Mr. Tunney is a welcome voice of reason. Conspiracies certainly exist, and pretending they don't simply empowers those in control. Looking at the world through rose colored glasses doesn't make the evil go away.

@@dannaglia yes, but most people don't discern facts from propaganda in a rational manner, hence they see evil under every rock or conspiracy where there is non. You see this chaos especially these days in the world and evil works on both fronts. There obviously is evil in this physical dimension of the flesh, and pretending it doesn't is naive, but we have to be careful not to become corrupted by the very thing we're afraid of by seeing it everywhere. peace.

Authoritarian does not feel like the right word. Men such as James, speak with a voice of Authority that comes from self knowledge. How well do you understand yourself and this world? Just curious, my guess is that you haven't lived long enough to understand who you are. It takes time, persistence and energy-drive. (Just in case you're curious.)

When you speak of the fourth shore, I think of the liminal space. I worked as a counsellor in hospice and trauma. In those fields and in other times of transition, people often enter this space of "not knowing" where they have left behind the land (firm ground) on which they stood and now must trust the process of life, embrace paradox and grow tolerant of ambiguity. Surrender to the process (not resignation) enables the traveller to minimize the dangers of the crisis and seize the opportunities they're offered. Often this leads to a whole different shore in a new land.

Well done. Another great discussion. I have sometimes felt that James' emphasis on the dangers of technology are too strong, but I found the extended discussion in this interview helped me to see the source of his concern. For me, the threat of technology is more of the ascendency of incompetence over care; but put in the context of the sociopathic enthusiasm for control, I can see that there are humanist (meaning "originating from human nature") issues that go beyond the obvious insufficiencies of the tools as they have been developed up to now. Walt Disney made the image indelible in "Fantasia", but I suppose he also swept it under the comedic carpet as well.
There are different possible ways to approach regaining control by the human spirit of the manipulative powers of the human mind. I have also been following the lessons that Iain McGilchrist is teaching us, and they help to suggest a possible rapprochement between the materialist model of neurobiology and the humanist traditions. I would also like to point to some efforts to go beyond the mechanical problem-solving approaches that were popular from the 1930's on and represent a return to a consideration of traditional methods of "diplomacy" from indigenous cultures. I have recently been studying some authors whom I have not seen referred to in Jeffrey' s discussions. One is Tyson Yunkaporta (Sand Talk). The other is Carol Sanford ("The Regenerative Life" and "Indirect Work"). Incidentally, Carol Sanford was a mentee of Arthur M. Young as well.
Thank you again for the further study materials along the lines of political and psychological history and analysis. It is obvious that I will never catch up with all the books that the two of you are familiar with and have read.

Hi Jeff and James. I have paused this exchange at 43.15 to ask what I believe is the most pertinent question to have arisen within me from hearing all the exchanges between you both. Here it is: if one is engaged in spiritual development and others around you are not, how do you cope with that? If you are a good driver and everyone else is driving like a maniac, how do deal with the frustration of this - with the idiocy of what you see around you? Do you divorce yourself from the world? I hope you can both address this. I love the exchanges and I hope they continue. Happy new year. Chris.

Some books that I read 40 years age have come to my attention in a variety of ways so that I feel an irresistible need to read again. When I listened to this program, the foundation was strange because I hear the ideas that P. D. Ouspensky wrote in his life, woven beneath James very wordy but necessary explanations. The 'miraculous' itself has not found expression yet..
What does James think about synchronicity as the miraculous.? I have recently re-read ISOTM with my experiences of the 40 years since 1984. The strangeness of this section of time seems to be moving steadily through time and in space....the mystical experiences in our human past is in Ouspenskys' books, imo . It seems to me James is carrying the old and new details forward. Reading Ouspenskys' In Search of the Miraculous and then listening to this program was a huge coincidence to me.

Mr. Tunney is well-spoken, thoughtful and able to articulate his point of view very well. That said, I have to disagree with him when he begins to dissemble about the actions of Russia in Ukraine. His points could be debated prior to the war, or afterwards. But to assign a moral equivalence to Russia's actions to prior acts by other nations does nothing to end the current hostilities, or to avoid an impending wider conflict. It just muddies the waters with moral ambiguity. That doesn't work in wars, and it certainly doesn't work in ending them with dictators.

