  • Each year, "Cinco de Mayo" or the Fifth of May is celebrated in Mexico.
Parties, dancing, and drinks commemorate a serious moment in its history.
In 1862, France wanted to collect on its debts and install its own leader in Mexico. At the Battle of Puebla outnumbered Mexican soldiers defeated a well-equipped French army stopping their advance in the country.
Mexico says the Battle of Puebla unified the country and is an example of its adamant opposition to foreign interference.
Take a look at how Mexico re-creates this historic occasion.

As a Mexican, never have I ever seen a celebration about the 5th of May in México... I believe it isn't even recognized as a festivity date.

The Void of Oblivion it’s not even a national holiday in Mexico lol but it is remembered in history books and certain schools do recognize it and celebrate it at times mostly Puebla since that’s where it took place.

I've been told that the majority of Mexicans don't hold large celebrations for Cinco de Mayo. I'm kind of relieved to see some are exceptions.

@Miranda Jimenez right it pisses me off when I live in the U.S and there's a ton of white people wearing sombreros and taking shows of tequila acting all crazy and saying the only spanish words that they know. It's stupid, they don't know the history, it's all to dress up like "Mexicans" and get drunk they don't even respect the meaning behind it.

This holiday is based on the Battle of Puebla, where historians hide the fact that this battle was fought and won by mostly free Black slaves who were living in maroon colonies in Mexico. That's why the reenactment is done in black face.

Mexico abolished slavery in 1829 just 8 years after it's independence from Spain. And many years before the U.S. Yes, they were and is a lot of black people in Mexico, but it was not just black men that fought that battle and war against the French. All are celebrated because they all were Mexican. To say black men won that battle is to ignore and disrespect all who died for their freedom. One thing is to be proud of the African heritage and another is to be stuck on race. Country before race!

Why don't you mention that the reason that some of them have their faces painted black is because it was really black men who fought the war in mexico! Don't forget that black slaves were brought to mexico as well, remember the Olmecs are black people. Tell the truth about the battle of PUEBLA involved black people so mexico can thank us!
