The best part of the update is the incredible boost in low light AF performance. I was amazed by this.
I'll definitely be testing that out soon!
TheSnapChick It needs to be turned on in the custom menu but it is quite amazing.
@@mrmdpgh How and why I have to torn on this focus? I Saw a poor focus on wedding before this update. I hope this focus can make me happy like D750.
Hi, really interested in improving the low light performance, any help with how to set this up / reviews of this would be great...
Daniel Spink Simply turn it on in the custom menu under autofocus and give it a try.
Just updated my Z6 and tested. Pretty slick, IMO! Thumbs-up to Nikon for adding this capability to their 1st-gen MF line. :)
Where you using a a Z lens.
Thanks Snap. Just used your video assist to get it up and going on my Z7. Happy Day for Nikon users. Might not be quite as powerful as Sony’s, for now, but it’s all we’ll need 98% of the time. Of course, the Bald Headed Bull Tosser and the Nerd with the Unhinged Spouse-Side Kick, they’ll blast it and do so with headings declaring the new system to be DOA, or Broken, just to get views and screw Nikon over. I gave up on them when they became deranged Z haters! Glad to see your early on satisfaction with the 2.0 update. Be back for your full reviews. All the best!
Nicely put Rob. I watched the Bald Headed Guy last night positively salivating and almost orgasmic over a Nikon Recall for the Z6 and Z7. This guy is unhinged. I do not have a problem with recalls, my D750 was recalled and returned in a timely manner, so no big deal. If there is a problem, Nikon will fix it, I will be getting a Z7 later this month before heading to Morocco.
Brendan Buckley you should love it, and, here’s wishing you a safe, life enhancing trip to Morocco. The Z7 will prove perfect for your adventure. I haven’t even picked up my D850 since purchasing the Z7. Likely to sell it soon. My D500 though, I will keep for my bird and animal photography. The Z’s don’t quite cut it as sports cameras yet. I predict Nikon will be releasing an A9 competitor later this year, or early next. I’ll likely get that one. All the best to you!
@@reoflex Same here, only shot the D850 a couple times in 4 months after getting the Z6 and decided to sell the perfect DSLR to finance adding a Z7 to the kit for the studio work I used the D850 for. That is the first camera in 40 years that I sold, but only did because it was still new enough to get a good price so have kept the D800 because it would not get much closer to a Z7. The Z6 for low light, events, travel etc and Z7 for when I would have used the D850 when a client needs high res. I am very happy with the 2.0 update, particularly low light focusing. I do a lot of portraiture and eye-AF is not something I need, since I want control of the focal plane and it is easy enough to do.
Knowing they can add this through firmware updates puts me at ease with getting a z6 and staying with Nikon
Great video Leigh, no click baits, no drama, no stream of unfunny jokes, just quality content from someone who comes across as authentic. I'd like to know how the rest of the AF improvements like low light as well as eye-af fair in your personal opinion. Anyway, I've subbed.
Welcome and thanks for the compliment! I'll definitely be checking out these new features more and I'll update everyone in a video. :)
Super helpful!! I just received my Z6 a couple weeks ago to help shoot my vlogs and this is exactly what I was looking for! Update complete! I also love that coffee mug!
I'm glad to have helped!
Nice explanation and thanks for the eye AF tests. much appreciated
Excellent review - I just came by as a result of a Google search on updating the Z7 firmware (my new memory card just got on the mail) but I was well impressed with your video showing the process as well the test you did with both cameras. Thanks and... you got a new subscriber!
I was so close on getting an Sony A7iii because of the EyeAF but now since I know nikon update it I'm definitely getting the z6 now. I'm so glad
Great video! I love the new eye detection!
Sister Snap! Really appreciate your vids. I really like your slower step-by-step; it allows easier following--something few tutorials consider. Thanks so much! Cheers,
Thank you. One of the best camera guides I have seen.
I had the "camera would stop responding if certain operations were performed while HDMI output was in progress with 4K UHD" - . So glad this was fixed. Took us a while to get the Z7 on the rig to then remove cause it wasn't working, geez. I just tested and its perfect now!! Great video BTW. Thanks!!
Oh no, I hate it when I get something all set up and then discover it isn't working for some reason. That's the WORST! I'm glad it's working for you now. :)
Really great video and thank you for continuing to educate us! I am still learning the AF settings on this camera - please continue to show you shortcuts and AF settings for real world shooting. Thank you again!
