The reason why she wears a Korowai is because she is the leader, same with the Men. They also have to compete against other groups for that trophy too. Also each group performs different disciples: 1- Whakaeke(Entrance) 2- Moteatea(Traditional chant) 3- Poi( Women's dance involving balls in strings) 4 - Waiata-a-Ringa(Action Song)5- Haka, which your already familiar with, 6-Whakawatea(Exit) or Waiata Tira(Choral Song) optional which one you want to choose. With the song with pictures of ppl that passed away we honor & dedicate the song to those that had a huge influence to the group/school, lastly that's a Taiaha (maori weapon) that the men use during Haka
If you watch enough of them you will be able to tell the difference between good and great much like with dancing comps.. timing, singing, the songs themselves and the performance. Also you should watch one with Poi in it and maybe watch the adults ones 🙂
It's amazing too see people paying respect and getting the Maori culture out there by doing these videos I'm not in this video but respect for getting this performance out there keep doing what yah doing
Brutha much love and gratitude for doing this reaction💯🤎🙇🏾♂️ I am an old boy of this group "Raukura" and and old boy of R.B.H.S (Rotorua Boys High School) or "Raukura" Class of 96!!🔥💪🏾 RIP, blessings and love to our kaumatua (elders) of R.B.H.S & R.G.H.S🙏🏾🤎 I have nothing but respect and appreciation for what u do and the love u give towards our people and culture butha💯🙇🏾♂️🤎 It is very hard to stay humble when I see our culture reaching the worlds eye but always easy to feel GRATITUDE💯 Thank you again💯🙇🏾♂️🙇🏾♂️🙇🏾♂️ "Ko wai te kura!!!!?" "RAUKURA!!!" #nzmaorilove
As a Maori, we take so much mana (pride) in our Whakapapa ( ancestry) and doing haka at a tangi (funeral) shows our loved ones they were loved and we were proud of them.
💙🙋♀️ Twanoooo!!! I was really happy to see you react to this video! You gotta listen to St Joesphs Maori Girls College singing some of our waiata! Their voices are so beautiful and elegant how they perform👌. Ohhhh and thanks for the shout out, her one kind of looks real, not sure though but mine is permanent 😊🌿
It's amazing that you've reacted to this. I love that our culture is being heard and seen outside of New Zealand. We can't fault any of you for not knowing about is and our culture but if there's anything you'd like to know please make contact and more than happy to provide you with information or steer you in the direction of it 😊
Awesome Yea our Hebrew Jew Israelite ancestors did the war dance before battle, and I also got the energy chills as well watching this, Chur bro much Aroha.
What you meant to say was 'the calm before the storm'. 😅 Good to see you enjoying the kapa haka reactions. You've come a long way, and still on the rise bro.
Many things determine if a kapa (group) is better than others, how their clothing looks, how it sits, if it’s clean ect. But the main thing is pronunciation of the words and how clearly the judges can make out what they are saying!
Every haka or song has movements that correspond to what they’re actually saying, that’s why every set has a different vibe. Haka’s are strong and loud because they’re a challenge to other people and songs are peaceful and calm because they’re telling a story. And everyone is so on point because they train almost everyday and weekends for these competitions
You should react to Te Pikikōtuku o Ngati Rongomai 2019 I’m pretty sure they won the biggest haka competition for adults for that year! Also the “sword” thing is called a Taiaha (Tie-ah-huh) is how it’s pronounced!! These reactions are so cool
Im Maori and had no idea what you were meaning with the 'bi-polar' comment then minute 29 happened and I just cracked up laughing. You weren't wrong. That was a fast change and you looked so confused 😂 So funny seeing things from another perspective.
You should watch all the other islands dances, and see how each are different yet similar at the same time. I think you’d appreciate the Polynesian culture even more, and enjoy it just as much
We compete at regional level (there are roughly 20ish regions in NZ with multiple iwi (tribes) within those respective regions). Some regions have 10+ competing groups and usually 2 or 3 groups make it through to nationals which fall on an off year. This is a high school group and this is a national bracket. A bracket encompasses 7 song-length items so usually groups train for 6 months or more out of the year. It’s both a sport, performing arts and it’s our beautiful culture. It depicts our warrior nature and history, our essence and who we are as people through story telling. We are all so passionate when performing is because we sing and haka about real things only. Usually a haka is an act of defiance or to express our pain/mamae of issues we