- Not much in the way of clues on the outside of the truck to indicate the high performance 426 c.i. wedge engine under that hood! Amazing performance truck..and the original owner! It certainly is a vehicle that begs to be kept in the family forever! Air conditioning was added and makes this the perfect truck!

Very nice RARE truck, thanks for posting. One of the first muscle Pickup's and ahead of it's time.
Amazing truck and what is even more amazing is that at that time I used to religiously all the car magazines and I don't recall this model. I am glad to see that the owner has taken such good care of this very unique option.
Thiese were a special order truck here is a link to them if want to check it out and learn more about it lot's of info and the trucks that are known to exist www.cssregistry.com/css/index.html
great video overview on my truck! thanks for posting :)
Hey, Ben! Thanks for bringing it to the show! I appreciate the opportunity to video such great vehicles! Thanks for the nice comment! :) Jack
I never was able to keep up with all the performance models of the time...and I'm glad I found this one. I always learn something from these shows! Thanks! :) Jack
This is the first muscle truck. The little red got way more recognition, this is the truck most mopar enthusiast do not even know about. very rare indeed. awesome package.
That's a very good point...I'm glad I had the opportunity to video it. I think the chances of seeing it were enhanced because it was indeed a Mopar meet. Thanks! :) Jack
Hey, Chester! That's why I like going to these Mopar events...rare vehicles often show up that you would never see at a local show. I agree about the promotion...GM seemed to have the advantage there..they knew how to promote their vehicles back in the day! Thanks! :) Jack
The instrument gauges/panel was not changed out, that was in the "package" of the 'Custom Sports Special"
Hey, Dennis! Thanks for clearing that up...and it really validates this car as authentic! :) Jack
I can't believe it.. nice truck
Hey, Scott! It really is nice! Glad you like it! Thanks! :) Jack
Jack this video, like all your others, is fantastic. One thing I would like to mention though, When Dodge trucks of this era were equipped with an automatic transmissions the transmission was called LoadFlite.
Hey, Patrick! Thanks for the compliment! Now that you mention it, I remember the term LoadFlite! :) Jack
Magnifique! Very subtle, the only thing showing performance being the hood louvres. I surmise that this staid-looking family hauler gave more than a few hot-rodders their comeuppance!
Those are not open slots just for appearance.I have a 67 dodge truck for 30 years now.Mine came with a 225 slant6 in it factory. But i bought the truck used in 1981 some of the best long lasting trucks ever made if you ask me !!!
Glad you have a Dodge truck...Dodge trucks of this vintage are very cool...and definitely worthy of restoring! That slant 6 sure was a torquey engine...had one in my Dart! Thanks! :) Jack
according to what I've read, the 426W in the CSS/HP D100's was pulled from the car production line and not a specific truck engine (hence the High Performance designation and NOT Heavy Duty). Dodge management restricted production to no more than 50 units total. A total of only 31 are thought to have been made.
Thanks very much for that information on the 426W! It certainly became a rare option! Thanks! :) Jack
thats a rare beauty!
I believe the option package on the 426 max wedge trucks was intended specifically for racing hence the no warranty support emblem.
Good point...if you went racing, you couldn't expect Mopar to fix it the day after! Thanks! :) Jack
Hey, Jason! I would bet that Chrysler learned the hard way that powerful vehicles can be abused in a heartbeat..that's a big temptation to see how fast it goes, or how well it handles. The warranty in this case places responsibility in the hands of the owner. Thanks! :) Jack
Thanks for the reference....I'm sure viewers will enjoy! :) Jack
Thanks for the information...cool that you have such a great, long lasting truck! Thanks! :) Jack
Here is a link if you want to know more about these rare trucks www.cssregistry.com/css/index.html
Thanks for the information and the registry website! I'm sure this will be of interest to a lot of viewers! :) Jack
Sweet rides nice !!!!
Hey, Adolfo! Sure is sweet...glad you enjoyed! Thanks! :) Jack
It's my pleasure to post...Dodge made some neat pickups! Thanks! :) Jack
Hey, Roger! Yes indeed...very subtle! And I agree, it probably surprised many hot-rodders in its day. Thanks! :) Jack
Can't imagine more than a handful were built with the 426 wedge. I believe that a police department in NY state ordered a couple. Friend of mine has an older one with a 413 wedge, it runs 8 sec flat in the eighth mile, he claims it gets over 20 mpg highway.
Perhaps the stats are for just the truck model...that's a potent engine indeed!
Thanks! :) Jack
Must be a good, sturdy truck.
Hey, Alan! Dodge was known for producing sturdy trucks. Thanks! :) Jack
The Stongs could have used one of those. My sisters would have rivaled me for riding in the truck with Dad. Fun, Incorporated!
Hey, Alan! Dodge made one tough truck! Plenty of fun! Thanks! :) Jack
Yes those slant6 engines are quiet powerfull engines. With a 3 or 4 speed manual transmission they can handle a 2 ton truck with such ease !! My truck weights 2 tons as do most all dodge trucks in the 1960s.Thanks yeah they sure are worth rebuilding for one thing they are getting rare to find nowdays too.I had a 63 dodge dart man it had a slant6 and it would scat too !!