I'm moving on up (thinking Jefferson's theme song) to Z6 from D5200. I was taking shots of my daughters at an indoor playground just this weekend with my 50mm f1.8 with f mount adaptor. It worked well but I found some of my likes and dislikes. Now, some of my dislikes come from my lack of knowledge due to being new to the camera. But I found it struggled with fast motion and often didn't lock onto my subject. Also, were at regular outside playground and it often tried to lock onto a tree or fence instead of my daughter playing in front of me. I'm thinking, "WTF my 5200 could do better." I must be on at least 2.0 as it has eye detect.
Thank you for your work. As a long time Nikon pro-grade user, I am still on the fence, doing my home work to see if I will go mirrorless with Nikon. Not in a hurry, just want to know when it is good enough for me.
I appreciate your sharing wisdom I want to learn more
I upgraded and went to shoot some street photography. Daytime with the 24-70mm f4 S lens. I had hit and miss with a moving target. But it could have been the distance I was from the subjects. I'll play with it somemore.
What is really scary is when Nikon Updates this feature dowm the road to make it even better. Maybe before yesr is out? But while it needs a little polish, It works pretty good.
Sister Chick, I love your style of exposition. It makes it clearer and easier to follow. Really like it. Little suggestion: regarding lighting on your video itself, maybe can make better use of shadows on your face placing the key light up and to the side, and a hair light on the other side to the rear. Then reduce the brightness of your background in order to achieve contrast making it friendlier to the eye. Small thing. New subscriber here! God bless! Cheers,
Awesome video i have never done this before i will update my z6 tomorrow ! :)
Eye Focus still not in the same liga as Sony, but better than nothing, so thanks a lot Nikon!
As you have both Z6 and Z7 with a Z Nikkor 24-70 S lens, and the F/4 on the Z7 with the F/2.8 on the Z6, my question is if that is a deliberate choice. My hypothesis is that the F/4 is easier on the AF than the F/2.8 and with more pixels, the Z7 might have a disadvantage with the F/2.8 relative to the Z6. Have you become aware of something like this or never noticed a difference?
i am confused plz suggest z6 or a7iii who is best in photography? plz plz..
Darn- Had to send mine in for the VR repair on the recall. Just as I get eye detection, I now have to go without the camera for weeks to repair it.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you. Did it keep all your old settings?
Good question... so far it seems all my settings stayed the same.
excellent first attempt i think
The service alert was for Ibis. My Z 6 was unaffected.
Nikon Z6
Nikon Z7
MADE IN JAPAN
Nikon all the way
Thanks, very helpful video. I'm updated.
Nice video! I’m a new sub.
Welcome! :)
wasn't the camera recalled?
No, some need a repair to VR though... bit.ly/2Q4oyYe
My z6 tracks the face/eye but no longer automatically focuses. I have to press the shutter button. Thoughts?
Great job!
Thank you!
Great video, thanks. I have one question. is it possible to just past the file directly to the XQD card after formatting in the camera via the HDMI cable that connects the camera to the computer...? (that way I can open the XQD card directly from my pc) I'm thinking it might save someone who doesn't have a card reader...
See Jared Polin’s video comparing Nikon’s attempt to Sony and Canon. Since Nikon's attempt is gen 1 vs. Sony Gen 5 no surprise Sony wins... Here: ua-cam.com/video/gxqa_f6LsQI/v-deo.html
I downloaded these firmware updates on my Z6 and Z7 last night. The eye and face detect worked fine on my Z6 and failed on my Z7. Lo and behold, Nikon just announced recalls on some of these cameras. My Z6 passed the serial number test and my Z7 didn't. This is no surprise considering the new firmware failed on my Z7. I sent it to back to the factory this morning. This is the problem with first generation products but I love my Z cameras anyway in spite of their flaws.
One has nothing to do with the other. The firmware was for AF, the service advisory (not recall) was for the IBIS on some cameras not performing to the fullest range.
Maybe, maybe not. I realize that the recall was due to an IBIS problem and my Z7 had a serial number for recall. The fact that the latest face and eye detect firmware update didn't work on my Z7 may be part of a larger technical issue. Nikon has had a poor record for the last several years with recalls and this is frustrating. I mentioned the firmware failure on my paperwork which I sent with my Z7 to Nikon. My Z6 is working fine. I like Fuji much better as a company than Nikon but the image output with the Fuji X cameras are not on par with the Nikon images.
This was a reply to another viewer.
@@stanobert3475 No, probably a corrupted file. Or many you mixed up the file names and tried installing the 2.0 Z6 version in the Z7. If the wrong file was installed it would not work.
@@stanspb763 Nope. I followed the instructions to the letter. I separated my Z6 from my Z7 firmware. This was not a user error on my part. The camera is defective and I expect it to be fully operational when Nikon ships it back to me.