as Māori face on a political, historical and cultural plane. The moves you see with the taiaha/rākau/stick are Maori weaponry moves, and we have many other weapons that are derived from carved wood or bone that our ancestors used in combat. We also have our own instruments made of these same materials. The face coverings are representative of whakapapa/geneology/lineage and many other things. We don’t have an ‘s’ in our vocabulary the word you asked about was - ‘tuki tuki’. The way that the bracket is judged is a point system and each item is worth 100 points roughly (some are non-aggregate items), and you get points removed for every mistake. There is one judge allocated to one item and they are chosen usually based on their prestige and kapa haka history. Points get removed for simple things like - someone not doing a wiri (shaking of hands), someone seen not stamping their foot (keeping beat - takahi), levels (if everyone’s levels are the same), pronunciation and annunciation of words, timing, how it sounds (if it’s flat or sharp). I love and appreciate that you watch these videos and as someone who does hakas and is a Maori, it’s entertaining to watch cultures meeting.
Love your content brother, I cherish your will to dig deep into our culture. I recommend reacting to Maori weaponry. The meaning and protocol behind the use of each weapon would really interest you. Also there a many short documentaries about the invasion of Taranaki, with the crowns objective being to destroy kingitanga (maori equivalent of royalty). I think you would be very interested in this side of the history, also the craft of carving and tattooing. Keep up the hard work my bro 👌
If you want to watch the younger kids kapa haka you should defs watch - Te whanau o te maro hauke. 💥 intermediate school division which I think is around middle school in America. Im pretty sure they won too.
The reason why the wāhine (girl) is wearing a korowai is because she is the kaea or female leader, there are both a male and a female leader who both wear korowai. Also every haka is not the same, they all have different meanings behind them.
The faces are that cheeky look to try catch the crowds attention and bring life to the performance lol… and the woman in the middle is the woman leader
@@Twano2am hahah similar. But ok so south sea islanders(Samoa Tonga etc) we’re inhabited 2000yr ago by tiwanese and Papuans(express train theory)….. but us tahitians,Hawaiians..Rapa nui from eater island are descended from sth American and French(slow boat theory)so we have a lot lighter skin/sharper noses and less Asian eyes😝haha but obvs been crossing of 🧬 between islands since. It’s like the Polynesian triangle is America, and the islands are diff states yea😉
Aroha ana ahau ki to hiahia ki to tatou tikanga Maori. What you said was a coat that is called a korowai it is worn by the leader, with a sense of honour and leadership
nah man you know how much time they rehearse this they go for months rehearsing so we dont really get tired and when your up there you your in the zone so tiredness goes out the door
Chur mbrother love your videos 🙌🏾💯❤ just wanted to say If you didn't know during Ww2 the maori battalion was giving a name by one of the high German commanders was the (Scalp hunters) for there brutal Barnet charges they did reason why they were good at Barnet charges was bc all the practices they had with the Taiaha and maoris were good in close combat. Ik it had nothing to do with the video I just wanted you to know that info. Much love mbrother from NZ
So of they don't have it mokotau ki te kiri. Usually drawn on and your judgement is not nice. Our kapa are a story. The wahine that is in your eye is our women. Men are always in front of women because we are scary and tuturu strong.

Also Auckland is in New Zealand and Sydney is in Australia 🙂. Watch the "Te Matatini kapahaka competition" it's our countries National Kapahaka Comp. I'm just sayin.

kapa haka is versitile. songs/ waiata can be about love, sad, fun, haka can be supporting, challenging, mourning, Battle it all depends.
This guy kept going off topic to speak to his led light 😂😂😂
Yea we do have them on a Basic and the hole kapa haka team has a Moāri moko Kowai the one in the middle is the leader

The only reason she is wearing the cloak because in kapa haka there’s a boy and girl leader and each leader wears something special
mans playing with the lights is so wholesome 😆😆😆
plus i love this group and yes from New Zealand/Aotearoa leshh goo
Them lights come in handy when you clapping them cheeks. Disco disco whoop whoop

Lol your reactions too funny 😂
The girl in the middle starts all the songs
Hes invited to the hangi when he comes to nz
Where is that?
You should watch te pou o mangatawhiri kapa haka
The whole performance bracket comprises of these categories -
