Maddux Tiffany Run! + 3 Card Questions!

  • This is a showcase of my Greg Maddux Topps Tiffany run of card from ‘87 Topps Traded Tiffany through ‘91 Topps Tiffany.
I also pose three relevant questions regarding these cards or similar enough variants:
    1. What is the origin of the phrase “Tiffany” to describe the Topps special collector’s edition sets? The word “Tiffany” is not present on the box sets themselves.
    2. Is there a known texture “stationery” variant in the ‘87 Topps Traded (not Tiffany) set? If so, how rare is it in relation to the standard smooth card?
    3. Is my ‘91 Topps Desert Shield card authentic? I’ve waffled back and forth about it and don’t have enough experience with these types of cards to know conclusively either way.
Thanks for watching! Please help me with these questions in the comments below. I appreciate it!

Brian, what a glorious Maddux Tiffany run! 🤯🤯🤯 Your 1991 Tiffany is my favorite! I believe I know the answer to one of your 3 questions. Just as Tiffany & Co. (aka Tiffany's) is known for making luxury jewelry, the Topps collector's edition sets came to be known as Tiffany cards because they were viewed as luxurious cards compared to their regular Topps counterparts. The word Tiffany being used in a more general way to indicate something elegant, limited, and of high quality that is therefore highly desirable. Take care, my collecting brother! 😊👊

Thank you, Adam! I figured you would appreciate these shiny, glorious Tiffany cards! I was pretty sure that Tiffany & Co. had something to do with the naming, but I had never read that anywhere or had it officially confirmed before your comment, so thank you for officially answering that question for me!

Sweet cards! I have quite a few Tiffany cards and am working on getting all the HOF rookie cards from the Tiffany sets. The name “Tiffany” was never used by Topps. It was a name that was essentially created and adopted by the hobby as a way to differentiate between the glossy Collectors Edition cards and the Topps base cards.
There’s a ton of fake Desert Shield cards out there, and many are graded. One of the tells as far as I know is the Palm Tree, it is much more detailed on the real as compared to the fakes.

Thanks for watching, and thanks for the info about the Tiffany and Desert Shield cards. Something tells me that mine isn’t authentic, but I’m in a quest for knowledge about how to tell. Another commenter mentioned that the backs of the desert shield cards react a little more to a blacklight than the regular Topps issues, so I guess I’ll have to add “blacklight” to my list of needed hobby supplies!

Just found your channel! I'm a big Tiffany collector and even have brought some other YTers over to the glorious world of Tiffanys, lol. It's weird that Topps Tiffany differed with the asterisks over different years instead of just sticking with one way to tell the difference over the years. Tiffanys also have that slight glittery surface to them. I'm working on Rickey Henderson's Topps and Bowman Tiffany run but all cards not just base (League/Team Leaders, AS cards). Love the Maddux cards, great job, threw you a sub!

Awesome! Rickey is such a great guy to go for the Tiffany runs as he is in ALL the Tiffany sets! Gwynn would be great as well! I’ve debated picking up the Bowman Tiffany cards for Maddux as well, although I think it’s just the ‘89 and the ‘90. Yes, I have no clue why the asterisk trick only works for certain years. I’d be very curious to ask someone at Topps the reason behind that. Thanks for watching and subbing!

Hah, that’s ok! I need someone like a Mangini who might know these things. 😂 Thanks for watching!

Ah, no worries! These are pretty specific questions about relatively obscure cards.
As a kid, I didn’t even really know about Tiffany’s or Desert Shields. I do like that they take what was otherwise a card printed to oblivion, and add something to make it distinct and more limited. Heck, that’s sort of what grading does - there might be an insert numbered /100, but only 3 PSA 9s of that insert. I’ll be sure to feature more recent shiny cards from after ‘94 in future videos. Something tells me though that you will probably have everything that I would show! 😂😅
    Thanks for watching and commenting!

I do not have an answer for your 3 questions but I am curious to know the answers as well! Haha Great looking Maddux Tiffany run! I have seen people do a black light test on the back of the Desert Shield cards. I just don’t remember if it is supposed to fluoresce or not. Haha I think it is supposed to though

Great video. I’ve never heard of that as a variant but I wonder if it might develop over time based on storage methods. I work with wood as a side business and wood items like furniture will have slight seasonal changes depending on humidity and temperature changes. I wonder if a cardboard card with a plain back yet shiny surface might be subject to the same thing. Over time a I could see a slight wrinkle effect occurring.
This is all just conjecture on my part but that wrinkling looks similar to veneered wood to me.

It’s definitely possible that this is artificially developed with specific storage and humidity conditions over time. I’m not entirely convinced though. This is an issue with the regular traded, not the Tiffany version, so there’s not any gloss to factor in, and the surface up close REALLY looks like the nice textured type of stationery that you would use for a resume or a handwritten letter. I don’t know what PSA would do with it… probably either not notice, give it an 8 and move on, or notice, and give it a 3 because of the “surface defect”. Thanks for your thoughtful response!

To the best of my knowledge, Tiffany has never been an official name. It was more of an organic name throughout the collecting community.
On question 2, are they roller lines from printing? That would be my guess.
Question 3, use a black light on the back and it should have a glow, but honestly I've been burnt on the desert shield and am a little jaded about that card

      Thanks for your response!
Yes, I’m pretty sure “Tiffany” has always been an unofficial slang term never actually endorsed by Topps. I guess I’m wondering how the term first came to be used to describe these lovely shiny variants, though I think Adam from Vintage Sanctuary is right on the money with his response.
As for the roller lines possibility… man, that would be a LOT of roller lines! I wouldn’t exactly count it out… but it doesn’t have that look to me. The pattern looks far too regular to be accidentally formed from humidity or accidental roller markings. It truly looks and feels like nice thick, resume-grade stationery cardstock, which just has me so confused.

As for the Desert Shield, I have never heard of a blacklight test used for determining their authenticity! That’s a cool idea - I will look into it! As far as I knew, those cards were basically identical to the regular Topps issue, with the exception of the gold stamp that was frequently faked. If that is indeed the case, would a base Topps also light up under a blacklight? Or how would it be different?
I have 100% used a blacklight to determine fake ‘87 Donruss Barry Bonds / Johnny Ray Opening Day error cards - newer fake reproductions will glow whereas the legit copies will not. But even that method is not foolproof - newer counterfeits can now defeat the blacklight test, so the scammers are getting better.
Thanks for the tip though! I will check it out!

@HighPopProfessor the desert shield should have a brighter, almost pink, glow where the red is under the black light. The base should look rather plain under the black light. I sent mine over to CGC prior to knowing about the black light test and when I compared the fake Maddux to a real Nolan Ryan, I could definitely tell the difference
