was wondering when a new vid was coming out! but 11 months later, i’d say the wait was worth it. always capturing the best footage! if a farm like yours made weekly videos i don’t see why this wouldn’t be the number 1 channel on YT.
Amazing video! I've been waiting a while for this, but it was definitely worth the wait! Here's to 2019! May it be a good year for both of us! Have a great rest of the evening - Everett aka Farm Boy #1
Great video!! Congratulations to Canadian Farmers. I'm a Brazillian agronomist and soon i will be there to learn more about yours way you produce there.
It's probably not actually as dry as it looks because you see here in northern Saskatchewan we will typically have a few mild frosts before the corn is chopped. Usually it only kills the top 2 or 3 feet of the crop and the rest will keep its moisture better. But if you get a total killing frost then you have to get corn off in a hurry because it will dry out fast after that. I know where this video takes place and they had a pretty hard frost on Sept 5th.
the silage is going to ferment on this heaps and is "shelfstable" over the winter and so on. but for that to happen you must force all the oxygen out of it by compacting it. with oxygen the corn will just rot away and it cannot ferment.
So you have the first vehicle is cutting the grass and putting it into rows. the second vehicle is a combine and they are using it to separate out some part of the crop for feed ( i personally don,t now farm potatoes i have yet to work at a dairy). After the combine goes through they bail the grass. Later in the video you see what are called forage harvesters which are used to collect corn and other feed crops for dairy feed production. the reason why they have different crops is because they combine them into a mixture know as a TMR (total Meal Ration) it is the predominant way to feed dairy production cows in the world.
the reason why its put into rows is because its easier for all the other machines what they need to do. There are single pass solution for a lot of things in farming not everything has a single pass solution available yet or its too expensive to adopt at the momment,l
The first harvesting machine is called a swather and they are cutting canola (also know as oil seed rape in the uk) they do this to dry it out and protect form moisture as they have a very small harvest widow that far north because if they used the combines with the headers like what we would be used to the harvest would take to long and it would be too wet to store properly so they would have to spend thousands drying the grain or else it would rot in storage. I would recommend seeing some of the MN millennial farmers videos or how farms work they have videos explaining it a bit better
If you work in a dairy you must smell like poop all the time. I have a small farm run about 25 head of beef cows my Grandpa always said it smells like money. It's funny I have grown to love the smell of a feed yard.
Great video! Greetings from the Netherlands / Holland!
Dang, this was well worth the wait

Do you typically harvest your silage at that moisture? seems much dryer than we chop it here in kansas.

Hello, is Canada a good country for work and travel (work in farming and harvesting)? thank you
Can somebody explain to me why they pile and compact silage like that? (6:50) Does it need to be compacted to help ferment? Thanks in advance.

Hola 😍😍 Hola.. nice video mapping
Can anyone please explain the harvesting part to me? Like why they use the 2 different machines and how they work? Type of crop ?
