Bucktail Glass Minnow - UNDERWATER Footage - Saltwater and Freshwater Streamer Fly

  • Glass minnow flies are made to mimic a small transparent baitfish. Generally they are tied wispy in order to be slightly transparent. This fly I am using bucktail instead of synthetic materials. Most of my glass minnows have been tied with synthetics in the past, but this will use the old standard for streamers which is bucktail. The material moves uniquely in the water, in a way that synthetics cannot imitate just yet.
    This fly is able to be fished in both fresh and salt water. You can shrink the size of the hook a bit to accommodate the fish you are fishing for. This size hook works great for most freshwater bass, striper, redfish, seatrout, and any other saltwater species, but to fish some smaller trout on lakes or rivers, you might want to get the hook a bit smaller.
    Hook: Gamakatsu SC15 size 1/0 - amzn.to/318Hhcm
    Body wrap: Silver diamond braid - amzn.to/2EeTW4F
    Body wing: White buck tail - amzn.to/3aFdyuH
    Eyes: 3D adhesive back eyes - 4mm - amzn.to/2CE5PAH
    Epoxy: Solarez "Bone Dry" UV curing epoxy - amzn.to/2EjoLoz
    Tools.....
    Vise: Renzetti Traveler - amzn.to/2t2FFmo
    Bobbin: Stonfo Bobtec - amzn.to/2YWOf39
    Scissors: Dr. Slick all purpose - amzn.to/3fbLsZm

    That's a nice, simple baitfish pattern. Streamers are all I tie. So this is a lot like a Mickey Finn only white-flashabou-white. I never thought of dressing the rest of the hook shank.

      This is a pretty common fly down in the gulf of mexico. I have seen it dressed with a number of things. Let me know how it fishes.

      I know this will sound blasphemous, but I love tipping something like this with a strip of cut bait below the dam for blue catfish. I've also been adding a deer hair hackle as it seems to give off nice vibration mimicking the pectoral fins.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +1

      +Black Warrior Lures it's not at all. As long as bait is legal, I'm all about doing what works best. I used to use a smelly gel in corpus for redfish and seatrout. Especially for crab flies, the crab scent worked well.

    Nice fly! Did you get another vise. That doesn't look like the Atlas I saw recently. I am a vise nut, so I notice them. No not weird just love vises for some reason. I have to make myself not buy more. I can only use one at a time but have three and want more. I have a marc Petitjean master, a regal non rotary and a Nor-vise. They are all useful and I would have to really work at picking my favorite. The Nor-vise does everything, the Petitjean is the best machined, and the Regal is great too. I want the Regal Rotary. Sorry too much info. All the best, Sean

    I like doll eyes because they add a bit of rattle.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +1

      Yeah, doll eyes are nice. However, I find the rattle is so subtle it almost makes no difference. Also, they are very expensive, unless you have found them at a decent price somewhere? I think I got these 3D eyes at about 1/3 of a cent each.
      Usually for a rattle I tie in a rattle. You can get them on amazon and also some online fly shops. Here are 50 of them for $10. amzn.to/2rL4pJ1

    • @BlackWarriorLures
      @BlackWarriorLures 7 років тому

      Yeah, I usually order thing fro mover seas in bulk. I have a bunch of rattles in a couple sizes. The bigger rattle seem to make the most noise.

    • @BlackWarriorLures

      You can easily find them on Alibaba. It's like Amazon only it's B2B, allowing businesses to connect with manufacturers and wholesalers.

      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому

      Yeah, I have used that site before. I once though bought something from there, and it never came, I spent $80 after shipping, and never saw the item. They refused to give me my money back. $80 down the drain. Never buy from there again.

  • @saltflies2553

    I would tie this fly with just a little less flash and use different color eyes, like a silver color. But I did like the fact that I finally found a fly where I could efficiently use the bottom part of the bucktail! Also, what mm were the eyes? I plan on tying these in a size 2 hook so what mm eyes would you recommend for that? Thanks and a thumbs up !!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  8 років тому

      I always ad lots of flash in my flies, I like them flashy. A different size hook might not require a different size eye. I would use the right size in correlation with the length and thickness of the buck tail, not necessarily the hook size. Maybe drop a MM or so, try that.

    is this an effective fly for finicky fish? the hook is pretty visible, just curious

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +3

      Depends on how finicky... The hook is visible, I would scale down to a smaller hook if you are going after really shy fish. However where I fish this fly is in the Gulf of Mexico out of the Texas Gulf where I go after redfish and seatrout (specks) and they eat this up like no tomorrow. Even on days that some other flies don't work, these do. They do work pretty darn well there. I have caught striper, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and even a trout (with a smaller hook) on this fly.
