls alone!

    • @ayrtonjoga
      @ayrtonjoga Рік тому +2

I get what you're saying, but this comment is almost as condescending as those you keep calling out. First, there's a difference between something having personal value, or just being overall great
There are many mediocre and bad games I enjoy, but I'm not gonna fight in a hill for them, because I know there isn't much to defend, just like your affection with it won't fix the issues this video listed between 3:31 and 6:54 , not saying to give up on your love for them, but just don't mix things up because they matter to you
Second, your whole cringe talk is disingenuous and full of assumptions, some stuff just are cringe and you can't change that, but so what?
You go on and on about enjoying whatever has value to you, but it seems you can't let go of being called "cringe" yourself, believe me, I'm part of some infamous fanbases and know what being called cringe is like, but the best you can do is just ignore these people and keep enjoying
Third, everyone knows kids have lower standards than adults, so being embarrassed about something others liked as a kid is the fear of a part of their childhood that sucks, for not being as good as they remembered, not for inherently enjoying at the time
Lastly, "straight white gamer bros" can criticize any media they want, just as much as the LGBT does and even some of them has issues with the game, so don't bring politics to silence criticism, going for this tactic just shows you have nothing to prove or defend
Your last point was just dumb, I'm sorry, but did you forgot people like Mulan, Powerpuff Girls, My Little Pony, etc.? The public want something well written or just fun to pass the time, whether it's for girls or not

@@ayrtonjoga i‘m sorry but this comment seems a lot like a cope. I mean sure it makes sense that me commenting on this guy‘s take on the game is somehow similar to what i critisize him for, i can see that to a degree. And u can disagree with that. Doesn‘t mean I won‘t stand by that though just as he is standing by his take about the game. But In my eyes art is subjective. And I guarantee you that if this game was featuring straight male characters as leads the same story wouldn‘t be nearly as „bad“ to you as it supposedly is. And I know this is a thing because media for women being unfairly put down and teared apart endlessly by „critics“ is a real thing. Same with white gamer dudes being obnoxious, uncaring of others in their nieche that aren‘t like them, entitled and often times also toxic. That‘s been an issue for years and you have to be delusional to deny that or just imtentionally ignorant of it because looking at it objectively would upset you. I‘ll stand by this take. Because art in my eyes is not and never will be objectively anything. Art is subjective. And any opinion about it is subjective also. What I‘m arguing for is that no one take is superior to all others and no take is the true objective one. My take is subjective too. I never said otherwise. But it doesn‘t mean I can‘t stand by it and defend it also if I want to. And a lot of people agree with this too. There‘s a lot of people who love this game. So of course when they see someone critisizing it they‘ll disagree more or less.
I think many people struggle with the idea of backlash. People just want to be right and be the superior one in any kind of discussion especially in gaming. But there‘s intrinsic value to anything that‘s art. I personally dispise media like batman and I could make a ton of vides on how it‘s bad in my opinion. But if someone loved it and wanted me to know why I‘d still listen to that. I might disagree but that doesn‘t mean them liking it isn‘t as valid as my dislike of it. The point is how we talk about this. And I‘m aware that in a way I‘m doing what OP is doing. But I also think it‘s warranted to do it. He‘s posted a video critical of this game. I respond. In a way it‘s equalizing the field of discussion i guess if i wanted to be arrogant about it. But I don‘t really care how I come off tbh. I love this game. And if you hate it and explain at length why i‘m gonna give my take on it. Especially if I got time for it and feel like doing so. I mean there‘s a comment section here so who says we can only agree with OP if we wanna comment. That‘s silly.
Also to adress the upset from you over saying straight gamer bro‘s. One question. How fragile are you? Like, seriously. We all know it‘s an issue. We all know that people of that group posess some annoying traits. So why are you triggered? You think i don‘t do it to my own community? I do plenty of times trust me. There‘s a LOT of dumb bs done by queer leftists online especially the younger ones. And i do call it out too. But I do find it funny that as much as the white gamer dude side postures about how tough and great they are at not being whiny, they still are. Your response here would be one example. There‘s fragile snowflakes on both sides for sure. And I‘m also aware of it. So really there‘s no point in bashing one side when you can‘t take the other getting just 1 critical comment once.
Over all I‘d like to say, chill out. Your opinion is valid. I just don‘t agree with it. And I have the right to say so as much as you have to voice yours.

@@takke9830 Firstly, I agree to an extent about subjectivity in art, there's a reason some media can be bashed on release, and then is considered a "cult classic" years later
The problem is you're taking this to an extreme, some stuff are just better than others, or at least in different aspects, and it's simple as that. Pulling the "but subjective" card all the time is just invalidating criticism at this point
Secondly, I see stories with male protags getting shredded all the time, this "but when it's with a male it's not bad" isn't a thing, just look at OG Mulan, Alien, Terminator 2, Wonder Woman, Edge of Tomorrow, Arcane and others that are universally praised, despite the leads' gender
Thirdly, not only straight gamer bros, but fans in general gets excited when someone else enters their niche hobby
I know gatekeeping is real, but not acknowledging that both welcoming and hostile fans coexists, just to focus on the bad side is disingenuous
Fourthly, "To address the upset from you over saying straight gamer bros"
When? I talked about them once, and was just to say they deserve a voice, like you keep preaching, because you mentioned them first and keeps dragging this out
I think you're the one getting heated, all I said is that enjoying mid/bad art isn't a problem, how every issue isn't simply sexism, and pointed out the inconsistencies and hypocrisy in your comment, especially when you're trying to make it seem more personal and problematic than it is

I like that Life Is Strange revels in the time it was created in. Most art tries to escape the present because the idea is that the present is boring compared to the future & past. But life is strange achieves a sort of meta-enjoyment beyond its story as a time capsule of the 2010s. It'll probably be considered really nostalgic and "aesthetic" in the future.

