I had the privilege to have a few lessons with him and I will never forget how I asked him what notes I should play in a particular song when playing a walking bass line. His response was that he can’t answer that and that I have to find out myself, find my own voice and way. I should focus on a great sound and being able to play the whole fingerboard. The rest will come. Have open ears and an open mind he said!
I hope you got your money back.
🙃
I Came here because Russell Hall mentioned first learning with Larry. I have been trying to get away from that square stance and bringing the neck closer to my head. It's challenging when you're self-taught. I'm slowly bringing that neck around and becoming less reliant on seeing the neck. Larry is fabulous all over the neck too.
Oh Larry... Such a constant source of inspiration!
:)
@@Krisselbee Hallo Kristina :)
@@calvinlennig Hey Calvin hast du auch zufällig den Song gelernt
Haha das wird ja ein richtiger Chat hier. Leider nein. Wieso?
Larry....one of the most original and natural sounding bassist . My reverence....👍
Beautiful!
Thank you for watching :-)
Geoff, thank you for continually putting out such great material!
My pleasure! I'm really glad you enjoy it. Thanks for watching :-)
beautiful performance, wow! Also captured so well, great to get the close ups on both hands like that!
Thank you Shane, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Saw him three years ago at the hollywood bowl, inspiring then and inspiring now.
Yeah man! Thanks for this..
Woaw, incredible
Bravo!
I saw him play with his wife, Rebecca Martin. Really interesting to hear jazz musicians stretch out into other genres. That's what jazz is all about, learning how to stretch out and make that song your own.
Agreed. I'm a big fan of Rebecca Martin and they really complement each other musically.
Masterfull man..
Master bassist
amazing flow and tone. is this a 1/2 size bass?
No, it's a 3/4 bass by Eastman strings.
hello i really love the sound and the ideas developed . could you tel me which strings are used because they seems "light" . thank you for your answer ans sorry for the english of a french guy ;)
Sure, they are Thomastik Spirocore Weich E,A,D and a Pirastro Oliv G.
Thanks for watching.
@@DiscoverDoubleBass thank you for your answer ...it seems a good mix for a good sound and a easibility of play . always difficult to find a good compromise with string.
Is he playing a specific form or is it more or less random within a key. ?
Larry's composition Pettiford is based on the changes to Laverne Walk by Oscar Pettiford. Larry did this without preparing and in one take. It was so inspiring!
he's playing with experience and feel.
Discover Double Bass I mean he has recorded this solo on his record so I’m sure he shed it to some extent
yes, fair point.
Skillz!
All one can do is shudder in the presence of genius.
Larry is such a great player! He does have somewhat of an unusual stance though, having the bass almost perpendicular to his body. I'd always been taught that that was not appropriate (due to the curve it usually causes in your left wrist), but it just goes to show that whatever works for you, do it.
Agreed, I've noticed that as well. In the next episode we discuss left and right hand technique and he shares a lot about his approach.
I know. And his left hand is crazy too! Sounds great though! As always...
I just watched the Discover Double Bass videos on left hand position and Larry does it all "wrong"! But obviously it doesn't affect his ability to play!
Our teachers share their own approach to learning the double bass. There are numerous ways to play this incredible and diverse instrument. There’s no single correct way to learn any art form and we would never claim that to be the case. Naturally we don’t have time in our lessons to offer caveats after each point. This is the same approach for any kind of instrumental tuition and is why our bluegrass lessons use a different approach to our classical soloists.