I did everything exactly like in the movie, my Nikon z6 only sees version 1.00 : /
I'm on the fence with the Z6. I hear good and mixed reviews on it. In your opinion, would this be a worthwhile buy, for lets day travel and portraits, or wait for the 2nd generation?
I have the d810 and am happy eith it. Although a minor gripe is that it is a bit heavy.
I got a Z7 and I LOVE it. Its worth it for the accuracy and sharpness in a studio alone. no stupid AF fine tuning
Is the fixed--DX-mode for DX lenses issue fixed?
My Local Nikon Sales guy told me the new update now allows z6 to record 10bit internally and 12bit to Ninja. I know Prores was coming so no surprise there but can it really record 10-bit 4K internally? Can someone please verify this because I cannot find any reference to this online? This is really important. Thanks.
I just purchased the Z6, my main camera is the D810. Do you really like the Z6?
Why was the Z7 brighter with the same settings and there seemed to be more motion blur on the Z7 when displaying in liveview. Thoughts?
There wasn't actually a difference in motion blur when I reviewed the footage. However, I realized why the Z7 was brighter after I filmed! It is because I brightened that screen in the menus but I didn't do it with the Z6.
tnx for this video!
Hi Leigh, Thanks for this video! I wanted to tell you that Ive spent many, many hours watching UA-cam videos from much of the photography reviewer community. Your channel is superb with regard to content and integrity! I have the Z7, live in The Valley of the Sun as well and follow your work. Thanks again for the great job that you do! best, Rick
Bloody cracking video! You put a lot of work into this, thank you. I do not have a Z6. I have been biding my time to see if Nikon would improve the auto focus, they have, so I will be getting one early 2021. A certain baldy tattooed wanker made me want to slash my wrists with his biased negative review. I no longer subscribe to his channel. I have "liked" and subscribed to yours. I look forward to more of your brill videos. Tom. Cheers, from England
is it possible to update my Nikon without the card reader? like if I just connect to my Mac with a usb c cable and move the folder to it
No, for a number of reasons update has to be done by card.
Stan SPb ok so I have no choice but to go by an XQD card reader? 😔
Also I have just heard that both the Z6 and Z7s have been recalled as of 05-16-19.
I discuss that towards the end of the video. Only some bodies need repair for VR issues - you can look up your serial number. Neither of mine need repair. :)
I guess all Canon mirrorless camera's will need to be recalled and sent in for repair as their IBIS is 100% not working.
It was a service advisory (not recall) for something that nobody had complained about but that Nikon proactively found and wanted to take care of. Namely the IBIS on some models were not giving the full performance capable.
The only person claiming the Z cameras is the fat bald guy who has been proven wrong repeatedly about the Z camera. He made you look dumb so stop watching him, you will be better informed.
Why Z7 looks over exposed with the same settings?
I previously brightened the LCD screen. The exposure in the footage is the same. :)
www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/service-advisories/technical-service-advisory-for-users-of-the-nikon-z-6-and-z-7-cameras.html...Z series cameras are going through a recall.........
Great video as always. My Z6 came in yesterday and I did the update right away. I am so excited. I have a question. I am looking to get the 24-70 F2.8. I was looking at the Nikon for$2200 and the Tamron F mount for $1200. Is it really that much better?
Go with Sigma. Also the z 24-70 is supposed to be the equivalent of the 2.8
In general, it will depend on how you will use it and a few other factors. The Nikon S lens has near-silent and very smooth autofocus, which is important when shooting video. Also, it is more compact than the F-mount lens and the FTZ adapter. There are a few other considerations when purchasing a third-party lens, which I discuss in this video... ua-cam.com/video/O1jwVXzhrIk/v-deo.html
Yes, reak S lenses are corner to corner the sharpest lenses out for their focal length, If the 2,8 is too expensive get the smaller f/4 version since it is also very good, optically superior to either the g or e version Nikon 24-70 2.8 which cost 3 times as much. I have all three and have decided not to invest in any more F lenses. With the camera, the f/4 version is $600
Thank you so much. I want a Z7 so bad now!!!
You're gorgeous!
Can I join with you ?
Do not look at the square on the screen. Put on a fast glass and take some pictures. You'll see that Nikon focuses on lashes not on the pupils of the eye as it is in Sony.
Eye Focus not in the same liga as Sony, but a good video!
Lowlight AF is now much better than the A73 - that's actually more useful to me.
@@markshirley01it is just the opposite, and you can also see it in many places online and yes I have tried both cameras, and you are a Nikon fanboy who does not look at the facts! One more thing: ua-cam.com/video/GTF_dH6RY3c/v-deo.html
@@JessDemant This review is posted way before firmware 2.0 update was released for Z system.