Didn't the sequel basically retcon the endings to have both happened? Like Chloe is alive but the town wasn't completely wiped out?
I haven't seen this series in so long.

Nah, if Arcadia Bay got Arcadia Blasted off the map it's a wreck in LiS2 but if Chloe is dead it's fine. There's a comic book that is semi-non cannon that basically suggests that all timelines are real but our Max only perceives the one she's in ???? It's hard to explain but whatever it's fun

Life is Strange comes across to me as the teen girl characters equivalent of "former military character (written by writers with no background, connection or interest in the military)".
It's not fetishising authenticity to want something better than that; there has to be women who could write a "the shit teenage girls get up to when no one is watching" plot. Not "Rockstar's Bully, but with period pain and psychological torment mechanics" nor "Weeb Highschool Visual Novel: The Subtitle" but an actual compelling yarn for a game that has its own identity and generates word of mouth because it delivered what was promised.

A bid of a weird sentiment?
Just because something is bad (and Life is strange isn't THAT bad) doesn't mean you aren't allow to like it.
There are people who come to together and watch bad movies and having a great time.
You still can like something either because of its flaws or despite its flaws.
As long - at least as critic you aknowledge those flaws and see how the medium is it's fine thus know when to recommend something
If all people come out with the same conclusion there wouldn't be a point watching more than one critic.
I value YOUR opinion and that's why I'm subscribed and you handled things so far as critic should - in my opinion :|
And that's why I watched your video about Life is Strange anyways. A topic I can't hear anymore.
    .. or
    TL;DR
    Don't worry
    You're doing a good job

I think the only true value art can have on an objective level is the ways that it can be related to our experiences. I think NITW is a gorgeous, wonderful game, and that's because I always connect with all sorts of different parts of it whenever i revisit it - I connected with the vibe of the world and the isolation Mae experiences when I was 14, then I replayed it when I was 17 and cried watching Mae be thrust into the adult world, and when I replayed it recently, I couldn't help but feel seen when Mae describes her dissociation and derealization.
I think that, more than anything else, that makes NITW a valuable piece of art. Even if every other aspect of the game was terrible (which it isn't), the fact that I'm still able to form that connection means that it isn't trash or worthless.

The fact that this one video about life is strange has 15% of views compared to the average video on this channel is hilarious.
It's clear people who like fallout don't like teen dramas. Practically the antithesis of the mature topics of fallout.

Well, not in my case at least. I played both fallout 1&2 when I was 14, wouldn't shut up about them to those who hadn't played them, and then loved life is strange a few years later, despite how awful the dialogue is.

If you love fallout. Would you play underrail. A finely tuned spiritual succesor to fallout. Its more immersive sim then crpg and after the opening a full flegded open world rpg.
Build your character around a damage output. Builds is similar to fallout but less dialogue more clever thinking. Most builds work with creativity. Even on Dom.

frankly, i think that attempting to mitigate bias is missing the point: just make your point, biased and all, knowing that it's contributing to greater discourse, and not diluting or polluting that discourse. some things are just best kept as opinions, not science :3
also, i've got two examples of things that i have vexing attachments for, despite not being able reason why. A Series of Unfortunate Events [the jim carey one, not the tv series] and Final Fantasy XIII. for whatever reason both of those media activate my neurons, and i'll die on the hill defending their artistic merit with no clue as to why im on the hill!

Have you considered making a fallout 76 vid? I mean putting away all the "reeeee it ain't fallout, i am offended down to my core" stuff. For the bare minimum it has the biggest map with lore bits and pieces all around and it definitely delivers on the exploration department.

I think you are wrong thinking the choices didn't matter...you are looking at it materialistically not mentally...yes from a material standpoint, if you sacrifice chloe (or the bay) you revert all the previous choices so materially nothing changes compared to you at start of the game...HOWEVER, at the end of that game, at the funeral, is a Max that remembers all the choices she made, the people she watched die, the times she screwed up, the final decision, everything...so while there is no material result of all of those choices, except the last one, there is a large mental impact on her very being from this whole adventure, an impact she will carry till the end of her days
sure you can say, she can just wave a hand and say "never happened" and not be bothered by it...but, if you, at any point in your life, had some mental issues, depression, hypochondriac, etc. anything really...you know, that these things cannot just be waved away, you cannot snap your fingers and forget them or not care about them, no, they just fuckin stay with you and influence your entire existence going forward...this is even alluded to in the game, in the alt reality that max created by saving chloe's dad, max never goes into a depressive phase from having a loved one die, so she becomes more outspoken and outgoing and uses her photographic talent to become one of the most popular people in Blackwell, instead of being a shy weirdo...because those sort of mental experiences shape us