As regarding the war in Ukraine, well I definitely have another perspective as I live in Poland in Rzeszow which is 50 miles from Ukrainian border. In short - from my perspective the situation has gone way too far to apply any form pacifism at the moment, it is a brutal military, ideological and economical war in which at least one has to lose. There is no symmetry, Ukraine is an independent country that has been attacked by a nationalist regime lead by Putin who should be treated not as a leader of a country but as a war criminal. I want to make it clear - here I write a couple of words about politics and history and masses of people, individual stories may be extremely diverse. I also do have some Russian friends, who as far as I know are strongly against the war. Actually my main hope in this situation is that some Russians will finally get rid of this tyrant. We have hundreds of years of common history with Ukraine and also with Russia. Lots of fights in the middle ages between various duchys and kingdoms, then most of today's Ukraine in Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth in early modernity, also fighting with each other and then with Russian Empire. We also have memories of the communist times and how it all looked like. And despite numerous difficult things in history, for some years Ukrainian and Polish people are close to each other. The languages look different because of different alphabets but they sound a bit similar (I speak no Ukrainian, never learned it but when I hear it I can understand about 30-60%). Ukrainians started coming to Poland by hundreds of thousands after Poland joined the EU in 2004 because of economic reasons, everything was ok with them. Now I think over 3 million of them came here since the war started (and Poland is a 38-milion country, so this is a lot). Both Polish and Ukrainian people don't know Russian imperialism just from books or news; we have experienced it and fought with it for hundreds of years. And for many reasons thinking in terms of the balance of power is extremely unpopular here. Firstly because it resembles widely hated Yaltan way of thinking: great powers just discussing how to share the political cake without asking anyone about their own opinion: whether Poland wanted to be under Soviet influence after 1945, whether Ukraine itself wants to join EU or NATO etc. Of course there are huge countries and powers in the world, but it doesn't mean that smaller ones have nothing to say (actually Ukraine is not that small, both by area and population it's larger than California; it looks small on the map when you compare it with Russia - but this is the area, the population of Ukraine is about 1/3 of Russia). Secondly - because it resembles the appeasement politics from late 1930s: letting Hitler devour Czechoslovakia, then Austria, then Poland, with a naive hope that he will finally state something like "Alright, I've eaten and conquered enough, now I'll be kind and peaceful and I'll never attack France or the UK)". As we know - it didn't work that way. And here we have what happened - one country, unprovoked, without declaring a war attacks the other. Russian army kills civillians, attacks hospitals etc. And Ukrainian army defends their country. So this is fundamentally unequal on moral grounds. But there are more details that may not be as obvious from further distance. Ukrainian people are extremely determined to defend their country and to get rid of the invadors. They are furious, the only way for them to reach peace is to get rid of all the Russian soldiers from their country. And Russian soldiers are not determined at all, they were told that they were going for some military training and suddenly they end up in a middle of a war for a reason that they do not understand, officers had told them that they would be welcome with flowers and parades - instead they are forced to kill and getting killed. They have terrible equipment, they Russian logistics is a disaster. And here we have what we have - it comes out that the mighty Russian army was a propaganda myth and after some minor success at the beginning of the war, they are constantly losing the territories that they initially took. And I hear it repeatedly from many Polish experts, generals and the like - that Russia has simply no way to win this war, it just came out to be much weaker than most people supposed. Which is very good because if not, Poland, or Lithuania or Estonia, or Latvia could be next. And then, maybe the former East Germany. And then - who knows. So it is seen like Nazi Germany: the only way to stop it is to defeat it. It should have been stopped long time ago, as with Nazi Germany, but technology, morals, tactics are much weaker and it shouldn't be as devastating for the Europe or for the world. Nuclear weapon is another part of the story and it may change a lot here and it is much more difficult to predict what will happen. But one thing is clear: the West is many times more powerful in this respect than Russia, and it seems that few people in Russia, also among Putin's supporters are willing to risk their own lives in such a way. The whole tragedy of this situation is that many people are killed anyway but as I say - from my perspective it looks that most probably the sooner Putin's regime looses the war and collapses, the fewer victims will be.

1:35:40 About the disputes between between the Ukrainians and the Russians causing the current conflict, the decades long conflict between Israelis and the Palestinians and the longer conflict between the Navajos and the Hopis, note these people are not acting alone. They are influenced from outside forces. It just so happens in each of these particular cases, coincidentally (although it surely isn't always the case) are influenced by the US. .... About the Navajo-Hopi dispute note: "Legacy of Bitterness: Navajo-Hopi Land Dispute, a Century of Pain" by Michelle Boorstein (LA Times 5 January 1997, available online). What would the Israeli-Palestinian be like today, if the US didn't consider the country in its own strategic interest in the Middle East and thus the recipient today of billions of dollars per year? We don't have to look too hard to find the origin of the current Ukrainian-Russian began in 2014 coup in Kiev in 2014 which was so blatantly backed and influenced by the US the executive director of Stratfor Institute (a US intelligence advisory group) said, it was "the blatant coup in history". (After all it was Victoria Nuland of the Obama administration's State Dept who acknowledged the US spent billions of dollars on Ukraine) Until then Russia was by far Ukraine's largest trading partner, with whom it shared a long history. The culture of the Russians and Ukrainians are certainly more similar than the Navajos and the Hopis and Palestinians and the Israelis.

For the record, the Statfor man publicly said the 2014 Ukraine coup was "the MOST blatant coup in history".. Unfortunately, too few Americans understand that the 2014 coup was the spark which initiated the subsequent 8 years of violence and killing in Ukraine, and was the genesis of the current military conflict after Russians began the "Special Military Operation" resulting in very real concerns of potential World War III, nuclear weapons launches, and the absolutely horrifying possibility of ending sacred life on this Earth in a nuclear Armageddon.

Keeping certain elements while the world goes crazy (continually throwing out the baby with the bath water) is what defines certain nations i.e Ireland. England has a little bit left. Scotland has more. (Sanity, general awe of our existence that satisfies deeply)
Canada can have it again because of the Indigenous people, who are rising again. But that would be a wild, massive culture shift. Woah!
It's too lonely not to take that journey into mass enlightenment. Loads of folks be lonely now.
