    WOW. I almost cried after seeing the sword completed, and you just kept going with the pommel, hilt and sheathe. Amazing.
    Why did you use the drill at 7:45?

    • @Dagon747
      @Dagon747 Рік тому +1

      drilling shallow holes while forge welding removes portions of the top layer, and leaves the dark and light contrasted metals on the surface as he pressed it back to smooth.

      To create a pattern. Aside from folding it multiple times its the primary reason he gets the pattern that shows after acid etching.

    • @insertcoolnamehere_1
      @insertcoolnamehere_1 11 місяців тому

      @@tharalter Is the pattern only because he did the drilling or is it because his chosen material is damascus?

    • @tharalter
      @tharalter 11 місяців тому

      @@insertcoolnamehere_1 A little bit of both. The damascus ensures the different colors as the different steels all have slightly different finishes. But the drilling ensures the shape, that's why the circles or ripple like patterns are on the finished product. You likely would still get a pattern without drilling, but it'd be more like random squiggles that you see in other damascus blades as opposed to the neat patterns he gets from drilling.

      @insertcoolnamehere_1 11 місяців тому

      @@tharalter Ahh makes sense, and would the drilling alone give any patterns?

    Freerk, I've watched you bladesmithing for years, and I see you constantly use flux or borax on your forging of steel. Many American ABS Blacksmiths say that you don't and should use flux. What is the real truth in this question?

    My ophthalmologist says I can no longer watch your videos on my phone, not even in a brightly lit room, because the sudden close-ups to unbearably bright welding. Seriously, you're wearing protection, but us viewers experience those moments unfiltered like light-based jumpscares, and even turning the brightness of our screens down doesn't do much to block it. Love your work, love your videos, but dimming the welding (like other smiths do on their respective channels) might be a good idea 😵