@@airruner still better with Sony A7III .....
@@JessDemant Sony is better at continues AF indeed overall, but the gap is miles shorter, and not as dealbreaker as it was at release time. Low light single point AF however is very much improved. Need more comparison with Sony in this regard.
In another YT channel (Jared Polin) we saw the eye tracking works up to a point. With the AF-S Nikkor 105/1.4G at 1.4 the very shallow depth of field showed the focus chose the upper eye lash, not the iris, thus leaving the iris blurred a bit (are Nikon protecting our iris pictures from faking iris scans? ;) ). Question is if you would see this too. If not, there might be a calibration issue with the 105 and Z AF. Alternatively, if maybe calibration is unnecessary with certain AF modes in a Z camera and the eye focus is based on AI, normal sensor pixel data and contrast then the algorithm uses the wrong reference pattern for focusing an eye.
Yes, I've heard about his findings and I have questions - Did the issue happen every time, did it happen across the frame, does it happen with Z lenses, does it happen with all F-mount lenses, etc. I'll do some tests. :)
@@LeighAndRaymond- great. One guy, one F lens at 1.4 - there is consistency in that, but we cannot extrapolate, deduce, from it.
they will be wrong in the end just wait its only first round
Yes... install the update before the inevitable recall of those cameras - Nikon.... sighhh... not the D750 again???
The Angry Photographer said it was a recall. He looked delighted about it for some reason. Is it just a firmware update?
Not just AP, many sites report it... www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/service-advisories/technical-service-advisory-for-users-of-the-nikon-z-6-and-z-7-cameras.html
Issue
While Nikon has taken great measures to assure the high quality expected of Nikon products, it has come to our attention that the vibration reduction (VR) feature in some Nikon Z 6 and Z 7 cameras may not function fully. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Resolution
Nikon has resolved this by making available corrective service for affected Z 6 and Z 7 cameras free of charge, including the cost of shipping an affected Z 6 and Z 7 camera to Nikon as well as its return, even if your Z 6 or Z 7 camera warranty has expired.
There is a firmware update for the Z cameras (which I discuss during the bulk of this video), as well as a service advisory (which I touched on at the end of this video). Some Z cameras need to be fixed due to a VR issue.
Thanks for sharing Snappy. By the Fro's real world testing the AF has improved but still far from perfect. Definitely still lagging noticeably behind the class leader Sony. So for Nikon still a work in progress and much to do.
Yes in eye detect at very shallow depth of field maybe but I never really shoot head shots below f3.5. More importantly the lowlight AF is really good and I'm hearing better than the A73. They'll still work on the Eye AF as a Prores update is due.
Sony Northrup commented on Fro’s Z6 & 7 eye auto focus testing and review & declared one of the features to be a deal breaker. My my how those two, T&C screwballs hate Nikon and the Z’s. It’s as if they’re doing all they can to bankrupt Nikon. A couple of real haters! Here the hypocrite and his unhinged bride of Nerdenstein spouse haven’t even tried it for themselves. I told you in my earlier post that they’d do this, and they did. Beware of those two and their overtly biased reviews. Nikon must have refused to pay them any bribe money, in my opinion.
EXCELLENT video. Thanks.
I heard the Z6 and Z7 are getting recalled! That's bad.
They aren't getting recalled. Some of the Z cameras (depending on serial number) need a VR fix.
I checked my serial number, I am good!
It effects very few cameras, Out of over 100 owners on one forum checking their serial numbers one has a listed serial number of a possible problem but he said his IBIS worked great.
You should watch angry photographer video on this issue my view he is top photo expert on utube he says z cameras are a D750 replay just the start of recalls not an issues with other bodies even you reviewed
He is not a top expert except in his own fantasies. He does not have one and has been wrong about his rants. He doesn't seem to understand why it is the best FF mirrorless on the market. He is not even a photographer and his only shots he showed turned out to be stolen from some web site.
You are joking right?
this works really bad in low light. After the update I have hard time shooting in Clubs. Under bright light and studio light is gonna work great.
Worst nikons ever they just recalled both so nothing will help
Yes, they recalled some serial numbers for a VR issue. It's all about preference. I love mine and luckily they don't have the VR issue. :)
@@philipandreicuk5356 Nonsense, hundreds of thousands of Z cameras have been sold and very few have been anything but perfect. You are letting the fat bald guy make you look like fool. He has been proven wrong about every one of his wild claims about a camera he does not even own. The people who did not listen to him and bought the Z cameras love then, and they are actual photographers which is not. He is just a bizarre malcontent who is angry because all his claims were refuted.
thank you, very helpful, as my name says, took a few minutes to find the bin file,
