      NASCAR is to blame for not scheduling any testing with the (awful) COT prior to the race. The cars has never turned a lap at the track until first practice on Friday.

    • @DDS029
      @DDS029 6 років тому +3

      Why is everyone so down on the COT? It was a race car, period. It's not like it only had three wheels. You get the rules, you build the car, then find out who made the adjustments in it that suits their driver, and wins the race.
      Of all the divisions I raced in there was always something that was different about the cars. And usually so did everyone else.
      The COT was a major advancement in safety. The things learned from it are almost still used today. It just in different wrapping paper.

I heard that the reason for all these blow outs was the year before Indy had the track re-paved and GOODYEAR refused to do a tire test and this was the result, and if you remember, Formula 1 had the same issues and that was the reason, Bridgestone again refused to run a tire test and only 6 cars started that race. That is what i like about nascar is they at least still ran, formula 1 was a HUGE disappointment that year, i mean who wants to see any race with 6 cars on track? Nascar teams at least ran the race

    Another problem with the Brickyard 400 is that it usually takes place in late July, which is the hottest time of the year almost everywhere in the northern hemisphere for all areas below the Tropic of Cancer- Indianapolis included. For this year it's going to be held in early September after Darlington, when the weather is cooler, which is a good thing. But the NASCAR race at Indy should be a Saturday night race. Why not? No to more tire suppliers. Remember Hoosier in 94? 2 drivers died because of this.

    • @DDS029
      @DDS029 6 років тому +2

      We were running Hoosiers on our ARCA car without a problem, same cars (0 to 5 years older), same weight, same tracks, same tires. The difference was we didn't pretend to know better than the Hoosier techs. We did what they said to do. Not all the wacky steering geometries, camber settings, tire pressures, the NASCAR team's tire "specialist" did.
      Bodine had the field covered at Dover. He could run a full fuel run, and then some, without blowing up after 20-25 laps like the Goodyears. The lesser talent drivers would burn up their tires and wreck, while the more experienced Goodyear teams could run a few laps longer. So when the "less talented" brought out the yellow it was just in time for the better teams. Bodine didn't need tires, except that new Goodyears were faster than 25 lap Hoosiers. So to make sure he could stay out in front of the wrecks, he had to change tires also. And there went his advantage of not having to make as many pit stops.
      A tire war is not good for ANYBODY. One side or the other at any given race is going to step over the line.
      And which two drivers died in '94 because of tires? If you are talking about Bonnet, you are mistaken. Our ARCA car crashed in the same spot the day before, and broke the wall. You can see in pictures of Bonnet's accident, that the D and A are missing off the wall.
      Ours was a first timer at Daytona. A gust of wind caught him off guard. Unfortunately, he did what you do to "save" the car on a short track which was the wrong thing to do here. Our car slid sideways onto the apron, shot up the track, hit the roof of the car on the top of the wall, and came spinning down the track. When I took the car to the Museum at Talladega the next day, the tires were flat spotted, but were still holding air the last time I saw it thirteen years ago.
      So on Neil's car, he either over corrected and knocked the air out of the RF when he hit, ran over something, or they didn't set the front end geometry like it was suggested for all the teams that used to run the Goodyears, and abused the RF.
      We ran Hoosiers before that, and we ran Hoosiers after that, and never had a problem unless we messed up the setup.

    Out of all my 30 or so years of watching NASCAR this is the only time I've seen anything even close to this, I think it was also the COT car of tomorrow, they said that I'm pretty sure, I read a comment that said they diamond ground the track that year too, so a combination of things caused this. I don't hole this against anybody because look at all the times they go race and everything works out perfect, almost every single week. So yea just a fluke.

    this was even worse, tirewise, than the 2005 charlotte races, at least for those races, it was not totally the tires fault, as the track was diamond grinded, which shredded the tires. but this race was a perfect example of a SHIT job by goodyear and nascar.

    As someone who watches NASCAR seldom, I didn't know NASCAR had its own disastrous F1 US GP-like tyre disaster. This is what that F1 GP would have been for Michelin teams had they raced. They would've needed to pit every 10 laps or so.

    @smackythefrog23 Very nicely put. I've seen this all too often with popular sports / music groups / businesses / etc. They start out small and are really good because they are run by people who are fighting to put the best product possible out to the customers, but as it becomes more popular, business minded people who couldn't give a rat's orifice (keeping it clean for the kiddies) take over for the money and end up ruining something good. Unfortunate.

    You notice after this race in the next year Tony George was fired from his position as IMS president. I wonder if the drastic decline of ticket sales and attendance the next year was the reason why he was let go. Tony was the one who brought nascar to INDY in 1993 and people thought he was the best track owner in the world. However what he was doing was catering more for NASCAR like INDYCAR racing and most IRL starts went to NASCAR because IRL was pure shit in terms of money and fan support by the mid to late 2000s.