You know, I'm just starting to realize now that I re-tuned the carb (just a 1bbl) slant-6, 3-on-the-tree, in a '61 Dodge Seneca 2-door sedan. with a lightweight body, it really scoots.
@@denniscarroll7696 Thats great love them slant6s
Your welcome keep it up !
I appreciate that! :) Jack
when I worked for Chrysler, a man came in and ordered a pickup truck with a weird assortment of accessories, and they would not refund the deposit, or let him back out of the deal
+Is1amization by Immigration I can't say that I blame the dealer on that one....if it is such a weird combination of accessories, who but that individual would want it. And why should the dealer take a loss after going through the trouble of ordering it? Thanks! :) Jack
Dude if your gonna hold the camera 12" from the truck, this may as well be a radio show because we can only see the thing 12" at a time. Would love to have taken it in. Maybe its just me
I suggest you check more recent videos...this was done back in 2012, I've gotten better at it since then. New video each day, 6500 videos. Thanks! :) Jack
You mention the air conditioner "was added, " which is true. But you would be more correct to state it is a Dealer option addition, not aftermarket.
Awesome truck. I'd like to hear the performance figures-- it had to be the fastest pickup of the time.
Hey, Bruce! Thanks for the correction! I don't have those performance figures, however. :) Jack
@@coolrides The 001 is the stock 100 badge turned upside down
I always thought that those old Chrysler trucks had a very unconventional look about them and I never liked it. I may be wrong but I think that they were not built particularly well but I may be wrong. A very nice video though!
Hey, guys! Dodge trucks did have a different look...they did have some good designs in the mid 50's. Dodge had a reputation for building a tough truck...they made a lot of them for used during WWII...and a local business used only Dodge and International trucks. They seemed to hold up well. Thanks! :) Jack
You sure knew, looking at the front of these pickups back then, that you were looking at a Chrysler product.
Yes, I'd say that Dodge was very distinctive at this point....you knew you were looking at a Dodge! Thanks! :) Jack
And that front end looks so very much like that on its distant cousin the '64 Chrysler Newport. Simplified and squared off, but awfully similar.
That's a great point! Reminds me of how the Studebaker truck borrowed the Lark's front! Thanks! :) Jack
I like that 001. I can imagine driving this in winter where i grew up - fishtailing special. My 73 Mustang was almost undriveable in the snow and it only had a 351!
And perhaps Dodge could have added another $500 to the sticker price and then honored the warranty.
Was fun watching this again.
I'm guessing the full payment situation was probably more something the dealer insisted on versus the factory. The factory was going to get paid by the dealer based on the terms of their franchise agreement. The dealer was probably worried that if they only took a deposit and the purchaser later backed out that this would probably be a pretty hard truck to sell on the lot to the average truck buyer, given its high cost, no warranty and Max Wedge engine. Same kind of stuff happens today for example, many dealers will insist on full payment if you order a decked out gasoline powered three quarter ton or larger truck.
Hey, Kenneth! I sure appreciate your perspective on the advanced payment. It sure makes sense...the manufacturer will always get paid, but the dealer stands to have a hard to sell vehicle on the lot if the prospect backs out. Thanks! :) Jack
@@coolrides Exactly, back in that era pickup trucks were still pretty much a utilitarian vehicle primarily for commercial usage. They did sell more decked out versions with more chrome, sound insulation, fabric seats and full wheel covers, but the main buyers of those were probably farmers where the truck could be seen as a both a truck and a car. As for homeowners, you had a limited number that would be buying trucks and most of them had a purpose like a slide out camper. Even most tradesmen that bought trucks, back then probably opted for the 6 cylinder 3 on the tree unless they were going to haul heavy loads or tow something. Given all of that, the market for a hot rod pickup with a 426 (which is not exactly a daily driver engine) would be quite limited and as a dealer that could stay on your lot for a long long time, especially in a rural area. Funny how people look at it in today's context and wonder why there weren't more of them.
the idea of slotted hoods, is to prevent air damming for a high Performance Engine
I thought those came with a manual 3 on the floor but I also thought they also came with the REAL max wedge 426 not the street 426 wedge but been badass
Hey, Andy! This truck was on exhibit at Don Garlits Museum of Speed...and I figure that the information that the owner had printed on the posterboard would be correct. There were too many Mopar enthusiasts present for it to have any errors. This was a special order truck, with torqueflite and the non-warraned engine. I doubt many were sold, especially since you had to pay for the truck before it was shipped from the factory. Thanks! :) Jack
Jack R gotcha
I was demonstrating the car one time and the kid was ragging it out.
I made him pull over, because I told him I said, there's no way you're going to buy this car the way you're tearing it up...
+Is1amization by Immigration I think you were very knowledgeable in doing that...you had probably seen that all before, and it was wise to step in. Thanks! :) Jack
better than a hemi cuda...
More practical, for sure! Thanks! :) Jack
Folks there is website dedicated for these trucks along with the CSS package. I have the link on my you tube page
😍😍😭🤗🤗
Hey, Carlos! I'm glad you like the Dodge truck....it's very cool! Thanks! :) Jack
